At the time of manufacture, circa 1940's, the first aid treatment for snake bites, was to lance(cut) open the bite, wash it out and apply a ligature or tourniquet between the bite and the heart. This method was abandoned later after scientific evidence suggested that it was better to stop the blood system from carrying the poison to the heart (pressure immobilization). Australian snakes do not have long fangs therefore deep incisions into main arteries is rare. This research took many years to develop therefore the information supplied with the "Sanax" kits of this era is well outdated. Rural areas were more attuned to the possibilities of snake activity on farms, in sheds and in out houses and farm homesteads. This was not the case for mainly city and large townships environments. The mice plagues in wheat areas during the warmer month s has always been a high risk time for encountering snakesThese snake bite kits were issued to workers on the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme. Some of these snake bite kits were kept at doctor's surgeries e.g. Bogong Village, House 13. The kit was carried by bushwalkers, scouts, farmers and high plains cattlemen. This item is of significance because it demonstrates the main dangers faced by all rural industries and towns, especially remote areas, and the portable remedies that where required as a necessity of the Australian bush environment. This item was in use at a time when the air ambulance and rescue facilities were not in existence and remote locations were more isolated and the availability of anti venom was hard to obtain locally.This item is a red coloured cardboard box(250 - 300 g/m) with white writing and containing the following 12 items. 7 clear red coloured capsules, 2 opaque red plastic capsules, 2 wooden capsules and 1 brass screw on capsule. The capsules are divided into two sections (compartments) horizontally. Each compartment has a screw lid. One compartment contains a lancet (for piercing the snake bite) and the other compartment contains the "Condy's" crystals compete with tightly rolled instructions.On top of the pull up lid, and flanked by two coiled snakes (at the strike position) is printed: "Trade Sanax Mark" below this " SNAKE and SPIDER BITE OUTFIT" and below this with instructions for use". Front side: "Sanax snake and spider bite outfit" underneath "Nepean Highway Morabbin" The later printing has been severely scratched but decipherable. The back side of the box has "Note to the retailer" and due to wear no more of the writing can be read. This game was advertised as a "new game" in 1909.Board game called Advance Australia. The board is divided in 144 squares with 136 numbered consecutively. The game was played with a pair of dice. The game has its unique form, with shipwrecks, lost in the outback, hazardous landings and high seas being some features. The leather tumbler and dice are with the game. Also, with the game there are two newspaper articles, one by David Horsfall the other by Leighton Rawlings giving a detailed description of the game. Pru Sanderson, in her groundbreaking ‘City of Kew Urban Conservation Study : Volume 2 - Development History’ (1988), summarised the periods of urban development and subdivisions of land in Kew. The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. A number of the plans in the Kew Historical Society’s collection can also be found in other collections, such as those of the State Library of Victoria and the Boroondara Library Service. A number are however unique to the collection.The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers and McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. A number of the latter are by noted photographers such as J.E. Barnes.The Warne Estate included four lots in Argyle Street, Kew. It represents a typical small-scale subdivision in this area. The lots for sale must have been further divided as there are now more houses in the street than there were blocks advertised in the subdivision. The agent left the proximity of the Outer Circle Railway off the plan. The Railway would have run along the triangular shaped lot 4. The 1st Kew Scouts was one of the first Scout Troops in Victoria, being formed in 1909. From 1927 they met in a magnificent Scout Hall in Disraeli Street, Kew until it was demolished in 1993. Still operating (in 2020) from their new Scout Hall on the corner of Kilby Road and Kellett Grove, Kew.A Scout Troop is divided into smaller teams called ‘patrols’. At this time the Scout in charge of a patrol was called a patrol leader (‘PL’) and his assistant a ‘second’ (‘Sec’). Each patrol of boys would chose a patrol name, often an Australian animal or bird. Other 1st Kew patrols called themselves the Kookaburra Patrol, the Kangaroo Patrol and so forth. The shield