Martha Downes was born at Codrington in 1880. She was grand-daughter of the first Presbyterian minister of Clunes. As a child she belonged to the Erskine congregation. She was trained at the Deaconess' Institute and was appointed to the Fitzroy Mission, where the Rev. A.I. Davidson was Superintendent. Miss Downes was placed in charge of the Gore St. branch of the Mission. She started a Sunday morning children's church, a Sunday School, a Sunday evening service, a mothers' meeting, a girls' and boys' club and other activities. She helped raise funds for the Young St. Mission Hall, which was built in 1912. In 1914 Sister Downes retired due to ill health, but returned in 1915 to take charge of the Erskine Mission. Her interest in girls led to the establishment of Erskine Hostel, in a delicensed hotel in Rathdown St. Carlton, where classes, guilds, club meetings and services were held. This has been a home/surgery for a number of general practitioners. Dr Hedley Francis Summons is listed on the 1931 and 1936 electoral roll as resident / practising here. He was born in Kew in 1899 (died in 1967) and married Elsie Florence Finlayson in 1925. They had a son and daughter. In 1937 the family returned to Melbourne from Edinburgh. He became Lt Colonel of the 2nd 9th Field Ambulance, 2nd AIF in WW2. He was taken POW on the fall of Singapore and there is a portrait of him by Murray Griffin done in Changi. Dr Lorimer Grant Morton (1904-1989) graduated in 1931 and was registered at 627 Whitehorse Road in that year until c1937. Dr Alan Herbert McNaughton graduated in 1932 and was the general practitioner during the WW2. He is listed at the address in the 1942 and 1943 electoral roll. He married Nancy Winifred Bottomley in 1940. Dr Jack Ramsay Collie (1914-1990) was a general practitioner at 627 Whitehorse Road from c1954-1980. He served in RAN in WW2; married Mary Sewell Graham in 1945 and had a son and a daughter. 627 Whitehorse Road probably ceased as a medical practice after his retirement. This example is from a later date than the Surrey Hills Medical Centre (SHMC) at 174 Union Road, which was purpose-built for Dr James Landells Blakie in c1911. Robert Clark was a self educated man who had arrived in Australia with his step father to take up mining in 1854. He worked in several local mines and being familiar with the hardships associated with mining life helped to establish the eight hour day for miners. Robert married Sarah Jane Kernaghan in 1862 and together they had nine children. Robert Clark was first elected in 1872 and remained a councillor until his death in 1883. Purchased by Mr. & Mrs. H. N. Lord in Japan in 1960. The Japanese word for cloisonne ware is SHIPPO or seven treasured ware. It is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects. The resulting objects can also be called cloisonné. The decoration is formed by first adding compartments or cells to the metal object. This is done by soldering or sticking silver or gold wires or thin strips placed on edge. These are visible in the finished piece, separating the different compartments. Coloured enamel is the usual filling for the cells. Cloisonné enamel objects are worked on with enamel powder made into a paste, which then is fired in a kiln. In older times inlays of cut gemstones were often used. They were decorated with geometric or schematic designs, with thick cloison walls. The AFB were aware that accommodation options for blind people were limited and sought to open a hostel to assist with this.The first hostel opened in Lara Street, South Yarra but could not meet demand. In 1926, a suitable property 'Egremont' at 54 The Avenue, Windsor, came on the market. The price was £2650. Lack of funds to purchase seemed an insurmountable barrier. With assistance from the Trustees of the Edward Wilson Estate and the Felton Bequest a deposit of £650 was raised. In a huge step of faith the Committee took out a mortgage of £2000. The interest on the mortgage and its repayments weighed heavily on the Committee. The Avenue, as 'Egremont' was commonly termed, was also a seven roomed house. Mr Paterson and the Architect, Mr Parkes of Oakley and Parkes, immediately began planning an extension, fourteen single bedrooms were added. They were filled from the Waiting List. A Windsor Auxiliary was formed and worked to reduce the mortgage of £2000. An active programme of dances, card evenings, theatre nights and the like took place under the leadership of Mrs. Robertson. The Auxiliary also took an interest in the boarders, arranging entertainment and social activity. £1500. was still owed in 1930. Living side by side is no easy task for a group of people, and the Hostel meeting minute books are filled with stories of disputes over wireless sets, telephones, hot water bottles and wardrobes. In 1958, with rising costs and the growth of aged care centres, the Hostel was closed and the house sold to a succession of private buyers.
