This book and a number of others like it were owned by the mother and aunts of the donor, Mrs Dorothy Boyle. They were prolific producers of hand knitted and hand made items of clothing and also knitted and sewed for the armed forces during the Second World War. The Sphinx was a magazine of Durham University students published between 1905-1922, except for the period between July 1914 and the end of 1918. This volume appears to be a collection of the cartoons originally published in that magazine.
