This item was donated by Captain David Frederick Paul who served with the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. He did two tours of duty. June 1965 to May 1966 with 1st Battalion with the Royal Australian Regiment and from May 1969 to May 1970 with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV).A newspaper article titled A Company, 1st Battalion in action. John Donald (Jock) VX19003 enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 29.5.40, served in Middle East, POW briefly in Syria then captured by Japanese in Pacific. Discharged from the army on 11.4.1946 in 2/2nd Pioneer Batt with the rank of Pte. Refer to Cat. Thomas Henry Deakin (1845-1915), born in Monmouthshire, Wales and his wife Janet (Jessie) Longmore (1851-1939), born in Morayshire, Scotland had 2 sons: John Henry (1879-1962) and William Andrew (1883-1939) and 4 surviving daughters. A fifth daughter Daisy Jessie was born in 1880 and died the same year at the age of 7 months. Elsie Longmore Deakin (1881-1969) was a nurse and remained single; Minnie Winifred (1886-1966) married Charles Williamson in 1923; Lily Vipond (1890-1943) married David Mair in 1910 and Jessie Alice, known as Alice, married Hector Williamson in 1921. Hector and Charles were brothers. Margaret was the daughter of Jessie Alice, known as Alice, and Hector Williamson. Donald was the son of Minnie and Charles Prosser Williamson who lived at 12 Barloa Road, Mont Albert. There may be transcription errors in the identifications on the back. It is not known who Howard is - unless there has been an error in transcription and it is one of the Deakin sons or sons-in-law, nor whether Jessie and Alice are correctly identified. This is part of a large donation of material from the Deakin, Mair and Young families.
