Scrap book containing invoices relating to accounts to be paid by the Ballarat School of Mines between 1870 until 1875. The School of Mines at Ballarat was the first school of Mines in Australia and was established in 1870. The works done to the former Ballarat Circuit Court House were overseen by Robert Davidson (architect and Surveyor) with the contractor being James Williams. Large book, green leather with red binding, numerous original invoices pasted onto the pages. The first pages of the scrapbook includes correspondence relating to the refurbishment of the former Ballarat Court House which was used as the Ballarat School of Mines from 1870. This book was awarded to John Thomas Good as First prize for French in the Sixth form in 1880. John enrolled in Ballarat College in 1878 at the age of 12. In the original register his parent/guardian is listed as Mrs. H J. Munch, Beulah Glenthompson.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in brown half calf with college crest embossed on front cover. Six raised ornately decorated bands on spine with gilt lettering on second and third compartments. Marble edging with marble end papers. Dampness and water damage, with the book having been plastic covered (plastic removed 2013). The minutes of the Melbourne Legacy Wives Association from 1968 to 1978. The wives of legatees established the Legacy Wives' Association to help support their husbands' work. They often helped the widows' prepare costumes for the children' annual demonstrations. They also held golf tournaments and events that helped fundraise. The meeting in 1968 mentions the president of the Legacy Wives Association was Norma Cooper, who was the wife of the President of Melbourne Legacy in 1968. President J E Cooper also attended and spoke at the meeting.A record of the business practices for formal meetings in the 1970s and that Legatees' wives provided a valuable support to Legacy.Red cloth covered minute book with lined pages.
