1099.1 - photocopy of an article in The Courier, Ballarat Tuesday Feb. 9 1988, page 17 of the house that contained Ballarat ESCo tram No. 12 in the Tuesday Heritage Column of the newspaper. Contains a photograph of the house containing the tramcar. Newspaper Clipping details the former occupiers, the Rayner family, the construction of the extensions around the tramcar, family use, family history and some details of the family members and other local history. The copy of the newspaper Clipping has numerous pin holes in the corner and the rust marks due to use on a display on Tram No. 12 in a display board in the depot from about 1991 to 1998. From a copy made from the newspaper Clipping collection held by Alan Bradley. 1099.2 - copy made March 1999 of the same Clipping for record purposes and to have a good copy. (2 copies held). One worn TB uniform clothing buttons donated by a former Ballarat Tram driver. Button about 23 diameter, with TB crest, with backing piece and lug for sewing on rear. Nickel plated silver? Badge has been worn on a jacket as in poor condition compared to new. Has name of manufacturer stamped on rear part - "Buttons Ltd" of Birmingham, England with their trade mark, a pair of fully opened scissors. See tm1762i2 for image. Functional Object - Leather folder, 1960's
Two pieces of heavy brown leather about 4mm thick joined together with a lighter piece of brown leather glued and stitched with heavy thread to form a Trip Way Bill Holder for use on the SEC trams by Conductors. The outside of the folder has been tanned to give a dark brown tan. The inside of the folder has been stained light brown. The outer corners of the folder have been rounded. The folder has been scribed by a tool to give the item some presentation. Not known who made it, could have been SEC Depot Ballarat, upholstery workers.On the inside in the top left hand corner "Trip Way Bill Holder" in blue ink. Album comprises heavy cardboard covers with brown Rexene covers, with inside papers of heavy dark grey photo album paper, 36 leaves of dark grey photo paper and two brass interscrews within black grommets. See Condition Details re damage to back cover. Album contains 32 photos - personal prints of Keith Kings. Title page has been hand written to Les Denmead, dated 6/7/1970, thanking Mr. Denmead for his assistance over the years. Photos divided into the three SEC Provincial Tramway cities, each with a typed name proceeding the set of photos. Two further photos of Geelong were at the rear of the album, but were not in position when catalogued. One of these photos may be Reg. Item 1874 - photo of Geelong scrubber tram. Each of the photographs have been separately registered, as shown in the table below. Scanned images made of front and back of the photos. Badge - SEC pass - set of 12, AMOR, c1940?
Set of 12 Stamped enamelled round brass pieces with a hole stamped at the top and ring placed through. Used as a SEC tramways employees pass for either all Provincial tramways, Geelong, Ballarat or Bendigo only. All badges have the SEC logo in the centre, organisational name (State Electricity Commission of Victoria) in white enamel and outer ring the words "Electricity Supply Department, Provincial Tramways", or "Electric Tramways Ballarat" or "Electric Tramways Bendigo" or "Electric Tramways Geelong". This is in blue enamel. On the rear are stamped numbers and manufacturers name - "AMOR MELB" or "STOKES & SONS MELBOURNE" in the bottom portion of the pass, except .9 which is "STOKES" only. Part of the item in the first column is missing. Second cutting dated 3/5/1971 with headline about the possible revival of horse drawn trams in Ballarat. First clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, Thursday 19/8/1971 of two photos of a bogie trams in Sturt St. The first one with tram 40 derailed near the intersection of Sturt St with another bogie tram behind. Both trams showing destination of "Special". The photos are associated with a tram tour for Ballarat North Technical School. See Reg items 3765, 3766 for actual prints of the Courier photographs. Second cutting dated 23/7/71 discusses the replacement of the trams with buses, the various dates and trams being sought for preservation after closure, including the City of Ballaarat, the Borough of Sebastopol and the BTPS. Piece of heavily worn trolley wire taken from south bound ear, just before ear 41B. Wire in area (on the joiner side) had failed about two months prior to replacement. Sample taken 8 December 1997 during replacement operations. Was on a curve. Two screw marks at one end from being inside a wire joiner. Heavily worn over the years with groove only one side of wire. Top of wire green (oxidised) and dark grey on underside where not contacted by wheel. Has been cut at both ends. Wire curved after taking down naturally. B&W photograph mounted onto heavy cardboard (black front, green back) of a horse tram (No. 16 - from Reg Item 2726) travelling westbound on Sturt St. on the north side, with Town Hall in background. Many horse drawn cabs are waiting along side the centre median strip on the north side, and the back of one cab on the Lydiard St. kerb. A number of women on the top deck. "Typed caption on photo" "Tram going up North Side of Sturt Street 1897, Note Cab Stand." Photo is believed to be from a copy negative of an original held in the collection of the Ballarat Historical Society. Also has drawing pit marks in corners on photograph.
