RMS Oceana postcard produced by Vienna Studio, 68 Beach Street, Port Melbourne. The Vienna Studio was run by Austrian-born Kallman FEITEL, first in Richmond around 1902 then in Port Melbourne from around 1904. The Oceana was built 1887-88 for P&O at Harland & Wolff, Belfast, Northern Ireland and sailed on her maiden voyage from London for Melbourne and Sydney on 19 March 1888. The Oceana collided with the Pisagua when leaving the Port of Tilbury, England and sank on 15 March 1912. The photograph is of Phillipos Varvarigos (Regos), taken in the 1920s. He arrived in Australia from Ithaca during the early decades of the twentieth century. He was married to Olympia and they had two sons, Nick and Nonda Regos. Many of the early Greek immigrants anglicized their surnames after settling Australia. 'Varvarigos' was often changed to 'Regos', 'Rigos' or 'Varigos'. A sepia studio photograph of a head and shoulders view of well-dressed man wearing a tweed suit and bows tie. Decorative carvings were possibly painted gilt which has since largely worn away. Portrait is covered in glass. Portrait is of a young lady wearing a white dress with a graduation gown over it. She has a mortarboard with a tassel on her head with a large bow at the back and she is holding a scroll in her right hand. She has a locket around her neck and a brooch suspending a cross at her neck. Bracelets are on both wrists. The words Bartlett Bros Bendigo are printed on the bottom of the matte surrounding the photograph. Ceramic plate gong and beater, made by Judy Lorraine possibly in her pottery studio in Wedderburn. Plate (a) is concave, mustard colour background with burnt orange and black decorative elements.
