Administrative record - Warrnambool Friendly Societies Park Trust Ledgers, Friendly Societies Park Trust administrative personnel, 1871 to 1947
These ledgers are administrative records of the Warrnambool Friendly Societies Park Trust. One contains Minutes of meetings from 1931 to 1947 and the other is an Accounts Book with records of payments for salaries, insurance, rentals, ground improvements etc. from 1908 to 1947. Some inserts in the ledgers date back to the early days of the Trust. In 1871 the Friendly Societies of Warrnambool (benefit societies which mainly offered members heath cover, including the Oddfellows, Foresters, Hibernians,, Rechabites, Sons of Temperance, Druids and Protestant Alliance) established a sports ground in Warrnambool. This included facilities for cricket, football and Athletics Carnivals and other public demonstrations and meetings and was administered by a Trust with members representing each of the Friendly Societies. Today the area is a major sports facility and still has the name Friendly Societies Park but it is now administered by the Warrnambool City Council. These items are of considerable historical interest as they contain much detail about the early history of the Friendly Societies Park Trust and give researchers valuable information on the work of benefit societies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Warrnambool and also on a major sports facility still existing in Warrnambool. .1 Ledger of 380 pages with a black cover and beige leather spine and corners. The edges of the pages are marbled and the pages have printed red and blue lines. The handwritten entries are in ink. There are some loose inserts in this ledger. .2 Ledger of 510 pages with a black cover and beige leather spine and corners. The pages have an alphabetical index at the front and have red and blue printed lines. The handwritten entries are in ink. friendly societies park warrnambool, friendly societies in warrnambool -

Ledger Letter Book, 1871-1875, Swintons Stock book 1867, 1860s
This ledger is a Warrnambool Swintons Store stock book and contains the sales of stock from January to August 1869. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool area, erecting many buildings, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a shop in Timor Street Warrnambool, selling groceries, china, glass and hardware. In 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch shops were opened in Cudgee, South Warrnambool, West Warrnambool, Wangoom and Nullawarre. When William died his son Robert became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split in two with George Swinton and Sons selling furnishings, clothing and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling seeds, hardware and produce. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street. This ledger is of great importance as it is a very early memento of the Swinton stores in Warrnambool. It dates from only four years after the founding of the Swinton store in 1865 and gives us lists of products sold, the names of the buyers and the prices of the goods – a great source of information for researchers and all those interested in Warrnambool’s business history. The current Swinton business in Timor Street is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and, with the Swinton name associated with businesses in Timor Street for 152 years, is among the oldest family businesses in Australia. This is a ledger with a cover of brown paper lined with heavy-duty cardboard. The insides of the cover have a mottled brown and blue patterning. Both the cover and the inside patterning are much torn and parts of the cover are missing. The cover is almost detached from the body of the book. The pages are blue and have red lines for entry purposes. The entries are handwritten in black ink. The pages are mostly intact but they are very stained and the edges are tatteredswinton family, warrnambool, history of warrnambool -

Book, Minute book
This book is a diary (1926 and 1927) which appears to contain summaries of letters written to clients of the Warrnambool legal firm, Mackay and Taylor. The summaries give the name of the recipient(s) and the content of the letter. The numbers next to the summaries may refer to the number of the client or the number in the letter book. George Mackay who died in 1926 set up the original legal firm in Warrnambool in 1891 and merged with James Fletcher in 1893 to form the Fletcher and Mackay business. In the early 1920s J. Taylor joined the business then known as Mackay and Taylor. This business with other partners survived in Kepler Street until the 1990s. This book has some significance as it contains the names of many residents of Warrnambool and district during the 1920s and gives some indication of their dealings with their lawyers. It also shows the system used at the time to record the transactions of law firmsThis is a ledger with a black cover and red binding (foolscap size). There are 190 pages, each one ruled with blue lines and a red margin line. The entries are handwritten in black ink. Document, Licence Motor boatman, 1918
This is a licence issued to Leslie Palmer in 1918. It gives him authority to operate a motor boat across the banks of the Hopkins River near the mouth and to carry passengers. As there is a bridge at the mouth of the river it is assumed that this motor boat was used to go across the river from a private house, making it more convenient than going by road to cross the bridge. It was, and still is, a common practice to use boats to cross the river from private homes built along the banks of the Hopkins River. This is a significant item as it is an original certificate and is interesting because the licence was a restricted one, for use only in crossing the Hopkins River. This is a paper licence issued by the Marine Board of Victoria in 1918. The certificate has printed material and entries written in black ink. It has the seal of the Marine Board and the signature of the SecretaryWritten material: ‘Leslie Alfred Palmer of Warrnambool, oil, on the Hopkins River within a line bearing east from Point Ritchie on the western side of the mouth of such river to the opposite shore, 6th December 1918’ motor boat licence 1918, warrnambool, leslie palmer, hopkins river -

Document, 21/10/1805
This document is a reproduction of the page of the log book from the vessel HMS Euryalus, recording Nelson's famous signal at the Battle of Trafalgar. On October 21, 1805, Admiral Lord Nelson led the British Navy to victory against the French and Spanish navies in the Atlantic Ocean. The event became known as the Battle of Trafalgar. To commence the battle Nelson commanded his now-famous flag signal “England expects that every man will do his duty”. Nelson’s signal was transmitted from his ship HMS Victory in 12 separate flag-hoists, according to Sir Home Popham’s Telegraphic Code that had been supplied to the fleet as an experiment, with the numerical flags of the Admiralty official Day Signal book (1799 issue). The signal flags comprised eight that represented whole words and four that represented single letters - [ENGLAND] [EXPECTS] [THAT] [EVERY] [MAN] [WILL] [DO] [HIS] [D] [U] [T] [Y]. Nelson’s signal was received by the ‘reporting frigates’ who would then send them on to the other vessels. The signal was recorded by Captain Henry Blackwood who was in command of the HMS Euryalus. Captain Blackwood led a squadron of frigates, reporting back to Nelson on the movement of the French and Spanish fleets. Nelson’s famous signal was recorded in the log book of Euryalus and repeated to other vessels. The original log book is a canvas-backed manuscript written up from hour to hour during the battle. It is in the Nelson Collection at Lloyd's. Lloyd’s of London is a large insurance company in the United Kingdom. In 1803 Lloyd’s founded the Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund to honour the brave and provide for the wounded and dependents of those killed in major Napoleonic battles. Over the years Lloyd’s has accumulated an assorted collection of artefacts and memorabilia associated with Nelson, including this log book from HMS Euryalus. In 2003 Lloyds created a temporary exhibition to mark the bicentennial of Nelson’s Battle of Trafalgar. The display included key items from the Nelson Collection celebrating Nelson’s role in British Naval History. Lloyd’s now has a department called The Nelson Collection and Heritage Floor where historical artifacts are displayed and the story of Lloyd’s 300 years of history is told. This document, being a reproduction, is not significant in itself. However it's content is of historical significance for its connection to Admiral Nelson and The Battle of Trafalgar. Through the leadership and victory of Nelson, the British obtained the mastery of the seas over the French and Spanish and opened up the way for Britain to colonise many countries including Australia. The document is also associated with a wood sample from Napoleon's ship Victory that is in our Collection.Reproduction of a page of the log book of HMS Euryalus recording Nelson's famous signal at the Battle of Trafalgar.
