[from a contemporary report:] The Shire of Eltham District Society's Parade float theme for 1989 was gold mining which, of course, was a most important aspect of our early history. Bruce Ness assembled the float with items loaned by Warrandyte Historical Society and quite a bit of his own ingenuity. Phyllis MacDonald also arranged for the Victorian Folk Music Club to provide us with appropriate musical accompaniment. To provide a level of authenticity, a present day prospector, Jack Hodson, was in charge of the equipment on the float. Notes from Joh Ebeli to the Society Committee meeting regarding plans for the use of horse drawn vehicles in the Society's entry for the 1980 parade, including whether Jock Read who opened the 1979 Parade could be asked to participate. Other notes included references to his salvaging (along with a couple of others) of the facade of the Old Bakery and plans to see if it could be incorporated into a new large room to be built at the Eltham Living and Learning Centre and following up Council. Float passing by the stoned retainer wall of Our Lady Help of Christians near the corner of Henry Street and Main Road Eltham. The float included a bark hut encompasing the motorised vehicle towing a trailer representing pioneers with a banner reading "The true heroes our pioneers". People dressed in historical costume sit on the float. This same float also participated in the Centenary parade in 1971. Floats were generally organised by community groups. EDHS would be pleased to learn which group organised this float.
