This cap gun was found by a local Warrnambool resident in about 1971. Cap guns first appeared following the end of the American Civil War in the mid-1860s, when firearms companies experimented with toy guns to stay in business. Cap guns became especially popular when the heroes of cinema and television rode through the West ridding the territories of villains. Many cap guns were named after or endorsed by leading matinee idols like Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy, The Lone Ranger, Tonto, Dale Evans, Marshal Matt Dillon, or any of countless others. Cap guns became popular after the second world war and children all over the world emulated their heroes and collected and played with these toy guns. Eventually all of the famous cap gun manufacturers either sold out to other toy companies or started manufacturing other types of toys. Before it was deemed dangerous or politically incorrect for young children to point pistols at each other and fire at will, cap guns were a staple of toy chests. The item demonstrates how society has changed its attitudes and now regard these types of toys as morally unacceptable as they tend to promote violent attitudes towards others. The item demonstrates significantly how our societies social attitudes have changed since world war two from general societal acceptance of such toys to one of distaste.Toy gun; cap gun. The Ballarat Save TAFE campaign ran from 2012 to 2014. It was a Trades Hall and community campaign in partnership with the Australian Education Union and National Tertiary Education Union. The campaign was in response to significant financial cuts and closure of many courses by the Baillieu/Napthine governments. Availability of TAFE in Ballarat is particularly important in training future tradespersons and future provision of many services. Campaign President: Athan McCaw Campaign Vice-President: Brigid O'Carroll Walsh Campaign Secretary and Treasurer: Brett Edgington During the campaign, Premier Ted Baillieu visited Ballarat on several occasions only to be met by angry groups of citizens who were opposed to his government's decimation of Victorian TAFE. The picture shows one of the early rallies convened by the Ballarat Save TAFE Group and features Ted Baillieu entering a building in Lydiard Street, television reporters and a very noisy large group of protesters. Purchased from an opportunity shop, this dress is a stage costume bearing the label of Bonn & Mackenzie, a prominent UK costume designer from the 1950s to the 1970s. The dress appears to have been worn by June Bronhill (1929-2005), a prominent Australian opera singer and actress, whose name is handwritten on the label. Born June Mary Gough, she began using the stage name of Bronhill in 1952 in honour of her NSW home town of Broken Hill as a form of thanks to the local community who had helped raise money to send her overseas for professional training as a singer. Bronhill trained in London and gained early exposure with the English National Opera. She went on to star in many theatrical productions in Australia and the UK. She moved back to Australia permanently in 1976, and in 1980 was cast in her first television role as Mrs Crawford in the Australian version of 'Are You Being Served?'.Full-length short-sleeved dress of white cotton, lace and nylon, featuring elaborately ruffled sleeves and vertical stripes of lace on the skirt and bodice. The dress is open at the back, fastening with hooks and cotton ties to facilitate quick costume changes.Label, white cotton with red text: "BONN & MACKENZIE LTD. / TEMPLE BAR 1393". The property is in the area that later became Delta Street, on the north side of Back Creek. Once roads were made and streets numbered, this became 1 Delta Road, Surrey Hills. Part of the undeveloped land would become part of South Surrey Park. According to Alan Holt's property register the house was built in c1920 and was demolished after having been neglected in 1991. He records it having had various names: 'Westward Ho', 'Pembroke' and 'The Oaks'. The first owner from 1920 was Eric Rowland Handyside Long who married Agnes May Hay Murray in March 1920. They had one son James Murray Long, born in September 1921. They divorced in 1937 and thereafter the property is listed in the name of Mrs Mary Hay Long, James M Long or Miss Mary Hay Long. According to Alan Holt, the house featured in the television series 'Carson's Law' in c1984.This is one of relatively few photos which record the transformation of rural land into the suburb that became Surrey Hills.A simple dark-stained timber house with a veranda and tiled roof. It is simply fenced with posts and wire mess. