Examples of Melbourne Legacy Club newsletters, covering the activities of Melbourne Legacy Widows' Club. Information includes a notice from the Chairman of the Widows' Committee, dates of meetings, possible day trips and theatre outings, and cruises. The ladies were welcome to attend monthly meetings, card afternoons, indoor bowls competitions, outings and tours, plus the annual fete and Christmas concert. The first edition of the newsletter was in 1960, previously there had been a quarterly magazine but the distribution was limited, they changed to a 4 page newsletter format to reach more of the widows. By 1990 it had grown to 12 pages, then 16 pages in May 1991 with the introduction of black and white photos, and then to 20 pages in November 1991. Various pages of interest have been added to show different news items. The September 1992 edition of the Melbourne Legacy newsletter was the first to be called 'The Answer'. The name comes from the verse that guides the work of Legacy - 'In Flanders Field' and 'The Answer' (see page 2). This is an example of Melbourne Legacy Club newsletters, covering the activities of Melbourne Legacy Widows' Club. It includes photos of events. Information includes a notice from the Chairman of the Widows' Committee, dates of meetings, possible day trips and theatre outings, and cruises. The ladies were welcome to attend monthly meetings, card afternoons, indoor bowls competitions, outings and tours, plus the annual fete and Christmas concert. A photo of two ladies sewing costumes for an Annual Demonstration, it featured in the July 1954 Newsletter. The caption states 'The sewing room is always a hive of activity. Here most of the costumes are made for the Annual Demonstrations. Mrs E Brown and Mrs M M Livingstone take a turn at the machines.' They are possibly mothers of the junior legatees, though sometimes the wives of legatees also helped. Costumes were extremely elaborate and were often reused in different years. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. Professional photos taken by Keesing Photographic of Charles Munnerley, Joan Miller, a group of widows in the Widows' Club rooms sorting stamps and Beryl Billings, who coordinated the sales of used stamps. Some of these photos were used in editions of The Answer. Charles was the Committee Chairman in the 1990s and compiled editions of The Answer (see 00850). Joan Miller was the Widows Committee Coordinator for many years, with a regular column in The Answer (see 00849). The photo of Beryl Billing with the bags of mail is at 00633. A special luncheon was held for 61 World War 1 widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. Legatee waiters included Lucky Luscombe George Woodward and Alan Woodward. Ron Austin, a World War I veteran spoke to entertain the ladies. The article mentions that Legatee Jowett coordinates a month concert at Legacy House on the first Monday of the month. The concerts are free to Legacy widows and the artist are first class professionals. Around 180 widows attend regularly. A photo of a group of ladies in Williamstown for Operation Float in 1962. The lady second from left is Mrs Violet Allen who led the summer camps at Blamey House for many years. Operation Float was an opportunity for junior legatees to experience sailing or boating on Port Philip Bay, often organised while they were at a summer camp. Junior Legatees from the country were brought to the city for a two week summer camp, often at Blamey House in Kew, while Junior Legatees from the city were billeted with families in the country. At the time Legatee Bert Davis was CFO, and his daughter Louise was asked to help with the running of the Blamey House camp. Holy Trinity originally held their first organised services during 1885 in the recreation hall in Albany Crescent, Surrey Hills with the Reverend H E Taylor, then Vicar of St Barnabas, Balwyn, conducting the services. Mr E D Dyer donated the land for a church on the corner of Mont Albert Road and St George's Road, Mont Albert with the foundation stone being laid on 17 July 1886. The first church service was held on Sunday, January 30, 1887 with eighty people present. A new site on Union Road, Surrey Hills was acquired (lots 3 & 4) and a wooden church was erected and opened in 1907 on lot 4. It became known as Holy Trinity Surrey Hills. In November 1939 two tennis courts and a pavilion were erected on land acquired by the parish in a lane off Balmoral Crescent. The Holy Trinity Tennis Club had 80 years of distinguished success in match play until it closed in 2014.
