Animal specimen - Grey-headed Woodpecker, Trustees of the Australian Museum, 1860-1880
The Grey-headed Woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker of the Picidae family, that is sometimes mistaken for the similar-looking Green Woodpecker. The species is known to have a grey face, neck, and underparts, with green wings and back, and underwing feathers that are a dark brown to dark grey-black with white dots. Although this can vary depending on location, with European and Northeast Asian birds having overall paler colours, to mainland Asian birds being darker overall. The species has a distinctive black mustache-like stripe on both sides of the face and the mature males have a red patch on the top of the head. These tree-clinging woodpeckers usually feast on ants, insects, and berries. This specimen differs in appearance from the common Grey-headed Woodpecker as its back feathers appear a dark grey, where in the wild these birds have sometimes quite vibrant green feathers. The eyes of the grey-headed woodpecker are also usually red with black iris, not white with black iris as in this specimen. The beak is also a pale yellowish colour on this bird, whereas commonly the species has a grey upper beak and pale yellow lower beak. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This male Grey-headed Woodpecker has a bright red head patch and distinctive black mustache-like stripes on both sides of the face, with additional black stripes running from the pale yellowish beak to the inner corner of the eye. The underbelly is a light grey and the back is a slightly darker grey. The underwing feathers are a light rufous-brown with white dots. The specimen is mounted on a sloping vertical wooden cylindrical stick attached to a mount. There are also two paper swing tags, one of which is torn in half.149a. / Unnamed / Catalogue page 60 /taxidermy mount, taxidermy, animalia, burke museum, beechworth, australian museum, skin, reynell eveleigh johns, bird, woodpecker, grey-headed woodpecker, gray-headed woodpecker -

Booklet, Human Pearls in a Beautiful Setting, 1910
This booklet (fourth edition) was written in Warrnambool in 1910 by William Britton Harvey. The book has the sub-title ‘A Study in Nature and Character – Being a Quiet Talk to an Imaginary Audience of Young Men and Young Women’. Born in Britain, William Britton Harvey was the Editor of the Warrnambool Standard newspaper from 1905 to 1919. It was he who initiated in Warrnambool the scheme known as the Annual Hospital Egg Appeal, a community activity that was later adopted by most hospitals in Australia. William Britton Harvey wrote other small books of a similar nature to ‘Human Pearls in a Beautiful Setting’. This book is important because it was written in Warrnambool in 1910 by William Britton Harvey – a prominent person in Warrnambool at the beginning of the 20th century. It is a good example of the type of didactic book written 100 years ago with the purpose of encouraging high moral conduct in the youth of the day. This is a small soft cover booklet of 32 pages. The cover is cream with a woven pattern and the lettering on the front cover is gold. The cover has one gold line separating the name of the book from that of the author and the letter ‘H’ has an ornamental border. The cover overlaps the pages. The pages are a cream colour with blue printing. There are six black and white illustrations. The cover is torn at the edges and there is some silverfish damage on the back cover. The book has been bound with one metal staple and tied with green string. The staple has been removed. william britton harvey, warrnambool standard, history of warrnambool -

Book, Warrnambool Past and Present x 2, 1907
‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ was written and published in 1907 by Edward Vidler. It is a seminal work on Warrnambool’s history. It is noted for its historical accuracy, its complementary value to Osburne’s History of Warrnambool published in 1887 and its presentation of historically important early photographs. Edward Vidler, born in England, was a writer, historian, journalist, editor and publisher. He was in the Geelong area in the 1880s where he produced a commemorative volume on that city. He was in Warrnambool in the early 1900s where he produced his book ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’ to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool. He also organized the establishment of the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board with the portraits of 204 pioneer men from the area. John Ward was a pioneer settler in the Warrnambool area. He was a Councillor (1880 to 1911) and Mayor and had a shop at the corner of Jamieson Street and Canterbury Road. He was an historian and wrote articles on aspects of early Warrnambool and a comprehensive history of Methodism in Warrnambool. Thomas Wicking was a noted Warrnambool historian in the second half of the 20th century. These two copies are most significant. Originals of this book are rare and the book is of key importance in the recording of Warrnambool’s history. Edward Vidler, John Ward and Thomas Wicking are all of importance in the telling of Warrnambool’s story. These are two copies of the book, ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’. .1 No cover, pages 1-82, (some pages missing at the back), bound with adhesive tape, inscriptions handwritten in black, stamp of Camperdown Historical Society, front and back pages slightly crumpled and torn. .2 Replacement hard cover in brown with gold lettering, pages 1-80, (some pages missing at the back), inscriptions handwritten in pencil and blue ink. Both books contain printed text, many advertisements and over a hundred photographs and illustrations of Warrnambool and district. .1 ‘M.Whitehead’ ‘Presented to the Camperdown Hist. Book, The Ancient East and it's story, Mid 20th century
