From 1988 to 2021, Legacy held a public speaking contest for young secondary school students. It was initially called the Junior Plain English Speaking Award (JPESA) and later called Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award (LJPSA). Schools were eligible to send along up to 4 representatives to compete in a preliminary round. This State Final event was held on 17th October 1996, the National Final was on 11th November 1996. The event had co-operation from the Department of Education and the major sponsors were Melbourne Newsboys Club Foundation and Oxford University Press. The Victorian winner was Ross Ditcham, of Flinders Christian College, Hastings. Runner up was Luke Raffin from St Joseph's in Echuca. The following was taken this programme in 1996: "The Award aim is to promote enhanced oral communication skills for 12-14 year old students and to help young people appreciate the ideals of Legacy - voluntary service, caring and comradeship - and the need for remembrance. It began in 1988 in the Melbourne area with the support of the Ministry of Education and The Plain English Foundation. Entries have grown from 24 in the 1988 competition to over 300 in schools across the Stat, plus greater numbers participating in the process of selecting four contestants from each school. In 1995, a successful Interstate Championship was held with contestants from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland." A group photo of a group of Legacy girls on a camp at Mount Evelyn in May 1946. The accompanying letter says that Miss Enez Domec Carre is in the centre with Legatee Buth in front of her looking between two girls. Also in the picture is Legatee Vines and Legatee 'Grat' Gratten. The photo and letter were sent to Legacy by Val Hutchinson (nee Wigg) and the photo had been forwarded to her by the family of her good friend the late June Whitechurch. An article in the Legacy newsletter of August 1946 says that on 19th may, 90 Junior and Intermediate girls travelled by Red Cross coaches to St Mark's Holiday Camp at Mt Evelyn. The girls were divided into 4 teams distinguished by coloured sashes in Green, Gold, Red and Blue. The teams competed against each other in sports and other activities that were awarded points. A pleasant hike was arranged to Mr Beveridge's Log Cabin which was where Mr Beveridge took this photo.A record of a camp for young girls in 1946. A photo Mrs Winifred Fotheringham at the official launch of Legacy Week in 1990. She helped promote the 1990 Legacy week as she was the oldest Legacy widow and had reached 101 years of age. A Mechanics Institute in Bacchus Marsh dates from sometime in the 1850s. The first Mechanics Institute Hall was erected in 1858 in Young Street.(Victorian Collections no.659.) In 1883 a new and larger Mechanics Institute Hall was built in Main Street. The new hall cost 2,000 pounds to construct. It was opened by Sir William Clarke on 21 November 1883. The Mechanics Institute Library and rooms at the front of the hall were removed when the building was renovated in 1971. The building still stands and is used as a public hall.Small black and white 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the Jeremeas Family Album which contains photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by the photographers Stevenson and McNicoll. The photo is of a substantial brick building under construction. Scaffolding support poles line the front and also can be seen on the top and back of the building. On the rooftop stand three workmen, with a further seven men standing at the front. Three men lean or stand casually at the front in casual poses. Four men stand in a line in another group on the roadway, perhaps indicating that they are master craftsmen. One of these men holds a tool of his trade, resembling a bricklayer’s mortar board. Six boys can be seen, four in a rather jaunty pose. In an indication of its public significance, the four front windows and door are arched and have decorative stone work in the side panels.
