A number of black and white photographs recording the history of Collingwood Technical School's Boot and Shoe building. This building was burnt down in 1943. Machinery valued at £14,000 was lost. Total damage was estimated at £25,000. It was the only bootmaking school in Melbourne. (Scott p.48). It was replaced by the Footwear Trades building which was constructed between 1945 and 1947. The foundation stone for the new building was laid on 21st February 1945 by the Hon. T. T. Hollway, MLA, Minister of Education. The photographs include: The original Boot and Shoe classroom [1929]-1943; The Burnt out building 1943; Six photographs of the Laying of the Foundation Stone event on 21st February 1945 by the Hon. This series shows the extensive work and volunteering conducted on site by workers after it was turned into a heritage site. Lolly and Sophie were two Clydesdales who came to live on Churchill Island in 1997. The babies from the unmarried mothers at the Refuge remained at the Babies' Home until around the age of three years, when they were usually transferred to the Ballarat Orphanage in Stawell Street, Ballarat East. The Babies' Home was suddenly closed in 1973 under the Hamer Government. Yields information about the form and style of the early Geelong trams and assistance given to the Red Cross during the first world war.Black and white photograph, printed onto card (inkjet printer?) of Geelong Cross bench tram No. 18 in Corio Tce, now Brougham St outside the wood stores. Tram has the destination of Belmont. Taken after SEC take over with the sides of tram panelled in. Late 1930's. See Reg item 4317 for a different view. Two copies held.
