This tenon saw was used in the making of components for the ship model Sovereign of the Seas. Tenon saws are often used for making dovetail joints. It is part of a collection of objects used by Jim Williams, maker of fine ship models from about 1930-1955. Most of the components for the models, as well as many of the tools, were handmade by Jim Williams. Jim’s family has donated the ship model “Sovereign of the Seas” and many tools, accessories and documents used in the making of this and other ship models have been donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. Ship model of HMS Sovereign of the Seas, scale model of 17th Century English war ship, was handmade and carved from plans, enclosed in airtight glass case. All components of that model, including even the smallest pulleys, were hand crafted using tools designed and made by Jim. Outstanding details include functional rigging and moving cannons. This tenon saw is connected with the hobby and skill of ship model making that has been crafted as a leisure activity for many generations. The hobby is often chosen by serving and retired mariners who appreciate the connection with maritime history. This tenon saw was used by local Warrnambool man, Jim Williams, who was employed at Cramond and Dickson clothing store, and then at Fletcher Jones menswear for 27 years. It was used in making components for the model of the historic ship, the Sovereign of the Seas. The Sovereign of the Seas was a historic 17th century English war ship with important maritime heritage. Tenon Saw. Hand saw with small-toothed metal blade set into a slotted brass back, attached to a round brass fitting in the light coloured, turned wooden handle. Top on handle is marked with seven concentric rings scored into the wood. On top of blade is maker’s name “AVIA” within oval ring. This item is from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. These pins were awarded at Koko between 1967 -1969. Two pins were awarded to guests at Koki each week for "'outstanding displays of eccentric or unusual behaviour" during their stay. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. He had remained actively involved in Falls Creek and was generous with his time and knowledge, always an amazing supporter of The Falls Creek Museum and Falls Creek Village.This item is significant because it represents entertainment and activities at Koki Lodge in the late 1960s.Koki enamelled metal pins depicting the sun wearing glasses. The pin is accompanied by a typed sign.On Sign ITEM No.68 Koki pins 1967 to 1969 The Koki pin was never sold, and was only presented as the result of some very biased decision making. Unique award presentation ceremonies were conducted and two pins per week were awarded to guests for 'outstanding displays of eccentric or unusual behaviour during their stay at Koki. Pins could be earned on the slopes, at the bar, or in the bedroom. Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information reporting on activities at Falls Creek in the late 1950s.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. In this issue:- Front Cover features a photo Hymans Chair Lift at Falls Creek. Dick McGain of St. Trinians relaxes on his chair. Visible is the Ski Village, St. Trinians, Kiewa Valley. Diane, Galleon and Bowna Lodges, Grand Coeur Chalet and Dobson’s Store. The photo was taken by Eric Burt. Page 240 mentions new facilities at different ski fields.
