(From Glen Stuart). Photos taken from Centenary Bridge c1947. HMS Glory (inner East). HMS Implacable (outer East). HMS Indefatigable (outer West). Unknown freighter at Inner West. Ships still in wartime grey and used to transport personnel and equipment back to Australia after the war, before returning to England. PMHPS assume that these five photos (3354.01 - .05) were taken on the same day. See Glen Stuart's comment above although this photo has been taken on the pier looking back through the gatehouse towards Centenary Bridge. HMS Glory, Implacable and Indefatigable with attendant destroyers Tuscan and Armada arrived in Port Melbourne on 23 January 1946 and returned to England in 1947. [This series of photos 3354.01 - .05 as well as 3361 and 3362 came to PMHPS from the Moe Historical Society via the St Kilda Historical Society. Notations in pencil on the back along the left had edge indicate they came from "C W Ward photo, 355 High St, Prahran, Melbourne". Each photo bears the date 9-12-1947 in the top left corner. It is not known what this date refers to. Possibly it is when the photo was printed. Another notation on each photo says "Port Melbourne, taken in 1920". Booklet - 20 pages, printed on off white paper, centre stapled within a grey cover slightly larger than the printed document, titled "The Case for Electric Road Passenger Transport". The title is printed on both document covers. The title is contained within a embossed area on the grey cover. The document looks at the case for electric transport in road use, both trolley buses and trams, current developments, including PCC cars, traffic problems, Europe, financial, passengers, reserved track, health and cleanliness. Not date, early 1950's? - has a reference to a 1951 public transport conference on page 5. This photograph is undated but a black and white copy in the 'Linton School - Photos' file is dated "c.1905". Mr A. J. Horan was head teacher at this time and is probably the male teacher wearing a suit, RHS in second row from back. The inscription on the back of the photograph notes that at the time the photograph was taken, "attendance [was] about 250 pupils", although there are fewer pupils than this in the photograph.Black and white photograph, mounted on grey card, which shows a large group of children posed for a photograph outside the Linton State School building. Five teachers are in the second back row on the RHS. A few boys are perched on window ledges. Some names of pupils are inscribed on the back of the photograph, but it is not clear where they are in the photograph. Names are: Roy Wishart, Margaret Wishart, Eugene Sandow, Gladys Downing, Charlie Todd, Alex McBeath.On back, in black ink: "Linton state school / attendance about 250 pupils / Roy Wishart / Margaret Wishart / Eugene Sandow / Gladys Downing / Charlie Todd / Alex McBeath". A. Truscott took over this drapery and grocery store from Mr Pengally upon his retirement in November 1884Copy of a black and white photo of A. Truscott & Co., Family Grocer, Long Gully. Weather board building with a veranda. Two gum trees in front of the shop. A grey horse is harnessed to a dray and there are two men and two women behind it. A pink sticker is stuck on the bottom with - Cnr havilah Rd , Arms St. Long Gully. Now Leadlight Shop - written on it. Written on the back is: Verandah blown off by whirly wind Landed on top of shop roof. Now replaced 1986. George Richard Oldfield was a butcher. Thomas Crouch Watts was born on March 7th. 1865, to Joseph and Susan Watts. Before the real estate business commenced, Thomas and his brother were in partnership as booksellers and stationers in a shop at View Point. Thomas lived in a fine house in Rowan Street, which was called 'Ottawa' Thomas started his real estate business in the early 1900s in a shop in View Street. His daughter Edna was the book keeper and typist, Stewart Watson was the salesman and Stanley Phipps (Edith Lunn's father) was the property manager and valuer. When Thomas Watts died in 1914, his daughter took over the running of the business. She married Stewart Watson in 1918. Eventually the name of the business was changed to Bishop and Earl. From a letter from Edith Lunn re T.C. Watts & Son. 'The firm of T.C. Watts & Son later became Bishop and Earl. When the firm of Bishop and Earl ceased to operate after the death of Edith Lunn's father, S.P. Bishop, Miss. June Parry, Secretary of the BHS was a member of staff. June rescued all the photos of properties listed for sale from the office and placed them into the custody of the BHS.' Black and white photograph mounted on rectangular grey board. Wodonga & District Historical Society IncFunctional object - National cash register used in the J.Mann & Sons General Store in Wodonga
The National cash register was used in the J. Mann & Sons General Store in High St., Wodonga, Victoria, and is part of the 'Mann' collection in the Wodonga Historical Society. J. Mann and Sons was first established as a farm produce store in 1921. The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. In the 1960s the Mann Family opened a new supermarket in Wodonga, in addition to the hardware business, providing steel, plumbing and industrial supplies, and they employed over 100 people at one stage. With changes in the retail industry, the Mann Family sold the main hardware business to Bunnings and the steel and rural produce business to the Kelly brothers in 2006. The National cash register has local significance due to its use in the J. Mann & Sons General Store in High St, Wodonga and the association with the Mann family. Surrey College was opened in early 1892 by Rev. Dr Frederick Darling who had been the first minister of the Presbyterian Church in Canterbury Road. He resigned this position to open the school which operated until 1908 with additional premises at 12 Vincent Street. The school had 40 boarders as well as day boys. Courses included algebra, euclid, history, typewriting, shorthand and drill. In the 1930s, Nethercourt Private Hospital took over the site. Later it became St Jude's Hospital. land in front of the building was subdivided off in the 1970s. The building is still extant as a private dwelling with York Street, Surrey Hills as the address. This is one of 3 photos donated by Susan Hobbs, whose grandfather Rev. George Edward Downton is thought to have been a student at the college. George E. Downton was born in Avoca in 1885. He was later a missionary in New Guinea and Secretary to the Australian Board of Missions in Adelaide. He died in 1926 or 1927. Sepia photo of 26 men and boys and one female against a background of a two-storey brick building. This is the rear of the Surrey College. There are 4 additional figures in the background and an additional house can be seen beyond the property boundary. Many of the boys wear or hold caps or boaters. The 2 men in the back row on the right are wearing academic gowns and mortar boards. The gentleman with the beard on the end is Rev. Frederick Darling, the Principal of the college. Note that the photo is detached from the mount, so the photo is numbered SHP2025.15.1 and the mount as SHP2025.15.2.Front: "Surrey College - Surrey Hills / Principal: Rev. Fredk. A. DARLING, Melb.
