The Sturt Street Gardens run down the centre of Ballarat's main street. It boast many statues. In front of the depicted Ballarat Town Hall is the Boer War Memorial which commemorates soldiers who have taken part in the South African War. The scuplture is by James White, and it was proposed by Cr J.J. Brokenshire, and was approved at the Council meeting on 31 May 1900. The foundation stone was laid on May 1901 but was relocated to the present site and re-laid by the then Mayor Brokenshire. August Rietmann (1877-1951) of Lustdorf ,Switzerland, married Maria Frieda Oesschlager (1878- 1942) of Baden Baden, in Germany on 6/8/1910 In August 8th 1915 August and his wife Frieda migrated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia sailing on the Steam Ship ‘Osterley’ from Marseilles to Melbourne August and Frieda leased the Box Cottage in 1917 and raised 2 children Stefanie 1918-2006, and William 1920– 1997. August was a Monumental Mason / Potter / Sculptor and he was employed at Corbens Ltd Clifton Hill, to make the World War 1 Memorials for many Victorian towns c1920. This Soldier Statue at Coleraine was typical of many carved by August, however it was not usual for him to sign this work .Records have only been found for the Towns of Boort, Morewell and Coleraine. Other Soldier statue memorials in the same style are at Myrtleford, Benalla, Bonnie Doon and Yarck and possibly other towns. August purchased the property 1935,and established a pressed concrete business using the cottage as a workshop and storeroom After August died in 1951, William, his son, continued to work in the business from the site until the land was sold to Lewis Co. Ltd Timber Merchants in 1970. Rietman's Landscaping Ltd moved to Bay Road Highett 1953 and later to Carrum. The Rietman family is an example of the diverse nationalities that lived and worked productively in Moorabbin Shire 1871–1933 , the City of Moorabbin 1934-1994 and continues today in the Cities of Glen Eira, Kingston, Bayside, and Monash. August, a sculptor and stone mason, was employed by Corben Pty Ltd Clifton Hill to carve WW1 Memorials before establishing his own successful masonry business in the Box Cottage during the latter 1920s. After becoming interested in pressed cement casting, he took on apprentices (1930s Depression) and among his products were garden furniture, pots and also street lamp standards, some of which were installed in St Kilda Road. This bust was commissioned and made in the years before Holroyd's retirement from the bench. It is not known precisely when the bust entered the Library collection or the circumstances of its execution and commission. Justice Holroyd (1828-1916) was a judge of the Supreme Court for 25 years, after a successful career at the bar. Charles Web Gilbert (1867-1925) was a largely self taught sculptor, only tackling the medium of marble in the years before World War One. After the war he made a number of War Memorials, but his best known work is his statue of Matthew Flinders, the explorer, in Swanston Street.The portrait of Justice Holroyd is of interest as an unusual depiction and commemoration of a Judge. It is notable as a work by the distinguished Australian sculptor Charles Web Gilbert.Marble portrait bust of Justice Edward Holroyd. The bust is made of white carrara marble. The pedestal is made of rouge marble. The bust is slightly larger than life size. The head is finely detailed, Holroyd is shown wearing contemporary clothing, but the detail is less fine, than for the head and beard.The bust is signed and dated 1901 -

Ron Barassi, an ex-AFL footballer, participated in several Legacy events over the years. Ron was a a junior legatee after his father Ron Snr was killed in action at Tobruk in World War II, aged 27. President Geoff Webb presented a plaque to the Victoria Barracks Melbourne Corps of Guides in acknowledgement of the contribution of the proceeds of the Victoria Barracks Public Tours donations over the past three year, a total of $11,000 to Legacy in that time. A portion of these proceeds was designated to be used for maintenance work on the Legacy statue of the Widow and her Children in the Garden of Appreciation at the Shrine of Remembrance. More than 1,500 people visit Victoria Barracks Melbourne (VBM) each year as part of the Public Tours program conducted by the VBM Corps of Guides. Guided tours of the Barracks in 2005 operated on Wednesdays and Sunday afternoons as required. The plaque of Oppy reads: Hubert Opperman was born in Rochester, his early job as a Telegraph Boy encouraged his love of cycling. Throughout the 1920’s and 1930’s “Oppy” was the dominant figure in Australian cycling. He first won the Australian Road Cycling Championship in 1924. He