The Acropol was a reception business located on the top of floor of Ithaca House (level 2). The IPS club rooms were located on the first floor. Dinner dances were held at the Acropol. Bendigo Advertiser Thursday, May 11, 1967, article of an old mine shaft burning on the corner of Pitt and Old Violet Street. It was filled to a depth of about 20 feet with sawdust and rubbish and caught alight on Anzac night when a bonfire got out of control and was still burning on May 10. Some attempts have been made to put it out but had failed. There was concern for children playing in the area. Newspaper article titled 'Volcano' gives the Mines Department Problem. Bendigo Advertiser dated Friday, May 12, 1967. Mine was still burning and the ground had subsided four feet more. It would be a matter of waiting until the smoke diminished and how far the ground was going to subside. Until then it would be useless to do anything. Sawdust had been dumped in the shaft, on top of the concrete slab. The design for the Memorial plaque was chosen from 800 entries in 1918. Mr E.C.Preston of Liverpool was the winner. The prize was 200 pounds. The plaque was to be, As a solace for bereavement and as a memento. The first plaques arrived in Australia during 1922. They were to become commonly known as the Death penny or the Dead mans penny. Francis Charles Wicks, No 2246 enlisted in 14th Reinforcements 28th Batt AIF on 24.7.15 age 33 years 10 months. Embarked for Eygpt 1.10.15, embarked for France 16.3.16, was reported Missing in Action on 29.7.1916 and was then reported Killed in Action the same day in France, confirmed by Court of Inquiry 4.1.17. These labels come from the pharmacy business of R.F.Kennedy who sold Lectar Company products and used a lighthouse image as his logo. Richard Kennedy (1826-1903), a wholesale, retail and manufacturing chemist in Timor Street, came to Warrnambool in 1880 and had what was described in the ‘Cyclopedia of Victoria’ as ‘the largest and best-appointed pharmacy in Victoria’. Kennedy was the Vice-President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria, on the Pharmacy Board and was prominent in community affairs n Warrnambool. He also made local perfumes with many varieties named after people or events of the time – Nellie Melba, Federation etc. His pharmacy building in Timor Street and his house in Canterbury Road (“Ivanhoe”) still stand today.These labels are of some interest as they are associated with the Warrnambool business of the chemist, R.F.Kennedy.
