‘By Wagga Design’ is the winner of the Art Quilt Australia 2019 Expressions: Wool Quilt Prize. Barbara Mellor, of St Helens in Tasmania, made this quilt after researching the history of waggas and was fascinated by this early form of recycling. ‘By Wagga Design’ is her contemporary take on the traditional wagga that was born out of hard times and limited resources. Barbara wrote the poem below while thinking of the workers who used waggas while travelling: Black night campfire night sheep in the shadows dreams on the track a comforting wagga stitched with love for a homesick heart. The wagga was made in 2017 and was first submitted into the Bay of Fires Art Prize. In 2018 the wagga was submitted into the Break O’Day Stitchers Quilting and Embroidery Exhibition, where it won the Hanger’s Prize. Barbara sourced the fabrics used from a variety of places. Some are from her personal collection while others were given to her. She purchased a woollen three-piece suit from a local op shop and decided to incorporate it into the design, making some unique and distinctive shapes. Another distinctive feature of the quilt is the patch labelled ‘Parkside’. Barbara noted that it was cut from a blanket she purchased from a garage sale from a property that had once been a caravan park titled ‘Parkside’ in the 1960s. Arthur Lock was a Rat of Tobruk and served as President of the Albury Rats of Tobruk Association. 14,000 Australians were in Tobruk during the siege. On return to Australia the veterans looked to maintain the ties created amongst those who were in Tobruk during the siege and to ensure their needs were supported. In 1944, the Rats of Tobruk Association, NSW was established. This was followed by the establishment of the Victorian Branch on 2nd October 1945. Other branches and sub-branches were established across Australia and a Federal Council was established in 1946. With the passing of the survivors of Tobruk, most branches have been wound up with the exception of the Victorian branch. Since 2012 the Rats of Tobruk Association Inc. has opened up affiliate membership to descendants and relatives of the original "Rats" in order to preserve their legacy.This item is part of a collection of items owned by Arthur Lock, a member of the 2/23rd Battalion, an all-volunteer Second Australian Imperial Force which served as part of the garrison during the Siege of Tobruk, then at El Alamein, New Guinea and Borneo. It has particular local significance as the battalion was know as "Albury's Own" because a large majority of the battalion's initial intake of volunteers came from the Albury–Wodonga region. These mid-1960s Peacock and Gold brand lighter fuel hand warmers were used in Falls Creek to keep out the cold. The concept behind the hand warmer is that through combustion (ignition) of lighter fluid (light petrol distillate) it becomes a catalytic heater, relying on a catalysed chemical reaction to break down molecules and create heat. The devices could get quite hot, not hot enough to set paper on fire, but hot enough to give a nasty burn if sustained contact against your skin occurred. The construction of the device is very simple. There is very fine rolled wire mesh which fits on top of the reservoir body. After you fill the reservoir with lighter fluid, vapor pressure builds up. The device ignites by heating the grill with a match or lighter until it glows red. There is no open flame. The hand warmer also had a velvet bag to place it in after igniting to prevent direct skin contact. They were able to generate heat for up to a whole day. The Japanese company Yamato Shokai Ltd was founded in 1923 in the city of Osaka. Destroyed during air raids in 1945, the factory was rebuilt in 1946. They manufactured the Peacock brand pocket-warmer and sold it internationally.These items are significant because they were commonly used at Falls Creek.The pocket warmer is a small, relatively flat device with a tank at the bottom and a burner mechanism a t the top. "PEACOCK/MADE IN JAPAN" is engraved near the burner. The warmer fits into a metal case which features a series of ventilation holes in the shape of a peacock's tail.
