Five swinging bells were installed at Sacred Heart Cathedral in September 2001 and were rung for the first time 30/9/2001. The cast bronze bells were made in France and their eventual size and tones were decided based on the size of the belfry. The bells are each named after a saint; St Liborius, St Augustine, St Patrick, Mother of Good Counsel, and Blessed Mary McKillop.Newspaper article from 2001 written by Monsignor John Duffus, Sacred Heart Cathedral. Hearing Aid, British Hearing Aids (Aust) P/L, Transitone & Universal Hearing Aid, Estimated: 1954
The first all transistor hearing aids appeared in 1953. They were created to replace vacuum tubes; they were small, required less battery power and had less distortion and heat than their predecessor. The vacuum tubes were typically hot and fragile, so the transistor was the ideal replacement. The size of these transistors led to developments in miniature, carbon microphones. These microphones could be mounted on various items. There were body hearing aids where the earpiece was connected to the hearing aid and battery pack worn on the body. Ear level hearing aids consisted of eyeglass, behind the ear (BTE), in the ear (ITE), and in the canal (ITC, CIC) hearing aids. Hearing aid with Pink and silver metal pack with attached wire to ear piece. Uses (A) battery. Ear piece moulded for wearer with dials for adjustments. In original box. Transitone and Universal Hearing Aids were manufactured by British Hearing Aids (Aust) P/L. Model 61T. NoV848 "TRANSITONE & UNIVERSAL/HEARING AIDS/BRITISH HEARING AIDS (AUST) P/L" printed on fabric inside lid of box. Inside battery compartment, label "MODEL 61T" ('T' handwritten) "V848" inscribed on hinge. -

This apparatus was devised by Hamilton Irving an English general surgeon in 1907. Supra pubic prostatectomy surgery was being performed more frequently due to improvements in procedures. The receiver was said to be easy to apply, comfortable to wear and effective in keeping the patient dry and able to move freely in bed. Plan - Subdivision Plan, Tregarron Estate, Kew, c.1929
Pru Sanderson, in her groundbreaking ‘City of Kew Urban Conservation Study : Volume 2 - Development History’ (1988), summarised the periods of urban development and subdivisions of land in Kew. The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. A number of the plans in the Kew Historical Society’s collection can also be found in other collections, such as those of the State Library of Victoria and the Boroondara Library Service. A number are however unique to the collection.Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence of the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold on which a built structure was subsequently constructed as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens. In January 1929, the Kew City Council called for tenders to construct Tregarron Avenue. The subdivision of the Tregarron Estate in Kew was for 11 lots bordering Tregarron Avenue and its entrance from Burke Road. The plan includes annotations that indicate the measurement of each block and the placement of the drainage and sewerage easements. This plan is interesting for a number of factors. The house blocks today have different street numbers, some blocks were to be further subdivided, and at the time of the subdivision, alterations were still being made to the extent of lots offered; lots 2 and 3 on the plan were subdivided and reoriented.subdivision plans - kew, tregarron estate, tregarron avenue -- kew (vic.), burke road -- kew (vic.) -

Photograph - Royal Australian Survey Corps Electronic Distance Measuring Equipment Demonstration, c1960s
This is a set of five photographs of CAPT James ‘Jim’ Leslie Stedman in the field demonstrating the setup of prisms used as electric distance measurement (EDM) receiver reflectors for tellurometer equipment and the sighting of a large surveyor’s light. This equipment was deployed in establishing mapping and geodetic control operations. The photos were most likely taken in the late 1950s or early 1960s. The tellurometers of this era were man-portable systems that improved geodetic survey efficiencies for rapid network extension and densification replacing triangulation with EDM and theodolite traverse sometimes using Bilby Towers to extend line lengths. Jim Stedman later reached the rank of Colonel, was Director of Military Survey from 1975 to 1978 and was appointed as Colonel Commandant (honorary appointment, Retd) of the Royal Australian Survey Corps from 1978 to 1983. Jim Stedman is demonstrating EDM equipment. See item 6180.16P, photos .14) to .16) for more information and photos of Jim Stedman’s EDM demonstration. Photograph - Gabillot and Dunn Children at Bogong
MEYER COLLECTION - FALLS CREEK PHOTOS In 1947 a determined group of like-minded State Electricity Commission (SEC) staff including Ray Meyer, the chief surveyor of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme, had a common interest that revolved around the skiing potential of the snow-covered high plains which included what is now the resort of Falls Creek. The six SEC employees, Toni St Elmo, Ray Meyer, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson (together with their families) banded together to secretly build a 'hut' that was the first ski lodge at Falls Creek. Using a road built in 1930s to gain access to Falls Creek, their hut project was carried out in secret as efforts by other skiers were blocked by H.H.C. Williams – the engineer in charge of the Hydro Scheme. In 1946 Ray Meyer made a trip to the Lands Office in Melbourne. He came away with a 99-year lease on three acres that was ideally suited for a hut designed by Lloyd Dunn. Adrian Ruffenacht (Design Engineer for the KHS) had suggested where the group should build because of easy access to a spring for water. Much of the building material required was scavenged from derelict huts on the high plains. Due to the need for secrecy, the determined group worked on the hut in the evenings and weekends to avoid detection. During the building period the group had met at Echidna Rock (now known as Eagle Rock) where Skippy St Elmo announced, "This is my favourite ‘Skyline’.” And so the first lodge in the area at Falls Creek Ski Resort came into existence. With the development of the International Poma in the 1970s, the Skyline Lodge, which was sited between the ski-lift’s pole one and pole two, was demolished. However, the legacy of Ray Meyer, Toni St Elmo, Jack Minogue, Lloyd Dunn, Adrian Ruffenacht and Dave Gibson and Skyline lives on in the vibrant atmosphere of Falls Creek Resort. The MEYER COLLECTION documents developments on the Kiewa Hydro Scheme and their life at Falls Creek from the mid 1930s to 1960s.These images are significant because they depict aspects of the life of a pioneering family of Falls Creek and the founders of "Skyline", the first lodge at Falls Creek.A coloured image of children at Bogong.