the Emu patrol is proudly displaying is possibly the trophy for being the ‘Champion Victorian Patrol’. The quarry was part of John Butler Maling's property. He was one of the original settlers of the area and farmed the area between Weybridge Street and Whitehorse Road. Clay was quarried from part of this area and used to make the bricks used in the construction of his home, known as 'Ancyra'. This is still extant at the corner of Weybridge and James Streets. Maling grazed cows and used the quarry as a water source. He was the uncle of John Butler Maling, Mayor of Camberwell. He was married to Kate Conlon in 1882. They had 3 children: Silas Young, Alick and Zillah. Maling was born in c1829 in Shepreth, Cambridgeshire; he died in Surrey Hills on 9 October 1912 and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery - CE-*-0586. Mrs Kate Maling (born c1859 in Co Meath, Ireland) died at the property on 8 March 1921. She is buried in Brighton General Cemetery. Probate was valued at over 10,000 pounds and included other properties in Sandringham, Hawthorn and Macedon. At the time of her death the Surrey Hills property was described as being 23 cres with 2 brick houses, 1 cow, 2 heifers and 40 fowls or chickens. The property was subdivided after her death. The quarry was filled in after several drownings or near drownings and the land is now occupied by a park and playground maintained by the City of Boroondara. Beckett Park is sited on horizon to the left beyond the trees. This album contains cigarette cards dating from the early 20th Century. The cards include Australian and English cricketers, Australian footballers, animals, racehorses, ships, Pacific Islanders, jockeys, actors and other famous people. The cards come from a variety of Australian and English cigarette companies. The album comes from the Edwards family who lived on the MORVEN property situated about 11 kilometres west of Branxholme in the Western District of Victoria. This property was sub divided in 1911 into 25 farms. There was once a Morven School and today there is a road of that name in the area.. This album is of considerable significance as it has historical value as an early collection of cigarette cards. Collecting of cigarette cards was a major social activity amongst young people, particularly in the first half of the 20th Century. It was a profitable advertising ploy for cigarette companies. Card and small object collecting by children today is still popular and used as an advertising mechanism. This album has a worn cover in faded green and fawn colours with a blue spine almost wholly detached. The back cover is stained. The cover has text. There are eighteen double sided pages with cut spaces for holding seven cigarette cards on each. Most of the pages contain black and white, sepia or coloured cigarette cards. Railway Platform Barrier Crowd control on railway platforms was a necessity during peak times. At times it may have been necessary to direct passengers to a certain exit or from a certain entrance on a railway platform. Where able, on occasions, two trains may have to use the one platform to ensure trains depart efficiently. To ensure the public entrain on the correct train it could be necessary to divide the platform by using a platform barrier. The barriers made of wood and steel were easily moved by platform staff and provided a substantial barrier on the railway platform. When 'Bolac Plains' was subdivided in 1846 Henry Gibb took up the northern end and he named the property 'Eilyer'. 'Eilyer' was bought from the estate of Henry Gibb in 1864 by Josiah and Thomas Austin. Gibb had been killed the year before when he fell from a horse. At the time of purchase, 'Eilyer' was 30,000 acres in size. It was later divided up and the second section become known as "Myuna". The Peterborough Sandcastle competition has been running for at least 80 years. Wokka Moore was the first "Lady Mayoress", judge of the competition, who arrived with great ceremony using different means of transport over the years - always accompanied by a "Lady in Waiting". Traditionally, this was held on the Australia Day long weekend. Competition was divided into age groups, and the venue depended on whether the river was open or closed. (If it was open there is no sand on the Front Beach). Materials used could only be what was found on the beach. Currently (2021) the Sandcastle Committee is calling for photos, memorabilia and details of winners from over the years.This event has been running for a very long time , apparently uninterrupted. It is significant to the town because of its inclusive nature - there was high anticipation and planning by the children. The roles of Lady Mayoress and Lady in Waiting were keenly sought. Wokka Moore did the job for a long time then passed the baton.
