The Merbein shops were originally owned by Spiros Raftopoulos (Levendi) who migrated from Kolieri, Ithaca, Greece. Pictured is Archimandrite, Daniel Maravelis with members of the Greek community in Mildura. He was born in Smyrna and was the Archimandrite of the Greek in Melbourne from 1915 to 1922. He presided over the official opening of the first IPS clubrooms located at Michael's Building, Cnr Elizabeth and Lonsdale Streets Melbourne on Sunday 23rd September 1917. The passenger liner 'Queen Frederica' was one of the many ships that transported Greek emigrants to Australia in the post World War 2 years up until air travel became a more efficient and faster means of travel. Between 1945 and 1965, two million immigrants arrived in Australia. The decision by the Australian Government to open up the nation in this way was based on the notion of ‘populate or perish’ that emerged in the wake of the Second World War. It is thought that this photograph was taken in Newcastle during a visit Melbourne Ithacans in the 1940s. Many Melbourne Ithacans had relatives who had settled in Newcastle. There was an established community of Ithacans in Newcastle dating back to the early 1900s. Stathy Raftopoulos was instrumental in bring Greek films to Melbourne and screened them in various picture theatres in the inner Melbourne suburbs where most post WW2 migrants were living. Prior to the opening of Greek cinemas various venues were used for screenings including Nicholas Hall in Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.With the advent of television many suburban cinemas were no longer drawing the crowds. It was at this time that Stathi Raftopoulos with his partners in the Cosmopolitan Motion Pictures company purchased cinemas in the in suburbs of Melbourne where Greek immigrants were living - in 1960 the National Theatre in Richmond; 1961 the Sun Theatre Yarraville; 1965, the Paramount Theatre Oakleigh, Kinema Theatre Albert Park, and the Empire Theatre Brunswick and Westgarth Theatre Northcote. Here they screened Greek movies which entertained the Greek community supporting them to maintain their link with Greece and their culture and traditions. The group photo was taken at the annual Ithacan Philanthropic Society picnic at Bacchus Marsh. The first picnic was held in 1918 at South Morang. The picnics were usually held at location on the outskirts of Melbourne and for many years Bacchus Marsh's Maddingley Park was a popular location for the picnicThe annual picnic has been held annually since 1918, except for 1919 when it was postponed due to outbreak of the Spanish Influenza in Melbourne, and in 2021 due to the Covid pandemic. In the early years the annual picnic gave families a chance to spend time in the countryside and to socialize with other Ithacans. Melbourne's first Greek Orthodox Church 'Evangelismos' in Victoria Parade East Melbourne was consecrated in 1901. Ithacans, as members of the Greek Orthodox Community, were directly involved in its establishment. A.J.Lucas the founding president of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society was one of a number of prominent Greeks who advanced funds to help with the purchase of the East Melbourne site upon which the church was built. Brother and sister, Panogiannis (Peter) Raftopoulos ( Bourlotos) and Kalypso Sofianos are photographed with Kalypso's children, Konstandina (Nina) and Spiros (Pip). Panogiannis was actively involved with the IPS. He was elected Secretary only about a year after he came to Melbourne. He proposed the introduction of the IPS Tertiary Bursaries which were introduced in 1988 and are now known as the Year 12 Awards. Haldan Turriff was the first matron of the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne. Haldane was one of a group of nurses under the leadership of Lucy Osburn who had arrived in Sydney in 1868, following a request from Henry Parkes (at the time Colonial Secretary of NSW) to Florence Nightingale for help to improve the standard of nursing in Sydney. Two weeks after their arrival their was an assasination attemt on HRH Prince Alfred. Haldane was one of two nurses chosen to care for him. The Alfred Hosital, which opened in 1871, was named after him and Haldane Turiff became the first matron.
