Prior to the end of WW1 many members of the 4th Light Horse Regiment had been repatriated to Australia because of illness or wounds. These men were the originators of the Regimental Association. The original owner (Jack) was a serviceman and he created a souvenir for a loved one, using the biscuit as a frame for the photograph of presumably himself. This object is a rare and precious piece. It is rare for items composed of edible goods to remain almost perfectly intact after a century after creation. WW1 AIF Training Camp in Egypt prior to deploying to Gallipoli The photograph shows the living conditions (Tents). It also shows the vastness of the site and suggests large numbers of servicemen. These two photographs are historically significant. They demonstrate the conditions that the soldiers in training experienced before they arrived at the front-line. Suggested identity of couple via feedback, Nellie to be Nellie Alberta Thomson, daughter of Charles Augustus Thompson, daughter of Charles Augustus Thompson, a brother of Emma Nightingale. Nellie married Frederick John Parkins in 1915. Both Cashmore brothers embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Palermo on 7th May 1915, and returned to Australia in mid-1919. Nine letters by Jack and two by Arthur were sent from Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine.
