The Australian Natives' Association was a benefit association originally founded in 1871 for Australian-born white males. It was historically an influential organization, being a prominent supporter of the White Australia Policy and a campaigner for Federation. It amalgamated with Manchester Unity in 1990 to form the association, Australia Unity. The Warrnambool branch of the Australian Natives' Association, Branch Number 100, was founded in 1889 and was a prominent group in that town/city for many years.The original owner of this badge is unknown but it is retained as a memento of the A.N.A., an important group in Warrnambool for over 100 years. This stole came from the Murray family of Warrnambool. Mrs Stan Murray was the daughter of Archibald and Olive Mathieson and Archibald's parents resided in Naringal in the first half of the 20th century. Fox fur stoles were popular (but often costly) women's clothing items in the early to mid 20th century.This item is retained as an interesting memento of women's clothing in the past.This is light brown fox fur stole with tabs at the end with a leather lining. This is a school badge, probably attached to a school cap. The Warrnambool Academy was a private school for boys operating from 1900 to 1911. It was established by Richard Lawson in partnership with William Oakley, firstly in the Methodist Sunday School Hall in Koroit Street and then in ‘Upton’ in Canterbury Road. It was called the Warrnambool College Academy after 1903 following the purchase of Walter Murdoch’s private school, Warrnambool College. The Lawson/Oakley school was a successful one with a former pupil, Philip Le Couteur, becoming the Victorian Rhodes Scholar in 1908. William Oakley later joined the State Technical School system and became Principal of Wonthaggi Technical School. Richard Lawson became a teacher at Warrnambool High School and later a lecturer in education at Melbourne University and then Professor of Education at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. The badge may have belonged to a member of the Baulch family as a ‘Mr Baulch’ is listed as the donor 48 years ago.This badge is of considerable interest as a memento of one of Warrnambool’s important private schools early in the 20th century.This is a bronze-coloured badge in the shape of a shield with lettering around the edge and with a scroll with lettering at the bottom of the shield. These items were hand sewn by Annie Beryl Mathieson, the daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth Mathieson who lived at Naringal. The silk came from China, via family connections. This towel is a souvenir of the Centenary of Victoria celebrated in 1934. It marks the centenary of the officially-recognized first permanent European settlement at Portland with the arrival of the Henty families in 1834 in Victoria (then known as the colony of Port Phillip). European settlement occurred at Melbourne in the following year. This towel is one of many souvenir items produced in 1934.This towel is of minor interest as a memento of the centenary of Victoria. It is a comparatively rare souvenir of that event as towels such as this would have been used and most would not have survived for nearly 90 years.This is a white cotton towel with a white fringe at both ends. Sweetheart cards WW1 Woven silk postcards were produced in Krefeld in 1898 , Germany. Embroidered silk postcard were first made in Paris in 1900. The popularity of the silk postcard peaked during World War 1. The different examples shown reflect what, and to whom the soldiers sent them to during this period. An estimated 10 million hand made cards were produced from 1915 1919. Tjhe cards were generally hand embroidered by French women in their homes on strips of silk mesh, with as many as 25 on strip. They were then sent to a factory for cutting and mounting on postcards. Henry Southby pre WW1 served 5 years in the Militia and 22 years on the Permanent staff. He is listed as No 2240 serving in the 4th Batt Aust Commonwealth Horse during the Boer War from March to September 1902. By the time he enlisted in the AIF he was 41 years 2 months of age on 22.3.16 with the rank of Lieut in the 39th Batt. Embarked for England 27.5.16, embark for France 23.11.16, promoted Captain 23.4.17, WIA 7.6.17 shell wound to back, return to France 30.7.17, KIA 12.10.17 at Passchendaele. It is believed he was W.I.A and while being carried out by Stretcher Bearers a shell burst killing them all. No known grave.
