In 1963 the Shire of Ballarat celebrated its Centenary. This book outlines the history and development of the Shire over the 100 years.Councilor Charles Edward (Ted) Brown was at the time Shire President.The District Roads Board was created on 7th October 1856 and on 24th November 1863 was proclaimed a Shire,thus making it the first Shire in Victoria. The man in the photograph is standing on the new CRB or Main Road (now Mt Dandenong Tourist Road). The date would be late 1920s. The building directly behind the man is a General Store that became a bank and is now a gallery. The FiveWays cafe is on the LHS of the photograph with the Mountjoy Guesthouse behind it up on the hill. The two elm trees that marked the Jeeves property are visible in the centre of the photograph. The image is from the album of Ivy Child. Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Most of these are glued into her photo album. The album covered the years from c1927 – 1932. Ivy married Henry William Burgess (1906 – 1968) in 1944. The photographs remain in their original state in the album with individual copies made. Most likely a scene of 'Mt Calvin', the homestead built by John William (Willie) Richardson for his wife Jeanie Green of Wandin. The house was built c1898 The Rowse family purchased the house and 60 acres when Willie and Jeanie Richardson with their 3 children moved to Brisbane. The Rowse family farmed the 60 acres for 35 years and the house was demolished in 1938. The photograph is from the album of Ivy May Child. The Ballarat School of Mines Magazine does not appear to have been publishing in 1914, 1915, 1917, 1918, and 1919.A red bound copy of the Ballarat School of Mines Students' Magazine, holding copies for years 1916 to 1923. 1916 The 1916 Students' Magazine features many references to World War One, including an image of Ted Cannon, a gifted artist attending the Ballarat Technical Art School (part of the Ballarat School of Mines [SMB] campus) from 1912. After completing his art course Ted was employed as an assistant teacher at the Art School, before taking a position as cartoonist with the Ballarat Star newspaper at the end of 1914. In 1915 Ted was awarded the prestigious Victorian Education Department Senior Technical School Scholarship. Only months into his scholarship, Ted volunteered for the AIF. Churchill Island Heritage Farm has a large photograph collection dating from the mid-nineteenth century to the last decade. This series of photographs show candid pictures taken by previous residents of the Island. Dr Harry Jenkins purchased Churchill Island primarily for his son, Ted, as a quiet place for him after he was paralysed in a diving accident. Churchill Island Heritage Farm has a large photographic collection dating from the nineteenth century. This series showcases photographs taken in the 1930s and 1940s and shows people who lived and worked on the Island during the Jenkins period. This photograph is of Ginger pulling a cart with Sister Margaret Campbell and Alice Jenkins riding along. Sister Campbell was Ted Jenkins' carer, and managed the daily running of the Island, eventually inheriting it after his death. The photograph is from the album of Ivy May Child. It shows a view across the holding of Walter Jeeves. Walter was the second son of Ellis Jeeves and grandson of Isaac Jeeves, the pioneer. Walter was given the house 'Kalorama' and 20 acres of lnd - most of it sloping. He established a commercial garden, initially growing vegetables but later flowers and shrubs. This land now forms part of Kalorama Park. The building in the photograph is the Kalorama Homestead with shrubs and trees planted in rows on the sloping site. He was a salesman and lived at 17 Sternberg Street with his wife Eva Mabel (nee Court) who he married in 1926. The aircraft KYEEMA, a Douglas DC-2, crashed into the western face of Mt Dandenong in thick cloud on 25th October 1938. All 18 occupants on board were killed. The aircraft overshot Essendon Airport by 20 miles. The subsequent findings triggered the beginning of air traffic control and the establishment of the Department of Civil Aviation. This photograph was taken in 1938 by First Constable Carl Tepper of Russell Street Police Station. Carl Tepper was a cousin of Frank Child, grandson of Ted Child. The photograph is from the album of Ivy Child. It shows a rare scene of the Mountain Grange Homestead. Mountain Grange was built by Thomas Hand on his 306 acres. By 1881 he had completed the homestead and a large barn. Thomas Hand died suddenly in 1888 and his family took over the property. His son William Hand lived in the homestead until 1931 until it was demolished due to white ants. The great barn was demolished in 1930. A new home was built and Will stayed until 1939 when the property was sold to the Shire of Lillydale. It is now the site of the Kalorama Oval. Program describes many events for the period December 2003 until November 2004 including a travelling exhibition entitled 'In the Drivers Seat' that expored motoring past, present and future which came to Bendigo at the Golden Dragon Museum 15 April - 31 May 2004. Also a postcard, which reproduces a poster used to promote RACV road service in about 1925. Also a letter from the donor, Des Akers explaining that the items belonged to his uncle Ted malone who attended foot racing events in the Bendigo area.event
