School Papers were produced as a result of the perceived need for more local content for children as the school readers were English. In 1896 the first school papers were produced for Grade 3 students. These were followed by Grade 4 in 1897 and Grades 5 & 6 in 1898. 1. The Bendigo Gas Company formed in 1859, established the Bendigo Gas Works and became an incorporated company in 1860. It produced coal gas for the community until it was liquidated and delisted as a company in 1959. 2. The Colonial Gas Association was incorporated in 1888, selling shares for 5pounds and 10 pounds. It was originally formed in London with the aim of raising investment capital for the construction and maintenance of gas works across the cities and towns of Australia and New Zealand. Originally a parish church, St Paul's became a cathedral in 1981 when Bendigo was declared a separate diocese. The church, designed by Robert A Love, was dedicated in 1868, with the bells being added in 1873 and the organ in 1883. The Sutton grange Congregational Church was built in 1865. Original services were held in the home of Mr James Grey who served the church for 50 years. The Bendigo Congregational church originally operated out of the Mechanics Institue building before moving temporarily to the Church of England school room. In May 1858, a meeting was held to establish a permanent building and tenders were called in September 1858. Eaglehawk was declared a municipality 22/7/1862. The 8 diatonic scales bells were cast in London and arrived in Bendigo in 1873, being rung for the first time at Easter 1876. However due to the unsafe nature of the bell tower the bells could only be chimed rather than rung from 1880. In 1963 they were returned to London for recasting and on their return they were installed at a lower level of the bell tower. Under the direction of Mr Joseph Post 50 members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) performed to at crowded house at the Capital Theatre in Bendigo July 1st, 1948. The programme included the Max Bruch's Violin Concerto in G Minor, op. 26; Dvorak 'New World'' Symphony; Weber's ''Oberon'' overture, Debussy's 'L'Apres midi d'un Faune''; chorale, 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring'' (Bach-Roberts,) gavotte from Suit No. 6 (Bach-Wood), Brahms'Fifth and Sixth Hungarian Dances, Percy Grainger 'Country Gardens; (Arr, Earle) 'The Mermaid'' and (Martin Shaw) 'The Song of the Music Makers'' Soloists for the event included: Miss Bertha Jorgenson a Castlemaie Local and well known talent on violin; Miss Kathleen Moore violin; Miss A Walk flute.
