There are a number of horse-drawn carts, one motor vehicle and many pedestrians crossing the streets. In the view are the GPO, a building advertising Kodak Australasia at the Block, The Windsor magazine, W E Thomas Dentist, and Dunklings. By the Dunklings store is a double decker bus with the destination of Spring St, advertising Zebra stove polish. Foy & Gibson Pty Ltd was a major Melbourne department store located on Smith St, Collingwood, In the surrounding streets, the company owned extensive factories that manufactured an large variety of products for its stores. The company was a major employer and contributed to the successful retail sector in Melbourne and Australia. The passing cable tram line and Foy & Gibson benefited from each other. This advertisement can be found reproduced in a number of publications.Yields information about early Melbouren retail Black and white print from a 1908 catalogue glued to thick card with label below. May Coles (1915 - 2007) worked for more than 25 years at the exclusive Georges store in Collins St. May lived nearby the West Preston tram terminus and caught the tram to work. The work was commissioned by May to recall those special years of her work at Georges. Has a close association with May Coles who commissioned Norman Kirkpatrick to paint the work.Framed Painting of Norman Kilpatrick 1982, of W 785 west bound in Collins St with Georges Department Store in the background. Wooden frame, painted light and dark brown with light cream cloth inner from and cream lined. Stretched canvas over wooden inner frame stapled to main frame and covered with a Masonite lining on the inside. Clipping titled "Moving Out" about the loading of Ballarat Tram No. 30 to go to Kaniva. Acquired by the Kaniva Lions Club. Photo shows three cranes loading the tram onto the truck at the SEC's Ballarat North yard where it had been stored. Cutting date Secured to the top of the cutting with adhesive tape. One of large group of newspaper cuttings from John Bainbridge, 7/4/02. Item has been folded for inclusion within a scrapbook. Set of 5 - Timetables - Geelong buses that were introduced following the closure of the Geelong tram system. 1 - Trans Otway - Eastern Park and West Geelong dated 23/1/1956 - gives route and times. Photograph - Cable tram dummy outide Myer Lonsdale St, 1924-1925
Postcard of cable tram dummy stationary outside the double storey "Myers" warehouse and office building in Lonsdale St, between Elizabeth and Swanston Sts. Three boys in shorts sit or stand on the dummy. The dummy's destination reads "Brighton Rd", which dates the photograph as between February 1924 and December 1925, (not c1929 as written) between the construction of the track in this section of Lonsdale St and the electric conversion of the Brighton Rd line. Photograph - W2 tram 570 in Swanston St, 1930-31
Photograph looks southward along Swanston St as intending passengers stand on the safety zone at Bourke St. W2 570 with destination "Elsternwick, route 1" has just departed the safety zone and obscures another W2 travelling in the opposite direction. The street is busy with pedestrians and motor cars and new traffic lights (1928-29) control the intersection. The Leviathan Department Store can be seen to the right and workmen's ladders and equipment can bee seen far left. W2 570 was built in 1929 and fitted with newly adopted route number boxes. Produced by Tin Treasures, Toy City, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Painted in Melbourne City Circle tram colours, numbered tram 957, fitted with a Bank of Melbourne and "Take a Break with V/Line" roof advertisements. Based on the manufacturer's website, the roof advertisements are not original.Demonstrates a toy clockwork model City Circle tram.Painted tin plate model - fitted with a pantograph and two advertising signs. Equipped with a fixed bogie at one end driven by a windup clockwork geared motor and a swivelling bogie at the other with metal flanged wheels. Book, State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), Instructions or Rules to Motormen, post 1945
Handmade book with light green covers made from a cut file holder with brown paper glued on the inside, containing 39 typed (original) sheets of paper giving Instructions or Rules to Motormen. Has five page index, then 34 pages, with 104 rules or instructions, covering Tramcar Equipment (electrical), location of faults, tramcar braking, failure of the mechanical brakes, tramcar emergency braking, automatic braking, automatic electric signals and general instructions for Ballarat. The brown paper appears to have been placed on the outside, as it is cut and glued on the inside of the book. Individual sheets held into the book with a metal clip. On the rear of the book, a small piece of cardboard has been glued over the back of the metal strip. Notes mentions bogie trams, so therefore post 1945. Gives details of route electric signals, use of doors on the trams relevant to the central median strip. On page 4, has hand drawn diagram showing the motors in series and parallel. On page 8 has a hand drawn diagram showing the car lighting circuit arrangements. Has been folded in the middle so as to store in pockets of a coat. The Conductor of the first set is walking across the road, possibly to punch the Bundy clock. In the background are buildings for Harris Manufacturing Tailors, Granger?
