The two young women pictured at a Grecian Ball are Dimitra (Toula) Kandilotis (nee Makris) and Eutichia Drakopoulos (nee Vlassopoulos, Kioukiouris).During the 1940s through to the 1960s Grecian balls were organised by the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne. The Ithacan Philanthropic Society also conducted annual balls, the first being held in April 1918. The balls were were a much anticipated social event. Debutantes were also presented at the both the Grecian and Ithacan balls, very much a tradition adopted from Melbourne's Anglo-Australian society. Hazel, aged 5, was one of 3 little girls who presented a beautiful workbox for Princess Elizabeth to the Duchess of York in 1927. Although barely visible in the image, the writing on the side of the wagon indicates it belongs to the Marriott family. The man seated at the front with the reins in his hands has been identified as Alfred Marriott. The wagon is loaded with vegetables including cabbages and (possibly) carrots. Legacy have many programs to send young junior legatees on activities, camps and outings. The photo shows a junior legatee, Declan Deasy with a sack on his shoulder. It was used in an newspaper article in 1990. It said Declan was going to be part of a pilgrimage to Gallipoli to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Anzac landing with surviving veterans. He was the Junior Legatee chosen as Victorian Representative for the trip. The Federal Government-funded $1 million 11-day trip included a dawn service on Anzac Day. It was stored with other photos of Junior Legatees at camps from the 1980s and 1990s. Denis Sikiotis (Skiotis) is the young man who was lifting up his young cousin, Jim Morris (Mortaitis). They are pictured in South Yarra where Jim's family operated a milk bar located on the corner of Osborne Street and Toorak. Thomas Henry Deakin (1845-1915), born in Monmouthshire, Wales and his wife Janet (Jessie) Longmore (1851-1939), born in Morayshire, Scotland had 2 sons: John Henry (1879-1962) and William Andrew (1883-1939) and 4 surviving daughters. A fifth daughter Daisy Jessie was born in 1880 and died the same year at the age of 7 months. Elsie Longmore Deakin (1881-1969) was a nurse and remained single; Minnie Winifred (1886-1966) married Charles Williamson in 1923; Lily Vipond (1890-1943) married David Mair in 1910 and Jessie Alice, known as Alice, married Hector Williamson in 1921. Hector and Charles were brothers. Dave Mair was a very keen sportsman. This is part of a large donation of material from the Deakin, Mair and Young families. Mont Albert State School was officially opened on 23rd April 1917. The school became Mont Albert Central School in 1918, taking in Forms 1 and 2. The school remained a Central School until 1964, when the secondary years formed the basis of a new High School, the Box Hill North High School, later to be named Koonung Secondary College. This is part of a large collection of material related to the Deakin, Mair and Young families, all with connections to Surrey Hills and Mont Albert. Laurie Young was the daughter of Beryl Mair (1916-1976) and Ernest Lance Young (1915-1999). The family lived at 5 York Street and later 11 York Street, Mont Albert. Laurie was born on 18 August 1947. The young people in the photograph were attending an Ithacan Ball which was held at The Delphic in the early 1950s. The Delphic was located at Alfred Place, off Collins Street, was a popular venue for balls, dinner dances, wedding receptions and other social functions. It was owned by Bill Dellas who was well known amongst Melbourne's Ithacan community. Bill migrated to Melbourne as young lad from the neighbouring island of Lefkada. Seated on the left is Nina Kallinikos and second from the right her sister, Calle Kallinikos-Selover; in the centre is Lula Black nee Kavadeas and her brother Spiro. The young woman seated at the end has not been identified and neither has the man standing behind the group.
