This item is linked to the 'HMAS Encounter', possibly made on the ship c. 1913. In 1916 this ship visited a then unnamed island off the Western Australian coast, where the crew discovered two bronze cannons protruding from the sand. These cannons now in the WA Maritime Museum, Fremantle, have been linked to the "Mahogany Ship" legend by historian K.G. MacIntyre. Cribbage is a very popular card game, particularly with naval personnel. This cribbage score board belonged to Alexander Charles Forsyth who used it aboard H.M.A.S. Encounter in 1913. He was a stoker, service number 3086, from New South Wales. H.M.A.S Encounter, the fourth warship of that name, was built at Devonport Dockyard, Tasmania, for the Royal Australian Navy in 1905. She was a second class protected cruiser and in 1909 was lent for three years to the British Admiralty. In 1913 (the year marked on this cribbage board) she was in New South Wales and Queensland waters and in World War One she served in the Pacific region, taking part in the capture of German New Guinea. She was finally scuttled in 1932.Social significance: an example of leisure activities in early C20th. Historical significance: link to "Mahogany Ship" legend through H.M.A.S. Encounter. This is an interesting item with social significance as cribbage was a popular game, particularly in the 20th century, and it illustrates the pastimes of a generation past. It was given to Warrnambool and District Historical Society by a Wangoom couple and so may have local significance if A.C. Forsyth was related to this couple. H.M.A.S. Encounter was important in Australia’s naval history. Rectangular brass plate with rows of holes, grouped in tens. The University of Ballarat became Federation University and all sections of the Uni had equipment that needed to be replaced with the new branding. This item came from the Library at the Mount Helen Campus. Due to the size of the stamp and the date section, it is thought to be the stamp used for in-ward mail. Naive painting of the Creswick Post Office painted on site, "en plein air", part of his recording of the town. Litherland was born in Odessa in 1897 and arrived in Creswick in 1938, where he lived until his death in 1978. This painting and 65 others were bequeathed to the town by him.This painting records the life of the town of Creswick at a moment of time, in the naive style. Litherland became a character about town and a noted artist. The photo shows the opening ceremony of Henham Township by Lord Stradbroke (the man on the right of the structure). A strip of land 2 kilometres long and half a kilometre wide had been approved as suitable for subdivision into 591 quarter acre blocks valued at 30-35 pounds each. Unfortunately it turned out to be a "fizzer". Mr. Robert Martin - First Church of England was a clergyman stationed at Orbost - 1884-1891. Mr Martin, who was appointed by Bishop Moorhouse of Melbourne, to be Stipendiary Reader in charge of the district in 1885. Prior to that, Mr Martin, a retired sea captain, had unofficially conducted services in all sorts of places, where a congregation could be gathered together, though his business officially was that of a fire insurance argent. Matthew Hohner began manufacturing mouth organs in 1857 in Germany and became quite popular over the ensuing years with production reaching over 1 million units in the 1880’s. Control of the business passed to his sons around 1900. By 1920 the company was producing 20 million harmonicas a year. They sold to both sides of the conflict during the first world war. Other musical instruments were made by the company in the 20th century. Ernst Hohner retired from the firm in 1965 after 45 years at the healm. Harmonicas and mouth organs were mass produced in the later part of the 19th and into the 20th century and as such are items with which many people can identify. It has social and cultural significance. The harmonica has chrome top and bottom with wooden section in middle. Box is bright pink with label depicting a musical band in tones of orange and black.Harmonica has Jazz band and Made in Germany engraved on the top. This saucer came from the Warrnambool Congregational Church and was probably part of a set of crockery used by the church members at social gatherings. The Warrnambool Congregational Church was founded in 1862 when Robert Winton and Thomas Nayler conducted a meeting in Warrnambool to consider the possibility of forming a local Independent church. The first minister was William Pentland and the first church was in Liebig Street. A notable member of the Congregational Church was Samuel Nettleton who was the Superintendent of the Sunday School for 60 years. In 1940 a new church was opened in Henna Street. In 1973 there was a merger of the Congregational Church and the Methodist Church, resulting in the formation of the Uniting Church in 1977. In 1976 the former Congregational Church in Henna Street was sold to the Salvation Army. This saucer is of interest as a memento of the former Congregational Church in Warrnambool. It comes from the early 20th century days when the church would have had a strong following in the city. This is a cream-coloured saucer with double gold edging around the outer rim. Permewan Wright & Co Ltd were one of the biggest shipping agents on the Murray in the 2nd half of the 19th century. They were a cartage company established in 1856 in Geelong, who opened one of its twenty Victorian branches at Echuca in 1875.
