Newspaper clipping, (no date written, but probably Bendigo Advertiser, 1945) obituary for Mrs. Miriam Pethard, the mother of Lydia Chancellor. Photo of Mrs. M. Pethard in article. Miriam was born on the Bendigo goldfield to her parents Mr. and Mrs. Henry Peatling. The family arrived in Melbourne, after six months sailing ship journey, spent two years in Melbourne and then travelled on to the Bendigo goldfield by bullock wagon 'where they arrived just two years after the discovery of gold', settling in Long Gully. Miriam married George Pethard in 1879 at Bagshot. They then lived 'firstly in Ballarat, later Numurkah and Kyneton.' George Pethard established the Tarax brewing business in Bendigo. Miriam and George had a family of two sons (Cr. G.A. Pethard, Mr. William Pethard of Melbourne, and one daughter living, Mrs. Lydia Chancellor. Mac's Shortbread Co dates its history back to a family bakery in Abbotsford opened in the 1860's producing bread for the goldfields. This eventually became McAlpine's Flour. This business was sold in 1960 and the family then purchased a cake shop, leading to building a biscuit factory. (This is thought to have been the Surrey Hills site). The company outgrew this and moved to Kerang. An example of the furniture manufactured on the goldfields at Ballarat c.1900. Originally the business was established by Emanuel Steinfeld furniture manufacturer and retailer, who settled at Ballarat and in 1856 opened his furniture warehouse. Steinfeld left the Ballarat in 1881 and lived at St Kilda. He left his Ballarat business in the hands of two nephews, Sussman & Kornblum who continued the business in their own name.An example of colonial cabinet making in one of Ballarat's pioneering furniture manufacturing businesses that was founded in the 1850s. Wootton Lansell was a sailor born in Kent, England in 1825. after travelling to Nova Scotia and the Californian goldfields, Wootton arrived in Australia in 1850. For 18 months he worked as a mounted trooper in Adelaide before coming to Bendigo in 1850. He also spent time on the Ovens goldfields before returning to Adelaide for three months. He returned to Bendigo in 1854 and had some success in his hunt for gold before working as a carpenter. In 1854 he married Helen Hall He invited his brothers, George and William to join him in Bendigo and they initially set up a butchery, soap and candlemakers business in View point. George went on to become the "King of Quartz Mining'. Wootton eventually became a farmer at Leichardt, where he built "Myrtle Villa", but retained his interest in mining becoming a director of many mining and dredging companies. Diggers & Mining. Gold. The Chinese soon became very unpopular with the white diggers on the goldfields. (1) Much of the hostility to them was the result of sheer prejudice directed against people who were alien in race, religion, and language; whose standard of living, by European criteria, was low; and who did not mix with other diggers, but lived - preforce - in separate camps in the diggings. Diggers & Mining. The gold licence. The Government Camp. Slide: Attached to a Commissioner's headquarters was a detachment to the special goldfields police. Besides the prevention of crime and the arrest of wrongdoers, it was their duty to move about the diggings, seeing that every digger was in possession of a current gold licence.
