The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Most of the civic and sporting ephemera assembled by Francis Rigg were patriotic buttons. The use of these buttons as a means of raising revenue through patriotic sentiment occurred soon after Australia pledged allegiance to Empire. Buttons reflected ‘public sentiment, courage, patriotism, generosity and several [un- named] virtues’ such as the martyred mother of a ‘fallen’ hero. Attention was paid to attractiveness of design, encoded symbolism and high quality of production. Expressing ‘loyalty’, they were tokens to be kept for perpetuity. Female labour was used to operate the die that compressed the tin backing, photographic print and celluloid cover together. The pin was applied by hand. Women, of all ages, entered into the spirit of voluntary sales. Often they were sold at the entry and exit points of major pedestrian thoroughfares. The women of Kew set up a kiosk in front of the Post Office and the Railway Station to solicit their round, oval and square shaped wares. Pride in salesmanship was affected by publishing the name of the woman and her fiscal achievement in the major newspapers of the day. The button forms part of a collection of ephemera originally purchased by Francis Horace Rigg (19/10/1882-05/03/1946) of 50 Belford Road, Kew (Vic.). Frances Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, ultimately managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street, Kew from c. 1920 until the 1940s. After Francis Rigg’s death, the collection of buttons and badges was inherited by his son, Ken Rigg (14/11/1922-19/01/2014). The collection was subsequently donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2015 by his grandson Adrian Rigg during the Gallipoli and Beyond Commemoration. The collection covers a period of almost 40 years. The majority of the badges are patriotic buttons, issued and sold during and immediately after World War 1 to raise funds for national and overseas causes. This tin and its contents is a typical example of the common items used in a family home in Orbost in the first half of the 20th century. Tobacco tins would have been handy storage containers.1951.1 is a Havelock tobacco tin - Havelock Flake Cut - High Grade Tobacco. Inside the tin are various items. 1951.2 and .3 is a pair of white plastic earrings (1950's?). This shirt belonged to Dorothy May Mortlock (VF518245) who was part of the Australian Womens Army Service (AWAS). Dorothy Mortlock was born in Swan Hill and enlisted with the 3rd AUST AWS REC DEPOT.Light khaki-coloured shirt with detatchable collar (UA09.4.2), long sleeves. Shirt is fastened with five bakelite or plastic brown buttons. Three button holes along the collar line attach to detatchable collar, possibly via cufflink-style fasteners. Shoulders each carry an epaulette with a canvas badge, embroidered with the letters "A.W.A.S." in white' epaulette fastened by brown button. Light khaki to white topstitching throughout. In the Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tamboon and Omeo Chronicle on Thursday August 3 1893, there is mention of a letter from Mr Harry Roberts, Marlo Road, "offering to sell the corduroy road to the council for £10, on condition that the council arranges for the exchange of the old road for one on the nothern boundary of his property.-Application to be made to the Lands department for the necessary exchange of roads to carry this proposal into effect. From the secretary for Lands, asking the council to mark the roads required in the M'Colloch on the plan,-Attended" This is likely to be the man in the photograph. This photograph seems to be associated with a very early settler in the Orbost / Marlo area. The Percy Uebergang family lived at Tooram Park, Allansford from 1912 until 1992. Percy and Myrtle Uebergang's children were twins, Ray and Joyce born in 1926 who lived at Tooram Park until their deaths, Ray in 1986 and Joyce in 1992. Neither Ray nor Joyce married and following the death of her brother Joyce set up the Ray and Joyce Uebergang Foundation which supports the local community. Because of the manufacturing process, many surviving buttons and badges have been affected by inadequate storage, suffering from oxidisation and physical damage. These survivors are now historically and socially significant artefacts, revealing much about the attitudes and values of the period in which they were produced. These trousers are part of a Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps uniform. The Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps (RAAOC) is responsible for various logistics and organisational operations, such as maintenance of parachutes, fuel distribution, personnel administration, exlosive disposal and laundy operations. The trousers were manufactured in 1969 and were worn by an unknown RAAOC serviceman. The patches on the sleeves of the corresponding jacket denote that he had earned qualifications as a parachuter and a marksman and that he was a Warrant Officer 1. Due to the period of manufacture it can be presumed that the serviceman whom this uniform belonged to served in the Vietnam War.As historic military uniform trousers dating to 1968, it is presumed that this item would have been used in service during the Vietnam War. The wearer of the uniform is unknown, however the patches and flashes attached signify that the serviceman worked for the Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps, earned qualifications as a parachuter and marksman and ranked highly as a Warrant Officer 1. The item is representative of a type of uniform worn by high ranking RAAOC servicemen during the 1960’s. There is an additional strip of fabric attached to the right-hand fly which can be fastened with an extra button on the interior of the left-hand fly. There are two open hip pockets, one on either side, and another button-up pocket on the right-hand side of the back. Two hip pockets, one on each side, with rear pocket on right side fastened by plastic button; additional pocket sits in waistline on right side. Trousers have seven loops for a belt and smaller loops for metal inserts which support a Sam Brown belt. Trousers fastened by a zipper in front and flap which secures with a plastic button on the interior. Spare button is sewn into the interior waistband. Leg hem is reinforced at front and back with strip of synthetic binding, presumably to aid against wear from rubbing on boots.