won it again in 1926, 1927 and 1929. At the same time he was becoming and international star. This statue is modelled on his on his stunning victory at the Bol D’Or in Paris in the same year that he was highly placed in the prestigious Tour de France. His first place in the 1265 kms Paris - Brest- Paris road race was the highlight of his sporting career. That year he was voted Sportsman of the Year by a French newspaper. In 1991 Sir Hubert attended the Centenary Celebrations of the race and was honoured with Gold Medal of the City of Paris “Oppy” retired from cycling in 1940. Typically he celebrated his retirement with a 24 hour marathon at the Sydney Velodrome breaking one hundred and one records in the process. After war service with the RAAF he entered Federal politics holding the Victoria seat of Corio for the Liberal Party from 1949 until 1967. During this period he served as Minister for Shipping and Transport and Minister for Immigration. In 1967 he was appointed Australian High Commissioner for Malta, receiving the OBE in 1952 and was knighted in 1968. This Statue was officially unveiled by SIR HUBERT OPPERMAN On his 90th birthday, 29th May 1994Oppy signing Edna Barrie's leatherbound copy of 'Melton-Plains of Promise'. . The Inscription reads - To Edna with my Melton remembrances as the place I first rode a bicycle Hubert Opperman ‘Oppy’ [ 29/5/1904 – April 1996]. Isabella Park Taylor, nee Dawson (1842-1929), friend of Western Victorian First Nations people, and student of their languages and customs. Isabella grew up at "Kangatong" (1844-1866) in the company of First Nations people and became fluent in their languages. With her father, James Dawson, she wrote the book "Australian Aborigines" (1881). She married William Andrew Taylor in 1877 and they built a fine homestead on their property at "Renny Hill'' near Camperdown, Victoria. Together they had two children, Effie, born 1878 and Katherine in 1880. William Taylor (1849-1927) was a farmer, Councillor and civic leader. In 1883 he gifted the world's oldest statue of Robert Burns to the people of Camperdown. Has one double-deck horse tram in view along with many other horse-drawn vehicles. On the Ballarat Mechanics Institute building is an advert for "Morrey & Tyler, the Cash Drapers" at 11 Bridge St Ballarat. Also in the view are Ribble, Suttons, E Payne, the Ballarat Gas Co. building and a dentist along with other buildings. In the bottom right-hand corner is an insert photo of the statue "The Flight from Pompeii". The 'Widow and Children' statue was commission by Legacy and installed in 1998. The Garden is in a cruciform shape and is on the eastern side of the Shrine Reserve near Birdwood Avenue. It was formerly called the Garden of Memory from 1980-1986 according to Monument Australia website. One plaque explains 'the garden features the Flanders Fields poppies, the seeds which came from Villers-Bretonneux, France'. A range of souvenirs depicting local landmarks were produced to represent and promote Wodonga and other towns throughout much of the 20th century. THE WATER TOWER is a major landmark of High Street, Wodonga. It began operation from 1924 until it ceased operation in 1959. It stood unused for a decade until the lower section was modified and put to use as “The Tower’s Cobbler’s Inn” in 1962. In 1972 Wodonga City Council proposed to demolish the Tower. Their suggestion received an unfavorable response from the city’s citizens, so the Tower still stands today. THE SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL in Wodonga was unveiled on Tuesday 18th November 1924. The soldier statue on the top has since been removed and placed in the RSL rooms, WodongaAn unopened packet containing a souvenir drink coaster representing Wodonga, Victoria. Vera Scantlebury Brown was born in Linton in 1889, a daughter of Dr George Scantlebury and his wife Catherine, née Baynes. Vera undertook medical training at Melbourne University between 1907 and 1913. After serving in the British Army Medical Unit during World War I, she worked in various positions in Melbourne hospitals and then studied in the US and Canada. In 1926 she was appointed Director of Infant Welfare by the recently established Victorian Department of Health, and became responsible for the development of maternal, infant and pre-school services in Victoria. In 2023 a statue of Vera Scantlebury was erected in Linton's Avenue of Honour in Denison Street. This copy of the book appears to have been owned/used by Barbara Safstrom of Linton.Textbook for nursing students and other health professionals. First compiled by Dr Vera Scantlebury Brown, and published as a "Guide to Infant Feeding". Book revised (with Kate Campbell) in 1941, 1951 and 1958.
