A windmill may be considered one of the most iconic sights of Australian Farming life. A pump like this rest at the heart of all such windmills, turning wind energy into water for farmers both here in Australia and worldwide alike. The water windmills access is referred to as an aquifer, an underground layer of water trapped in rocks but accessible with use of water wells and windmills. Australia is home to an underground aquifer known as the Great Artesian Basin. It is the largest and deepest aquifer in the world. Stretching over 1,700,000 square kilometres, the Basin underlies nearly a quarter of the continent including most of Queensland, the south- east corner of the Northern Territory, the north-east part of South Australia and the northern part of New South Wales. The basin is 3,000 metres deep in places and is estimated to contain 64,900 cubic kilometres of groundwater. To try and give this number context, a megalitre is a million litres. The Great Artesian Basin contains 65,000 million megalitres of water. As the Yarra became unsuitable as a source of water, several attempts were made to find alternative sources for the growing population of Melbourne. It was not until 1891 that the efforts to sewer Melbourne came to fruition with the setting up of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW), now known as Melbourne Water. The Warrnambool Fire Brigade was formed in 1863. The first fire engine house was in Liebig Street and carters were required to carry water to fire scenes. In 1889 the Council built a new Fire Station on Liebig Street and Warrnambool hosted its own Annual Demonstration in 1894. In 1891 the volunteer brigade became part of the Country Fire Brigade. The Fire Station relocated to Raglan Parade in 1915 and then to Timor Street in 1961. In 1989 the Brigade moved back to Raglan Parade. This tin came from the Sunshine Biscuit Factory in Ballarat. James Long established a confectionery business in Ballarat in 1854 and in 1921 it was known as the Sunshine Biscuit Company. In 1923 the factory was destroyed by fire and rebuilt. During World War Two 80% of the factory products went to the armed services. In 1947 the company was known as Ballarat Products Ltd and in 1962 it was called Sunshine Biscuits Ltd. In 1977 the factory was used to produce dry pet food (Friskies). The building was closed in 1991 and the site developed to include a supermarket, shops and housing. Up till about the late 1950s biscuits were mostly not packaged but sold loose by the pound in grocery stores from tins such as this. Broken biscuits were also sold at a cheaper price. Some biscuits were also sold at that time in smaller tins. This tin is of interest as an example of the tins from which biscuits were sold in the first half of the 20th century. It will be useful for display.This is a rectangular-shaped biscuit tin which is much rusted. The tin has a multi-coloured paper label that has been pasted around the sides. Much of this label has been torn away. The label shows images of biscuits. This is the 1982 Annual Report for Lyndoch Home and Hospital for the Aged, Warrnambool. It contains lists of Board Members, a President’s Report, Lyndoch’s Aims, financial reports, photographs and a list of Life Governors. Lyndoch Home for the Aged was established in 1952 and has developed with a wide range of facilities for the aged since that date. The original Lyndoch property near the mouth of the Hopkins River was owned by a Melbourne tea merchant, George Rolfe, who bought the land when there were on the site only a couple of cottages and a larger building which had been a school, Warrnambool Grammar, run by Henry Kemmis. Rolfe acquired the land in the 1870s and named the property Lyndoch after the town in the Barossa Valley where he had lived. He owned Lyndoch for 44 years and it was his stepdaughter, Florence Lake who built in the 1920s the bungalow known as Lyndoch which forms the original building of the Lyndoch Home for the Aged, Today the facility is called Lyndoch Living. This 1982 report is kept for the benefit of researchers wanting details of the history of Lyndoch over the past 30 or 40 years. This is a booklet with a plasticized cover with a white back and a multi-coloured front cover. The front cover has a photograph of a Lyndoch building. There are six double-sided pages with printed material and photographs on white paper and a yellow and orange strip across the top of the pages.
