The primary role of a Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) member was that of nursing orderly in hospitals, carrying out menial but essential tasks - scrubbing floors, sweeping, dusting and cleaning bathrooms and other areas, dealing with bedpans, and washing patients. They were not employed in military hospitals, except as ward and pantry maids; rather, they worked in Red Cross convalescent and rest homes, canteens, and on troop trains. At the start of the First World War, Australian VADs were restricted from travelling overseas by the Defence Council. As a result, many chose to travel on their own initiative and join British detachments, often in Australian Hospitals. It is reported that the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital included in their nursing staff some 120 VADs, chiefly Australians in the British service, employed through the Australian Red Cross Society. Harold E. (Edward) Hurst (1888-1972) born on the banks of the Eumeralla River (near Macarthur) lived in a villa in Newtown called "Eumeralla" (Skene Street). "Boss" Hurst invented, patented and manufactured metal fasteners for wool bales and fencing. The Springthorpe Memorial is an elaborate late 19th century memorial located within Boroondara General Cemetery. Harold Desbrowe-Annear designed the memorial for the Melbourne doctor John Springthorpe, in honour of the doctor’s wife. Construction began in 1897, and the memorial was unveiled in 1901. According to Neil Leckie, Manager of the Ballarat Ranger Military Museum: * Originally 12 – 14 year olds went to Junior Cadets attached to their school. * From age 14 – 17 they were Senior Cadets attached to the local militia unit. * After 1 July of the year a Cadet turned 18, the Cadet left the Senior Cadets and became a member of the Citizen Military Force. * In October 1918 the AIF, Militia and Cadets were renamed to give some connection to the AIF battalion raised in the area. This wedding dress was made & worn by Marjorie Gertrude Schneider, elder daughter of Mr & Mrs A. A. Schneider, of Lorquon, married Harold Francis Rohde, youngest son of Mr & Mrs J. B. Rohde, of Gerang, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Woorak, March 2nd, 1949.The dress was handmade by the bride, Marjorie Schneider.A charming frock of ivory cloque, inset with a yoke of beige lace with scalloped edges, cut on very flattering lines. The bodice, fitting perfectly to the waist and the back having a row of buttons, was ornamented as the shoulder with a diamante clip which had adorned her mother's wedding gown. The full skirt was draped softly from the waist, & extended into a long train at the back. The halo of orange blossom, which held the veil in place, set off to perfection the exquisite bride.
