The buttons would have been brass and on a uniform of some sort; probably one belonging to the armed forces or a bandsman or a public utility such as the fire brigade. The source of the lettering has not been traced. Taken in 1877, this photograph features nine members of the Beechworth Volunteer Fire Brigade holding a cup that was awarded to the group for winning the double hose competition. The cup is currently on display in the Burke Museum's 'Street of Shops' display Report of the event in the Ovens and Murray Advertiser, 3/4/1877 - The Fire Brigade Competition was held in Beechworth at Easter 1877. The double-hose competition carried a prize of ten pounds with an entry fee of ten shillings. The Fire Bell The first constituted meeting to form a Wangaratta volunteer Fire Brigade took place on 16th May 1876 at the Council Club Hotel Murphy Street Wangaratta. In June 1876 Council agreed to provide a Fire Bell at a cost of 10 pounds. In 1895 the bell was erected in Ford Street at the purpose built Fire Station that was later to become the Wangaratta Historical Society Museum. The bell can be seen in place in the Old Fire Station photo 000001.

This hat was part of the uniform of the Country Fire Brigade. The organization now known as the Country Fire Authority was established in 1945 as a volunteer and community-based organization providing fire fighting and emergency services in regional and rural areas in Victoria. Today the organization includes career fire-fighters and funding is partly provided by a levy included in local Council rates. The owner of this hat is not known. This hat is of minor interest and is retained for display purposesThis is a hat with a circular flat crown made of black felt with 4 eyelets. Around the edge of the crown is a brown leather band with a fabric bow fastening and a black cloth ribbon with a red corded edging. In the centre is a brass badge with letters on it. The parade took place in Sunbury in 1919 and was held to welcome home the local returned soldiers, who had enlisted in World War 1. In the photograph the parade is approaching the intersection at Evans and Macedon Streets. Sunbury's Shopping complex now occupies the vacant land in the background, although for many years that land was the main sports ground.
