Twenty four page book including card covers on glossy paper titled "The Essendon Tramways" written by Jack Richardson, published by Traction Publications, Historical Series No. 153 in 1963. The story of the North Melbourne and Electric Tramway and Lighting Company. Note on page 3, advises that this book was the 2nd edition. Price at the time 3/- Details the historical background, a map of the tramway in 1906, relationship with the Victorian Railways, construction, rolling stock, carbarn, (depot) power station, overhead, takeover by the MMTB, connection to the City, 1963 map, expansion under the MMTB, services at the time of publication, Rolling Stock Roster, notes on some of the personnel of the tramway, junction details and dates of the various extensions etc. Includes a number of photographs, a list of railway and tramway books published by Traction Publications, a publishers note and on the rear cover a short biography on the author. 2459.1 - 1st edition of book - no cover page, rear cover remains. Document - Letter and Envelope, 1937
Five page handwritten letter on light brown or fawn lined paper within a brown envelope within Reg. Item 2488, page 105. The envelope has been glued to the back cover of the book and is address to "Mr. James Inspector / Electric Supply". Seven overseas stamps have been stuck to the envelope. The letter dated 11/10/1937 from an unknown person who lived at 305 Eyre St Ballarat, not signed, outlines the building the horse tram depot in Wendouree Parade. The person put in a quote as the plumber. Notes various aspects of working on the site, materials, difficulties, Thompson and Moore of the Adelaide as the contractors, number of people on the job, problems with the construction, wind damage, building the workers cottages, their rooves and the cash boxes for the conductors. Newspaper clipping contained within Reg. Item 2526, page 10, titled "From Horse Tram to Trolly Bus" (mis-spelt word) recording the history of the cable trams in Melbourne, the formation of the company, prohibition of steam locomotives, costs, mechanical problems, Council objections, rails, visit of Mr. Hallide, court actions, King St. track, take over by the MMTB and that "conversion war still rages" - and perhaps trolley buses. Item 2526, page 10, titled "Melbourne's First Tramcars" - noting that the Argus of 11/3/1962 reported that two of Mr. George Francis Train's patent tramcars had been landed in Melbourne with fittings for four more. Item said that promoters were negotiating with the City Council, but these fell through, as Council did not have the power to lease the streets for railway purposes. Newspaper, "Lament and Reverie on Passing of Melbourne's Cable Trams", "Cable Trams .... Clang Into History", 1940
Newspaper clippings contained within Reg. Item 2526, page 11 and 12. Cutting on page 11 titled "Lament and Reverie on Passing of Melbourne's Cable Trams", written "By a Former Traveller", with date of 26-10-1940 in blue pence. Notes that the person was glad not to know of the last run of the Melbourne cable trams, the previous Saturday. Laments their passing, rides, crews, St. Kilda Road, the tramcars and the services provided. At the base of the cutting has a photograph of cable trailer No. 1 being off loaded in Lonsdale St. to go into the Museum. Cutting on page 12, titled "Cable Trams .... Clang Into History" written by Hugh Murphy. Appears to have been written prior to their withdrawal in Melbourne but noting their closure at the end of the year. Notes the construction, the costs, Mr. F.B. Clapp, G. S. Duncan, operations, the various routes, the services and the gradual deterioration of the track. Has the Melbourne Punch cartoon of 10/12/1885, titled "Bail Up". Cuttings have been cut out from a sheet and pasted into the book. Set of 10 sheets, photocopied on heat sensitive paper, foolscap size graph paper sheets giving the weekday tables or runs for the SEC Ballarat trams following the closure of the Victoria St. - Gardens via Drummond St. North service. Gives details of 29 tables or runs, numbered from 3 Run to 38 Run. Each sheet headed "Weekdays". Each run details where the driver/conductor would sign on, time, the trips, meal breaks, finish time and the total time of the shift. A number of the sheets have minor notes or changes to the timetable in ink, primarily about the change of tramcar type. Sheet 3, Run 12 had a handwritten addition over the run details at the base of the run details. Was fixed to sheet with adhesive tape. Has been stored in separate envelope with sheets. Demonstrates aspects of the SEC governance system in issuing By-laws for the travelling public, as part of their Act. Yields information about fares charged for tram services in Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong. Issued to crews.Twenty page booklet, plus medium weight card blue colour covers centre stapled. Book cover has title "Electric Tramways of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria By-Law No. 1". Along the bottom edge is the printing number "TYE 1-27" and date, "November 1955" Pages are numbered pages 1 to 20, amending By Laws dated 9/3/1937 (See Reg. Item 3108) and with a list of subsequent dates in the first paragraph. Dated by the SEC 20/10/1955. Gives definitions, fares and charges, regulations re passengers, behaviour, smoking, dangerous goods, luggage and behaviour of crews. Gives schedule of fares and charges for Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong. Fares applied from 1949 to 1951 - see Reference. Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways at the end of the 2nd world war - when the tramway traffic was still high. Gives details of working hours, rosters for the week for conductors. Shows the additional trams to the basic service on Weekdays and hours of one man operation.Single large typed sheet of paper, titled SECV, Ballarat Tramways, "Conductors' Runs with daily roistered hours". Arranged with four main columns, Monday to Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and within each main column 9 further columns giving Run No, Take Up, Relief times, Ord Rate (hours), One Man Rate, Spread (always "-" except for two on Saturday). Sign On and Sign Off - either 10 or 15 and the Total Hours. Columns vertically ruled in red ink. Runs align with Motorman's, but have the run number with the letter "C" afterwards. In top right hand corner is date "11th October 1946" and initial "W.M." On front in bottom left hand corner and on rear in black ink "B.T.P.S. Significant in being a almost complete set of rosters for Bendigo prior to closure - appear to be have been copied for a discussion or information document for management at Ballarat. Need to ascertain whether they line up with the actual last timetable. No Sunday tables given - probably did not change them.Set of photocopies of Rosters for Bendigo. Not sure whether these were actually used or were at the stage of a discussion document - see sheet 30. Photocopied onto foolscap size heat sensitive paper and some loosing information. Yields information about the Victoria St terminus, passengers and the tram liveries in 1963.Black and white print on heavy matt photographic paper of No. 20 at the Victoria St terminus, c1963. Tram has the destination of Gardens, a Cook with Electricity and Ilford Film roof advertisements and one for dancing at the Civil Hall on the front dash panel. A number of ladies, including one using a walking stick, walking away from the tram. The Meagher's Hotel is in the background, with the names DA and FC Dowd on the wall and an advertisement for Melbourne Bitter. 2nd copy - laser print - with date etc on rear - added 22/2/2010, copy from Ron Hann. Ephemera - Ticket/s, State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), SEC Parcels' 4d, 1955? - 1965?