This book was given in 1943 by the Warrnambool Technical School to Joyce Goodall. Considering that World War Two was in progress at the time, the book was an expensive one to be given as a school prize. But the donor was Miss Florence Lake, the daughter of John and Annie Lake and the step-daughter of George Rolfe of Lyndoch, near the Hopkins River mouth. Miss Lake inherited the property and built the residence known as Lyndoch that is today part of the Lyndoch Aged Care Facility. Miss Lake was known for her philanthropy and community work in Warrnambool. John King’s name has been crossed out in the book as he was no longer Principal in 1943. He was the founding principal of Warrnambool Technical School in 1911 and remained there for 29 years. The Goodall family established Wanstead Farm in East Warrnambool in the 19th century and Joyce Goodall was descended from the Mortlake branch of that family. This book is of interest because of its association in 1943 with Joyce Goodall, Florence Lake and Warrnambool Technical School. This is a hard cover book of 472 pages. The cover is brown with gold lettering and the image of a lion on the front cover and a scroll pattern on the spine. The book has a preface, 41 chapters and an index. There are eight colour plates scattered throughout the text. The book plate on the first page is printed and pasted in and it has typed material added to it. Another inscription has been handwritten in pencil. There are also several notes and quotations handwritten in pencil on the back page. The cover is stained and torn in some places and many of the pages are stained. ‘Warrnambool Technical School, Labor to Efficiency, 8th December 1943, for Outstanding Efficiency in Art Subjects, Donated by Miss Lake, Awarded to Joyce Goodall, John King Principal’ (the name ‘John King’ has been crossed out) ‘Joyce Goodall 198 Timor Street Warrnambool’ joyce goodall, florence lake, warrnambool technical school, history of warrnambool -

Book, Dougaln Index Register to NOK, Early 20th century
This book belonged to James and Catherine McGinness (both names are in the book). James McGinness (1842-1905) came to the Framlingham area in the 1870s and married Catherine Taafe in 1880. Members of the McGinness families had been involved in hotelkeeping in the Purnim district. James and Catherine McGinness had a farm at Framlingham (including the breeding of horses) with the property known as Riverview. The farm and derelict remnants of the house still exist today. The youngest son of James and Catherine was Paul McGinness, a hero of two World Wars and the founder of the airline Qantas. The original spelling of the surname was ‘McGuinness’ but James altered the spelling to avoid confusion over names with his brother John. This book is of interest because it belonged to the McGinness family of Riverview, Framlingham. Several of the names in the book are marked, especially those of ‘McGuinness’ showing that perhaps the McGinness family of Framlingham had expectations of claiming some of the money listed as unclaimed. This is a hard cover book of 472 pages. At the back of the book are several pages giving addresses of lawyers and opinions of the Press. The cover is red with an embedded pattern on the front cover and gold lettering on the front cover and the spine. The inscriptions are handwritten in blue and black ink. The book contains names of those deceased persons and/or their heirs who have appeared in advertisements regarding unclaimed money. There are several coloured insert sheets in the book with copies of letters of thanks sent by grateful readers. The cover is very stained and torn at the edges. ‘C. Calendar
This calendar has been distributed as a advertising item for Earl’s agricultural machinery and oil depot. The business was situated at the corner of Lava and Kepler Streets in Warrnambool. The name, Acmino’ stood for Allis-Chalmers, Mitchell’s Implements, Neptune Oils’. Distributing calendars at Christmas time for the following year was, and still is, a popular advertising tool for businesses. This calendar is of minor interest as an example of the use made by businesses in the 1940s of calendars as advertising tools. It also has a local Warrnambool connection, the agricultural machinery business of F. Earl. This is a 1946 calendar with a buff-coloured sheet of crinkled paper with a brown border. It has a coloured photograph of two men droving cattle near a river and it ispasted on to the paper with a brown border around the photograph. The calendar for 1946 is printed on to the paper and also in monthly sheets pasted on to the paper on top of each other. The printing on the calendar is brown. On the back of the calendar is written in black ink, ‘French Bros’. The calendar has a red piece of string at the top for hanging the calendar up on a wall or cupboard. Book, The Ozone Hotel Warrnambool, Early 1900s
