This crystal goblet was presented to Mrs. T. O'Brien (Margaret O'Brien nee Leyden) on 26 January 1915 when the Starkie Memorial was unvieled by the then Shire President Cr. O'Brien. These badges were almost certainly issued to Leslie Samuel Woods of Albury who enlisted 10 May 1915 having completed first year medicine at Melbourne University. He served a year at the Convalescent Hospital, Harefield UK, before being ordered home to complete his medical studies. He would have completed his studies near the end on 1918 and attempted to re-enlist but had not entered training before the Armistice. Doctor Leslie Woods was a General Practitioner in Albury till his death. He is buried in Albury Waugh Road Cemetery.Well provenanced object illustrating the WWI experience of a young Albury man.Two lapel badges pinned to a piece of paper with a handwritten notation. Postcards were a common form of souvenirs for soldiers who were travelling around Europe either during World War 1 or just after, before returning to Australia. The link to Legacy is not known but there are many postcards are in the collection.Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War. The Victorian Railways "G" class Beyer-Garratt locomotives had 2 foot 6 inch gauge engines of the 2-6-0 + 0-6-2 wheel arrangement, that is it had a tender in front of the engine and a tender behind. Originally known as Smith's Siding, in November 1914 the siding was renamed "Pettits" following the sale of a nearby mill to the north. The sawn timber was initially carted out by bullock wagon but the mud and slush caused such difficulties that Pettits caused a thirty chain incline to be built from the mill to a tramway. The tramway connected the mill to the railway until 1924. An annual average of 2,450 tonnes of timber was despatched from the siding. No provision was made for passenger traffic. After ten years Pettit Brothers had cut out the area and moved on, abandoning the siding which was put out of commission on 23 September 1924. However, local residents, not wishing to suffer the loss of railway facilities, managed to have the siding reopened in February 1925 for goods and passengers. It was lightly patronised until all traffic ceased in 1936. B/W. Document on foolscap paper some notes on Dudley House Bendigo Victoria, Australia courtesy of Mr Geoffrey, C. Ingleton father was the former Town Clerk of Bendigo, appointed 1 January 1924. The layout of the building at ground floor level involved the removal of walls along the left side from the entrance creating one large room. Alterations required replacement of doors, 1920's style , with decorative glass panels and door knobs of the period. This report contains excellent descriptions of furniture installed at the house, including a grandfather clock, framed etchings, easy chairs with loose floral covers, and a number of 'occasional chairs' of Rose-wood or Cedar in Edwardian design. The furniture was purchased from Morley Johnson of Bendigo and Sydney. There were also china cabinets, a gramophone in a large upright rose-wood cabriole-shaped cabinet. The name Dudley house may have been earned by reputation, or had a connection to a former tenant - perhaps a State Official or a caretaker.bendigo, history, dudley house
