Letter - Correspondence, Foreign Service of the United States of America Correspondence, 1947, 1947-1955
The letters are regarding the Education of American Ex-servicemen at the Ballarat School of Mines and Industries as part of the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 - Public Law 346, the "G.I. Bill of Rights". The G.I. Bill was created to help rehabilitate American servicemen and re-integrate them into civilian society, focusing on and encouraging the education and training of ex-servicemen. The Act offered the payment of tuition, books, supplies and subsistence. Five letters of correspondence between the Foreign Service of the United States of America Consul General Richard F. Boyce, and the Ballarat School of Mines and Industries heads of staff between 1947 and 1955. Attached are other documents regarding the 'G.I. Bill of Rights' itself, veterans information records, amendments made regarding the payment of book, supplies and equipment charges, and receipts and records specific to student Allan C. Pitzen. A valuable insight into the genesis of Melbourne Legacy, as well as the life and work of the founder of Melbourne Legacy, Lieut Gen Sir Stanley George Savige KBE, CB, DSO, MC, ED (1890 - 1954). The notation H5 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy (late 1960s/early 1970s by Frank Doolan and Brian Armstrong- see item at 00456). A lot of other documents relating to the History file of the original archive are stored from 01475 onwards.Earliest extant Constitution of Melbourne Legacy, identified by J.H.B. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. Zilles Printers was begun by Lewis Zilles in the early 1930s. It was in McKenzie Street Ballarat. His son Jeffrey also became a printer - letterpress, offset and screen printer. The business became Zilles Printers/Graphics and was in Armstrong Street and later Bell Street Ballarat. The letterheads show the various addresses of the company. Letter, Australian Mortgage Land and Finance to Augustus Bostock, 1900
Augustus Bostock was the 9th child of Robert & Rachael Bostock of Vaucluse Epping Forest, Van Diemen’s Land. He was only 4 years old when his mother died. He was inspired by his father to seek his fortune in the Western District of Victoria. He arrived around 1850. He married Margaret Aitkin in July 1865. Augustus owned several properties in the district and leased others. He sat on the court of Warrnambool, Mortlake or Hexham as required. He resided at Marramook in Hawkesdale and later moved to Vaucluse in Hopetoun Road Warrnambool, where he died in 1920 at the age of 87. He was involved in many aspects of life in the Western District, racing, cricket, and social activities to name a few. This letter is written in reply to an earlier one by Augustus making himself available to do wool and sheep classing. This states of the availability of work at Delatite Station the property of Mr. Henry Ricketson one of many properties he owned.This letter follows from previous ones showing Augustus Bostock in his quest for work. Cream lined paper with Australian Mortgage Land and Finance letterhead printed at top of letter. The letter is handwritten in black ink with adjustments written in same hand as the signer of the letter. Dr Harry Jenkins owned Churchill Island from 1936 to 1963 and bequeathed it to Margaret Campbell on his death. Sister Campbell had been nurse to his disabled son and wife and she lived on the island from the time of World War Two. Ernest Morton Vains (1881 - 1951) was a local business man and Bendigo councillor who arrived in Bendigo in 1897 aged 16 from Kerang. In 1916 he founded the firm E M Vains and Co with his brother Sidney and they operated from Hargreaves Street in Bendigo with branches in Elmore, Mitiamo, Dingee, Knowsley, Heathcote and Prairie. E. M. Vains was a member of the City Council from 1922 - 1926 and was elected Mayor on August 29th, 1924. He played a prominent role in many of the City's community and industry groups and was a member of the Rotary Club which was founded in 1925 and a member of the Corona Lodge of Freemasons.