This booklet was produced for Thomas Randall, the proprietor of the Ozone Hotel, Warrnambool. The booklet has the front cover missing and the title of the booklet is actually ‘A Visit to Warrnambool’. It is a publicity booklet given out gratis to prospective clients of the hotel. The Ozone Hotel was originally called the Grand Ozone Coffee Palace and opened in 1890 as a temperance hotel, a splendid building with over 100 rooms. In December 1891 the Coffee Palace was granted a Colonial Wine Licence and in 1895 it was renamed the Ozone Hotel. Thomas Randall was the hotel keeper from 1894 to 1907. In 1920 the Ozone Hotel, after being closed for some time, was re-opened as the Hotel Mansions and a full liquor licence was obtained in 1923. This building is regarded as the finest and most elegant building ever built in Warrnambool and this booklet contains the only photographs we have of the interior of a 19th century/early 20th century hotel in Warrnambool. This is a soft cover booklet publicizing the Ozone Hotel, Warrnambool, published for the proprietor Thomas Randall early in the 20th century. The front cover and several pages at the back are missing. The booklet contains advertisements, both local and Melbourne ones, black and white photographs of Warrnambool and district and of the interior and exterior of the Ozone Hotel, an article on the town of Warrnambool and extracts from the hotel’s Visitors’ Book. Richard Squire was a student at the School of Mines Ballarat In 1905 Richard Squire was manager of the West Berry Consols at Allendale, and developed an improved system of mine ventilation, which was supported in "The Age." He was successful in combating and remedying the gas and ventilation troubles of the Deep Mines of Creswick and Allendale Districts after all had failed. MINE MANAGERS’ ASSOCIATION. Ballarat Branch. ... Mr R. B. Squire, manager of the West Berry Consols, at Allendale, submitted a paper detailing what he had done tor the betterment of ventilation in the alluvial mines of Smeaton and Mary borough districts- Members gave Mr Squire every credit for the results that he claimed to have effected; the adoption of his ideas had testified to their value to mine-owners. It was painted out, however, that for want of a thorough debate of the subject with experienced men the author had unwittingly included some general statements that required modifying in some points and extending in others, in justice to other workers among the earlier and the present day managers of mines. It was decided to invite the author to meet a sub-committee on this subject!Oblong booklets with green covers of syndicate share certificates .1 Dark Green cover 1923 all used .2 Light Green cover 1924 four pages used .3 Light Green cover 1924 all used .4 Light Green Cover 1924 all used .5 light Green Cover 1918 - 1919 four pages used .1 Front cover torn but has notes written on it. .2 Leigh River Tunnel G 21st Call written on front .3 Leigh River Tunnel G 22nd Call written on front .4 Leigh River Tunnel G 23rd Call and figures written on front .5 3 shares isued out of this book, Leigh River Share Book No. 16 A 30 written on front richard squire, leigh river tunnel gold mining co., syndicate book, hy peacock -
Kiewa Valley Historical Society
Seal Skins Ski Straps / Soles, mid 1900's
These seal skin straps and webbing were introduced into the Victorian Alps by European engineers, conducting survey work for the SEC Hydro scheme in the late 1930s. This period in time produced many immigrants from a war torn Europe with highly developed technical skills. Many of these immigrants provided articles that were well suited to the alpine regions of Australia, ones they used in their homelands. These were times when the home grown cultures of the Anglo Saxon heritage of the earlier settlers within the Kiewa Valley became interwoven with the various European cultures and this formed, what in later years became the beginning of the Australian multi-cultural society. The Kiewa Valley and its surrounding regions where the major rural areas which did not progress in a so typical Aussie "dinky-di", "she'll be right" fashion. The European influence was however not too strong, so as to obliterate the flavour of the home grown rural society. The major populated sections of the upper Kiewa Valley and the Alpine regions were accelerated by the SEC Hydro Development which brought into the slow growing rural regions a quasi multi ethnic society, however this was only noticeable up to the time when the final Power Station was commissioned in the 1960s. The slight variations to the typical Australian rural settlements of the time were in some food preparations, winter apparel such as these seal skin straps and soles and "langlauf" (cross-country skis). The sealskins were sewn so that their grain ran from front to back thereby allowing the skins to grip going up hill and glide going downhill. The gardens and varieties of flowering shrubs and trees where also more in line with traditional European "outdoor" settings. Seal skin sewn onto one side of a strap of webbing. There is a webbing loop on the front that slips over a small point at the front of the ski. There is a webbing strap attached to the back of the seal skin sole coming over the back of ski that clips metal fasteners onto a loop of webbing behind the ski boot. alpine sports, snow skis, winter clothing, mount bogong recreational activities, snow sports