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This transistor radio was manufactured by Amalgamated Wireless Australasia Limited (AWA), Australia's largest and most prominent twentieth century producer of radios, televisions, audio and telecommunications equipment. This item has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history and social history. Rennie Ellis (1940–2003) was as a pivotal figure in Australian visual culture. He was both a documentary photographer and a prominent presence in advertising, television and photography. Ellis was known for his candid documentary images of contemporary Australian life. His photographs of social events, such as music festivals, fashion parades or nightclubs are iconic, but his practice also encompassed the grittier side of life. In his AFL series, Ellis skilfully portrays the nation’s passion for the game, extending his lens beyond the boundary line to showcase the spirited fans alongside the on-field action. In Ellis’ photograph Malcom Fraser, VFL Grand Final 1979 we see a young supporter shake hands with Liberal Prime Minister, Malcom Fraser. In the grand Australian tradition, politicians and PMs are active in the football sphere. This work was shown in the 2017 Counihan Gallery exhibition Leather Poisoning, along with many other works by Ellis capturing the nations love of the game. Children's picture book that belonged to Phyllis Annie Diggins (nee Anderson). Phyllis and her sister Jessie Alexandra Diggins (nee Anderson) were sisters born in Bendigo. This book was donated by the son of Jessie Diggins. After leaving Bendigo the family lived in Kew. The sisters later married brothers - Joseph Diggins (Phyllis) and Victor Edgar Diggins ((Jessie). For many years the families returned to Bendigo to attend the Easter Fair, staying at the Shamrock Hotel. Phyllis was born 10.9.1908 and died 6.11.2004."Our Little Ones ABC". Dr. Leonhard Adam studied both Anthropology and Jurisdiction as a young man. Dr. Leonhard Adam's daughter, Mary Clare Adam Murvitz, presented this collection of her Father's printed archival material to Tatura Museum on 17.2.2006. in 1934 he fled from Germany seeking refuge in England. In 1940 he was interned as a security risk in England, sent to Australian in June, 1940. Interned in Camp 2 until 1942, released to Melbourne University where he catalogued aboriginal artefacts.Soft grey cover with Australian Emblem in white printing and red printing on the cover. The Ballarat School of Mines was founded in 1970 and was the first institution of formal technical education in Australia. 1970 marked the centenary of the School and that of technical Education in Australia. A centenary commitee was established to plan activities and projecty sot celebrate the occasion. These included five centenary lectures fro secondary school students, a film of the School to be made and shown on National Television, a centenary medallion centenary posters, a dinner for local organisations with Council and staff as hosts, an historical notebook on the school, a plaque mounted to mark the site of the original school, opening of the Mt Helen Campus, Relocating the Old SMB battery ot mt Helen, student reunion, Art display of present and former students, Mt Helen Open Days and distribution of car stickers. A Centenary Appeal was established to finance a Great Hall and Sports Centre at the Mt Helen Campus. The Appeal President was Cr W.J.C. North. The materials testing laboratory secured and retained registration by the National Association of Testing Authorities for a range of tests on concrete and metals. The student accommodation at Mt Helen 23 Page report (with supplementary finances) in a soft cover showing a picture of the Former Ballarat Circuit Courthouse which was used as the first building of the Ballarat School of Mines. The report includes a page of stamps produced to commemorate the centenary of Technical Education in Australia through the Ballarat School of Mines. The report was presented by Council President Morgan Bevan John. The report includes information on the new campus for the Tertiary Division at Mt Helen, including information on the buildings being constructed by local builders. The site plan was developed by G.J. Harrison and L.H. Vernon and Associates. The following staff resigned: E.R. McGrath (deceased), E.W. Ryan, I.L. Hunter. The following new appointments were made: R.l. Martin, G.K. Tampi, T.F. Norwood, K.M. Llewellyn, M.J. Evans, J.F. Clark, K.G. Millar, B.R. Rollins, L.G. Shome, C.I. Dowling, M.H. Pitfield, G.M. Pearson, J.P. Murray, J.R. Thyer. Page 10 lists diplomas awarded and page 11 lists scholarships and prizes including the Ballarat has Company Scholarship, the Josephine Brelaz Scholarship, The Frank Pinkerton Scholarship, The Mica Smith/Serjeant/Ironworkers Scholarship, Martha Pinkerton Scholarship, Ballarat City Council Scholarship, Junior Art Scholarship, C.R.A. Scholarship, B.H.P. Scholarship, S.E.C. Scholarship, Alexander Rushal Scholarship, Russell and Shirley Evans Scholarship. The R.W. Richards Medal for 1969 was awarded to Peter Hensley. A new I.C.L. 1901A computer and associated equipment was purchased for the Computer Centre. Page 15 has information on the Victorian Institute of Colleges (VIC). Marg Card unsuccessfully contested the 1998 federal election for the seat of Ballarat. She served as a councillor and mayor at the Moorabool Shire. Dianne Hadden was an independent member of the Victorian Legislative Council. She exited the Australian Labor Party in 2005. She stood for the seat of Ballarat East at the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 2006, but was unsuccessful. Karen Overington was a former welfare worker and served as a councillor and mayor (Sebastopol Borough) before she was elected to federal parliament in 1999. Karen did not contest the 2010 election. She died from cancer in 2011. Terry Bracks is the wife of former Victorian Premier, Steve Bracks. She is actively involved in arts and theatre organisations in Victoria and is a board member of Breast Cancer Network Australia, the National Film and Sound Archive, and the Australian Children’s Television Foundation. Jenny Beacham is a former Labor state secretary and was an ALP candidate for Ballarat in 1996.
