This is a photograph of The Avenue leading to the Sunbury Asylum. it is lined with pine trees and post and rail fences. At some stage oak trees were also planted along the avenue. In the late 1990s the trees along the west side of The Avenue were removed as a result of housing development. The photograph overlooks former railway land along Vineyard Road which is now a commercial and light industrial estate. In the late 1970s an interstate tourist bus crashed on its side on Holden Bridge which spans the Deep Creek at Bulla. The photograph was taken before the wooden Holden Bridge which spans an arm of the Deep Creek at Bulla was replaced by a more sunstantial concrete structure. The Kaolin Quarry at Bulla supplied Kaolin to the Northcote and Brunswick Pottery Works until it ceased operation at that site in the 1950s. The mounted photograph is one of a series used for display purposes. The water tower at Sunbury Station was built in 1861 by J. Bett. it is of state significance and is an indicator of the importance of the railway to Sunbury's expansion in the Nineteenth Century. Steam trains needed sufficient steam power to climb the steep gradients over the Great Dividing Range and the water tower at Sunbury was used to replenish the trains' water supply for the remainder of the journey.A black and white photograph of the water tower at Sunbury Railway Station.
