It was at the “Schloss Cecilienhof” (Cecilienhof Palace) that Churchill, Truman and Stalin met from June 17 to August 2, 1945, for the Potsdam Conference. Cecilienhof Palace in the New Garden was the last Hohenzollern palace, built for the crown prince during the years 1913-1917. The end of monarchy in 1918 was another hard blow for the town, which so far was shaped by the Royal Court, garrison and administration. During the night of April 14, 1945, a British air raid destroyed large parts of the inner city of Potsdam. Battles against Soviet military units during the last days of April 1945 caused still more and heavy damages. The parks and their palaces remained almost unscathed. This vehicle is a Chevrolet but was fitted out as an ambulance at Fisherman's Bend, near Melbourne, Victoria by General Motors Holden. It was used by the Royal Australian Air Force during the Second World War. Purchased by Metropolitan Ambulance Service in 1989 from a Military Museum. This vehicle appeared in the filming of the movie "The White Mouse" (the story of Nancy Wake, French Resistance worker in the second World War). It also appeared in the film "Blonde" (the life of Marilyn Monroe). Four-wheeled vehicle used as ambulance. This floatation bladder was made for survival whilst crossing rivers and streams. The device would have been inserted into clothing and the user would have blown air into the pipe. The pipe would have been folded in half and held in place to prevent air from escaping.Tough rectangular, flat, khaki coloured fabric and rubber bag. There is a rubber pipe at the top, right corner. There is a fabric flap at the base of this pipe which holds the pipe in a bent position. There are also inscriptions on the front/centre of the bag.The following inscriptions are at the front/cente of the bag, printed in red. The very last inscriptions ('M. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. The Atlantic Star was instituted in May 1945 to honour those who took part in the Battle of the Atlantic and was intended primarily for award to those who served in shipping convoys and their escorts and anti-submarine forces, as well as to those who served on fast merchant ships which sailed alone. The Battle of the Atlantic took place between 3 September 1939 and 8 May 1945, as German U-boats attacked convoys transporting vital supplies from America and the Colonies to Britain. Warships of the Royal Navy and aircraft of the Royal Air Force escorted these convoys, hunted the U-boats and, despite some notable successes by the U-boats, eventually won a comprehensive victory in the Atlantic. Sir David Fairbairn KBE DFC was Honorary Colonel of 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles Regiment 1981-83. Sir David served with 21st Light Horse prior to World War Two. During WWII he served with the Royal Australian Air Force flying Spitfires in Britain and Europe, and later in the war, in the Pacific theatre. Following the war, he entered politics, holding the federal seat of Farrer from 1949-1975. He was Minister for Defence 1971-73. A wartime letter written by Arthur Evans that was later mounted on card for display purposes. It was donated to Legacy in 1998. The letter was written on the fabric of an aircraft wing. The letter was written by Arthur Stanley Evans while convalescing in Briston in 1917. He had been injured at Bullecourt, France with the 18th-16th AIF. The letter says 'Dear Minnie, Just a line to say your nice long letter arrived yesterday and I am now waiting the money etc. Have run out of paper so am scrawling this on a piece of wing belonging to one of Fritz's tubes that I saw one of our chaps having a scrap with in the air over our lines one day. "Fritz LOST". Glad Betty liked her little gift. Will write you later. I am improving every day and expect to have leave shortly. Love to all, Arthur." Not to let war time shortages of paper get in Arthur Evans way, he improvised and his letter to Minnie, it arrived intact. The fabric would be quite durable and light. A great memento to show family and friends.Despite war time shortages a little ingenuity can overcome many difficulties.Backing, ply board. A 4 page job application from Thomas Mullins for the position of Hostel Manager. Lists his war service and loss of his left arm in France 1916. Also the family casualties suffered; mother in an air raid, father and brother through war service, brother living with the after effects of gas, plus his wife's father was a Kandahar veteran. It continues with his civilian experience and how his attributes would suit the position, then provides references. Holmbush was the first children's home established by Melbourne Legacy. It was later renamed Blamey House when the first Blamey House was sold. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14.
