Warrnambool Football Club was formed in June 1861 making it one of the earliest clubs formed in Australia and many of the earliest players and associates were members also of the Warrnambool Cricket club which was established around 1854. Games of various sized teams were played in the early years and it was in 1889 that the Warrnambool and District Football Association was formed. The year marked with the celebration of this dinner, was important in the club’s history as it marked their entry into the wider Hampden football league, where it still plays to the present day. As the venue for this dinner, the Commercial Hotel on the corner of Liebig and Timor Sts, was commonly used in the early days as a club meeting place. The history of the club was recorded in “The Birth of the Blues” by Ron Cole, Harry Keilar, Ron McCorkell and Ian Wright, in 2007.The Warrnambool Football club is one of the longest surviving sporting clubs in the Warrnambool district and as such, would have involved or touched the lives of many of its residents. This pencil was used as an advertising medium for the Warrnambool firm of Archie Graham and Sons. It was given to customers of the firm. Archie Graham (1906-1992) commenced a building business in Warrnambool in the 1930s and was well-known for his many building projects in the city and his innovation in the industry. Archie Graham was a prominent member of the Uniting Church and a tireless worker in community affairs in Warrnambool for sixty years. He planned and organized the street decorations for the Warrnambool Centenary in 1947, was chairman of the committee that developed Albert Park and the Reid Oval and was active in Rotary Club and Cricket Club affairs. He was also a member of the Warrnambool Technical School Council. Today the building in Timor Street for senior citizens and other community use is named after Archie Graham. This pencil is of interest as a memento of the type of complimentary article given to customers of businesses in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century. It is also a memento of Archie Graham, an important businessman and community worker in Warrnambool in the 20th century. This is a large six-sided wooden pencil sharpened at one end. The pencil is painted green with a white band near the top and a black-colored end rounded at the top. The paint on the pencil is slightly chipped. The inside of the pencil contains graphite for writing or drawing. This is a photo of the "Queen Competition", probably the best remembered entertainment of the 1930's. Four local lasses were chosen to represent the following: Bellfield Hotel, Grampians House, The Cricket Club and the Grampians Mountains. When the long awaited evening came each Queen and her attendants paraded through the hall, the results were announced and the winner (who this year was Valerie Evans) took her place on a throne erected in the middle of the stage. The other Queens made their way to thrones on either side of her. The audience were treated to a right royal display as the "Bishop" placed a crown on the winner's head. Much merriment followed including a play, with students dressed as Minnie and Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters. For the names of the people in the photo refer to "Bridging the Gap" by Ida Stanton, p.88. The photo shows a group of people arranged on and below a dais. There is a woman dressed as royalty sitting on a throne in the centre, flanked by a man dressed as a bishop on the left and a man dressed as a courtier on the right. There are two young girls in long white dresses wearing flowered bands in their hair standing in front of the men. There are more girls in white dresses and flower bands along both sided of the dais and two youths wearing ruffle fronted shirts and holding batons/walking sticks(?) at the front of each row of girls. Ernest Lance Young was born 24 March 1915 in Surrey Hills, the son of Ernest Augustus Young and Ruby Nichell Whitty. He married Beryl Mair in 1939 and died on 5 October 1999 at Mont Albert. Beryl Mair (1916-1976) was the daughter of David Miller (Dave) Mair and Lily Vipond Deakin. Dave Mair (1879-1938) was founder of the Kangaroo Cricket Club based at the MCG. The logo or emblem of the club was a kangaroo facing forward. From this one can assume that Mr Holland was a member of the club. The card was most probably sent prior in 1939 or soon after as following Dave Mair's death, as a mark of respect, the emblem was changed to a kangaroo facing to the left but with its head turned back. (Information from the donor).This is part of a large donation of material relating to the Deakin, Mair and Young families, all of whom had connections with Surrey Hills / Mont Albert. The donor is the daughter of Ernest Lance and Beryl Young.A light green card on thin paper with a total size slightly smaller than A4, folded into four. The lower edge of the front is folded back to reveal an embossed figure of a kangaroo facing forward in burnished gold. This medal was presented to J.G.Ralston by the Orbost Cricket Club in 1929 for Fielding. John Gavin Ralston was born 26 July 1914 at Eden, N.S.W. and came to Orbost in the early 1920's, with his parents and siblings. They lived at the corner of Tennyson and Salisbury Streets. Jack was educated at Orbost Higher Elementary School before being apprenticed to William Ross at the Snowy River Mail as a lino-type operator. He married Jean Cameron. After WW11 when he served overseas in the islands) He resumed his trade at the Snowy River Mail until 1949 when began J.G.& J.M. Ralston, Seed & Produce Merchants. Jack Ralston was very involved in the Orbost sporting community, the Presbyterian Church and the Orbost Municipal Band. He also served in the Orbost sub-branch of the R.S.L. He died on April 15 1967.