Yields information about the style and printing of parcel check tickets used in Ballarat and Bendigo tramways and how they were presented.Block of 10 No. 4d Parcel check tickets. Prepared as a block of 10 two part printed tickets, using red ink on 60 gsm reddish paper with the top half part having a part gummed back, stapled with a single staple at the top onto an off white light weight cardboard sheet. The ticket butt has the form number "TYE 3-18". The top portion was to be affixed to the parcel to be carried. It has the name of the organisations (SECV), "Parcel Check 4d", conditions of carriage and ticket number, suffixed with the letter D. The lower portion was retained by the sender, was to be initialled by the conductor, "Parcel Check 4d", conditions of use, ticket number and a space where to be initialled by the conductor. Ephemera - Weekly ticket, State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), SECV 2/6 weekly ticket, 1940's?
Yields information about the use, style and printing of weekly tickets used in Ballarat tramways and how they were presented during the late 1940's prior to abolition.Used SECV 2/6 weekly ticket, ticket numbers B 144630. Originally printed and stapled into blocks of 20 tickets. The ticket is printed on a manila 210gsm card and printed using red ink to give day numbers, monthly, week number, transfers, and day of the week, excluding Sunday. Numbered on the right end of the ticket. Static number (1 - 7) on left indicates maybe the day of the issue. The ticket has been nipped in the day spaces 10 times and has been nipped for the month of August and week 3. On the rear of the ticket is the details of the ticket use, allowing the passenger one return journey between City and section 3 or 4. Not available on Sundays. Ephemera - Ticket/s, State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), Set of SEC predecimal tickets - Wal Jack Collection, 1960's
Yields information about the style and printing of tickets used in Ballarat tramways and how they were presented at the commencement of the SEC fare system. Generally issued c1963, some have dates on rear.Group of eight different pre-decimal values of used SEC Ballarat Tickets, ex the Wal Jack Collection. Tickets already held on the BTM system in blocks. All except .7, have a tartan or criss cross back. 1. - 5d Green (5 No. - B400836, B265927, W808385, B400835, Z742326) - note the same as Reg Items 3991 and 3994, though the printing of the section marks do vary a bit. These were not imaged. 2. - 5d Green (M714336) - imaged - has different section system on the side to the above - used 1/3/1963. 3. - 6d Teal - (34 No.) - some sequential - All A series. Note the same as Reg Item 3993. 4. - 6d Teal (L918047) - imaged 4009i4 - has different section system on the side to the above. 5. - 8d Red - (5 No. all A series, 292132 & 3, 206314, 315138 & 362937) - note the same as Reg Item 3984. 6. - 2d Red (S306797) - different section layout to Reg item 3986. 7. - 1 1/2d - (Ad705016) - black ticket, with red overprint of 1 1/2d fare and ticket prefix number - similar to Reg Item 2115, but different sectional layout. The section layout is the same as Reg Item 2116. Has Bushells Pty Ltd Tea advertisement on the rear. 8. - 3d City Section, Orange - (3No. A032622, 036606, 047637) - note the same as Reg Item 3982. All have dates on the rear - August 1963. 9. - 3d Concession - Orange, (A447731, 470928) - note the same as Reg Item 3989 and 4001. One has date of 1/3/63 on rear. 10 - 4d Brown (7 No. Y997727, 998446, Z004193, 005655, 012671, 018609 & 024899) - Some have dates of 1963 in pencil on the rear. Note the same as Reg Item 3995, though different series letter. All tickets and Reg Item 4006, 4007, 4010 to 4018 were received originally in a folded cloth wrapper - wax canvas? - with "All Since 1/3/1963 /3d Concession since 1/8/63" written in pencil on it. Yields information about the style and printing of tickets used in Ballarat tramways and how they were presented at the various times during the SEC control.Five number - 5 No. - Paper SEC ticket - 10d in value, (10 pence) - black ink on off white paper, numbered A151322,57263, 187958, 190442 and 193253. The ticket price is in black ink while the ticket number itself is in black ink. On rear in black ink is a diagonal criss cross or tartan pattern. All tickets have been used. Not numbered on rear.
