This calendar of early Melbourne scenes was produced in 1938 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the firm in Melbourne. The size, layout and images were a copy of the original calendar produced in 1863. In 1938, the company's premises covered an acre in Bay Street, Port Melbourne and Charles TROEDEL (1835- 1906) called himself 'The Father of Lithography in Australia". Builit in 1950s and used till the mid 1970s within the Physics Department used in Melbourne. Clothing. Light cream in colour. Fine possibly silk tulle, tightly gathered at the front. Measuring 255 cms long, the veil is edged with a very fine silk binding. A shorter 78 cm long layer also tightly gathered, sits over the top. A third layer also 78 cm long is separated from the lower tiers. This Would possibly be the layer that came forward over the bride's face. It may later have been removed. Clothing. Infant's cream coloured silk dress. High round neckline with casing and 1.2 cm lace trim. Short puffed sleeves with eyelet casing at wrist, threaded with cream coloured satin ribbon tied with decorative bow. Lace trim (2cm) at hem of sleeve. Embroidered fabric insert on top of sleeve. Deep V shape embroidered fabric insert from across shoulders to waist on centre front of bodice. Fabric insert has embroidered patterns of sun shapes and leaves. Back of bodice has circular embroidered fabric inserts below the shoulders. Embroidered ribbon insert (1.5 cm) around waistline. Skirt has 7.5 cm hem. Above the hem is a border of embroidered triangular shapes (Base 5 cm, Height 30 cm) of sun patterns, vines, leaves and flowers.Centre back opening (25 cm) fastened with silk ribbon ties at neckline and two X one cm buttons and button holes. The lower section of the blouse is shaped above the waist with darts and pleats below the bustline at the front and at centre back. Front has lace bib below neckline.(45cm wide X 30 cm deep) dipping to a V shape across the bustline. Bib section made up of 4.5 cm broderie lace around the edge. Centre front opening (15 cm) from neckline, fastened with two press-studs with lace frill covering the opening. Short set in sleeves edged with pin tucks, ribbon and 4.5 cm broderie lace. Clothing. High round neck at back, with peaked revers at front. Press-stud closure at centre front, with three grey plastic buttons sewn to outside.(two missing). Button is impressed with a circular pattern. Short sleeves. A 4 cm wide panel increasing to 5 cm at centre front is set into front waistline, and extends into a belt at the back-3.25 cm wide and fastening with a metal press-stud. Six gored skirt. Almost certainly home stitched, as several dresses in the collection are of similar style. An oval shaped patch, 16 cm X 8.5 cm has been hand stitched immediately below the centre front waistline. Inserted band at front waistline, with a pointed overlap, shaped to 3.5 cm wide stitched down around front. Front opening bodice has a four press-stud closure, and two 1.75 cm white plastic buttons, sewn over the closure. Buttons impressed with a ridged pattern. Two darts on either side of lower edge of bodice, one dart from shoulder on either side of bodice. Six gores in skirt. Probably home stitched. Side fronts are gathered to the yoke, and have two darts on either side front, at the waistline. Short set in sleeves. Six panels form the A-line skirt. Some hand stitching on facings and hems. Clothing. Wrist length, dark cream, machine stitched leather gloves. Machine stitching-two rows, gives the effect of pin-tucks, are sewn in a diagonal direction from the outer wrist, across the back of the hand. The shorter outer stitching, 4 cm long has two 6mm long leather stitches, at right angle to the machine stitching. The second diagonal stitching runs around the top of the glove, and 9.5 cms across the back of the hand. It is offset with three 6 mm stitches at right angles. Clothing. Pair of short, men's gloves, with three 6 cms long pin-tucks fanned out across the back of the hand. Wrist edge of the glove is bound in the glove fabric, giving a .5 cm binging, which continues around a 7 cm opening at the inside of the wrist.
