Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. GETTING THE GOLD, c1850s
Diggers & Mining. Getting the Gold. Slide: Sinking a shaft to a depth of 100 or 200 feet was a long, laborious and expensive job. But the big difficulty was that the course of the lead could not be ascertained, or even accurately guessed at, until a shaft had been sunk. When deep sinking began, many diggers did weeks of useless work, sinking a shaft down to where they thought the course of the lead lay, only to find that it was not there at all. Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. GOLD, c1859

Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. THE GOLD LICENCE, c1855
Diggers & Mining. The gold licence. The Government Camp. (As a result of the widespread dissatisfaction with the licence system which culminated at Eureka, the licence system and the system of goldfields administration by Goldfields Commissioners were abolished in 1855. For the rest of the gold decade, the digger was required to take out a miner's right - which cost 1 pound per year. The various systems of goldfields administration adopted after 1855 are set out in Unit 8 of this series.) Markings: 41 994.LIF. 4. Used as a teaching aid.hanimounteducation, tertiary, goldfields -

Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. DIGGERS AND MINERS, c1953
Diggers & Mining. Diggers and miners. Many diggers not only moved from field to field, but alternated between gold digging and other occupations. Slide; THE STATE OF VICTORIA - - - Gold digging and other sorts of labour have arrived at a sort of equilibrium; and streams of people are now flowing from the one occupation to the others, and visa versa. A few weeks ill luck at Bendigo disgust a man with his auriferous well sinking and he goes into some sort of service. A dispute with his master chiming in with some current takes of mining success sends him back to the diggings again; and so the stream flows backwards and forwards keeping - - - the wages of all kinds of labour at an equilibrium - - - (M.M.H., August 19, 1853) Markings: 46 994:LIF I.
