Early settlers in the Parish of Moorabbin, County of Bourke, established market gardens and farms in the area of Henry Dendy's Special Survey 1841 Brighton. Small communities grew near Churches & Schools and shops and businesses were established. Following the opening of the Railway line from Caulfield to Mordialloc 1881 the shops and business moved from the Tucker Road /Centre Road ( East Brighton ) East Bentleigh area to be close to the transport. Shops, businesses and housing developed along Centre Road between Thomas Street and Jasper Road. The Forest Hill Chase Shopping Centre is amongst the oldest shipping centres in Victoria, opening on the 30th June 1964 as an outdoor strip shopping centre before being developed over the years into its current three-level form. In earlier years (c1923-1943), the shop was known as Mrs Sim's shop. Note that prior to c1928 the property was numbered 292 Mont Albert Road. Electoral rolls describe Victoria May Sims (nee Munday) as a confectioner but she also sold school requisites and other general household items. Her husband Harry Pascoe Sims died in 1926. The shop was taken over by Leonard William James Etheridge, whom electoral rolls and probate records variously describe as a grocer, stationer or builder. His sons Austin, Douglas and Leonard attended nearby Chatham Primary School. Leonard senior and his wife Marie Wanda (nee Chambers) lived in various locations around Surrey Hills after leaving the shop. Franz Gördes (b.1843) who immigrated to Australia from Germany in 1871. After docking in Melbourne Franz headed for the goldfields at Spring Gully near Beechworth, but didn't strike gold. He returned to his trade and opened a boot shop in Wodonga, which burnt to the ground the day before the opening. Undeterred, he rebuilt and operated the business until his death on 8 June 1928. He was survived by his widow, Margaret as well as six sons and three daughters. This shop, in Main Street Rutherglen, near Poachers Paradise pub (originally the Rutherglen Hotel), was owned and operated as a barber shop by Jack O'Keeffe. This photograph was thought to have been taken in the 1970s. Rosemary Myers spoke about Lizzie Daley in May 2012. She described the house as having lots of ornaments, and how she enjoyed going thereto buy ribbons and laces for a pair of baby booties she knitted for her school handwork at Melton P S 430. Margaret Nolan's memories of Lizzie: When we were young kids we would go down to visit our cousins, the Myers who lived on the Highway. My great grand mother Mary Luby lived in Reserve road when she came to Melton, she was married here in 1857. Her sister Ann nee Dowling was married to Henri Miers [Myers] in 1867. Her other sister Eliza married William Daley in 1862. He had a Bootmakers shop in the High street. Their daughter Lizzie later turned it into a haberdashery shop.
