Maclean, Ports and Harbours, Melbourne, for a the period ending 30th June 1908, at the offered rate of 10/- (ten shillings) per 100.0 c/f (cubic feet). The Manager of the Warrnambool Gasworks expected to follow this acceptance with a visit to the Collector of Customs to sign the Conditions of Contract and Bond. The light of Warrnambool's Lady Bay Lighthouse was originally powered by oil. Later it was converted to gas, followed by electricity, then solar power, and finally to battery power. The Warrnambool Gas Company operated the gas works from the 1870's to the late 1920's.This document connects Warrnambool's Lady Bay Lighthouse to the Warrnambool Gas Works during the first decade of the 20th century. Lake Wendouree is often considered the soul of Ballarat according to advertisements from the early 1900's saying "Sydney may have it's Harbour, Melbourne, it's bay but Ballarat has Lake Wendouree." This may have been Mrs.Strange's favorite spot to photograph the Lake, another image in this series captures the same area in a different mood. In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. All Souls Memorial Church, located at 48 Bay Road, Sandringham, is believed to be the first reinforced concrete church in Australia. HMAS Una was a Royal Australian Navy sloop that began its life as the German motor launch Komet. The ship, and her 57 crew, was captured by an infantry detachment of the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force 9 October 1914, with no loss of life. Komet was then sailed to Sydney as a prize. During the time in which the Una was in service under Australia, the sloop was used as a Patrol and General Purpose Vessel. The sloop was used to patrol the areas of New Guinea, New Britain, New Hebrides and Malayan waters. After World War I, Una was decommissioned and taken to Port Phillip Bay, renamed Akuna and used as a pilot vessel. The architect, Edward Kilburn designed Byram in the Arts & Crafts style for the industrialist George Ramsden. Construction began in 1888 and was reputed to have lasted three years. The mansion had frontages to Studley Park Road and Stevenson Street, including gardens laid out with great taste, including pleasure grounds, tennis lawn, fruit and flower garden, and paddock.The size of many of the trees in the garden indicate that many survived from the garden of Clifton Villa, the previous single-storeyed house built on the site by the Stevenson brothers. Byram had views to Melbourne and Port Phillip Bay. The house was demolished in 1960, despite opposition from the National Trust (Victoria), and its gardens subdivided into residential allotments.An early photograph of Goathland (also known as Byram, Lowan and Tara Hall). The photo shows the front of the building during the period of Sir Malcolm McEacharn’s occupation of the house (1901-11). Edward George Kilburn, of Ellerker & Kilburn, had originally designed the house for the industrialist George Ramsden in 1888. When Sir Malcolm McEacharn purchased Byram, he was to rename it as Goathland. This has led to some confusion, as Goathland was also the name used for McEacharn’s other home in St. Kilda. The period of McEacharn’s ownership represented the high point of the mansion’s history. 'Lost Glories: a memorial to forgotten Australian buildings' was published by David Latta in 1986. It tells the story of a number of significant Australian buildings that had previously been demolished. A chapter in the book was devoted to Goathland, later known as Tara Hall. To supplement the text, he sourced photographs from a range of suppliers, chiefly the Royal Women's Hospital which had once owned Tara Hall, but had sold it in 1960. Douglas ALEXANDER (1945-1981) Born Skipton, Victoria Doug Alexander studied Ceramics at the Ballarat School of Mines. In 1968 he was employed as a thrower and designer at Bendigo Pottery leaving that position to work and travel to New Zealand. He settled at Kerri Kerri, Bay of Islands in New Zealand and operated the Red Barn Pottery. In 1970 Doug Alexander returned to Australia establishing Spring Mount Pottery at Creswick where he used local clays to produce his work. He moved to Tharwa, ACT, in 1976 and established the Cappucumbalong Pottery. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. A photo of a group of ladies in Williamstown for Operation Float in 1962. The lady second from left is Mrs Violet Allen who led the summer camps at Blamey House for many years. Operation Float was an opportunity for junior legatees to experience sailing or boating on Port Philip Bay, often organised while they were at a summer camp. Junior Legatees from the country were brought to the city for a two week summer camp, often at Blamey House in Kew, while Junior Legatees from the city were billeted with families in the country. At the time Legatee Bert Davis was CFO, and his daughter Louise was asked to help with the running of the Blamey House camp. This collection of glasses and cases was donated by Miss Connie Cruickshank. She was part of the family of Orbost's first doctor, Dr James Kerr. As the 19th Century came to a close, more and more people wore their eyeglasses everyday. A popular style of inexpensive, everyday spectacles was the pince-nez. French for "pinch nose," the pince-nez was first developed in France circa 1840 and began to be imported after the 1850s. Pince-nez have no temples, but are fit snugly on the bridge of the nose. Pince- nez could be uncomfortable to wear and broke often from falling off the nose. These items demonstrate how glasses' styles have changed over time. This dictionary belonged to John Brass, an early settler in South Warrnambool. He owned several block of land and operated a lighterage business with John Young. As a lighterman and boatman he was well-known in Warrnambool. He was drowned in March 1895 while attempting to cross a temporary foot bridge across the Merri River. His house (probably in Stanley Street) was built in 1868 and remained as an interesting example of a lighterman’s cottage until1974. The dictionary probably became the property of W. Macdonald after John Brass’ death. No information has been found on this W. Macdonald. This book is of interest as it belonged to John Brass, an important early settler in South Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book of 974 pages. The cover is green with embossed patterning and lettering on the front cover and gold lettering on the spine. The book has a Preface, a Contents page, the Dictionary entries and an Appendix. There are many illustrations, from engravings on wood, scattered throughout the text. The cloth binding is coming loose and there are several loose pages. The last page is missing. The inscriptions are written in pencil and in blue ink and there are red stamps of John Brass. The Fainter Falls Walking Track was originally accessible via a fire fighting access trail, which was used by fire-fighters putting out spot fires caused by lightening strikes. The fires in the summer of 2003, highlighted the beauty of this area and provided the residents with the opportunity to consider the redevelopment of the trail. Work to establish a 700 metre grade 2 walking trail with a 50 metre grade 3 extension trail to the Falls began in 2005. It also includes 3 observation decks, a bridge over a creek crossing, car parking and interpretative signage.The shovel was found during work on the Fainter Falls track. It was left there some time ago by a previous visitor to the Falls indicating that the Falls were accessible and attracted visitors many years ago.Rusty metal shovel head curved on each side and rounded at the front. At the back of the blade it is attached on top with 3 nails to the top piece. The top metal piece overlaps the blade by 6.5 cm longitudinally x 5 cm across. On the back the metal piece overlaps the blade by 12 cm both longitudinally and across the handle end but tapers to a point. It has 6 nails attaching it. Both metal pieces are attached to the blade and curve parallel and around so that a wooden handle would fit between them. This would have 2 nails passing through both metal pieces and the handle. Joseph Reed was born in 1875 and came to Bendigo in 1900 after gaining experience at an aerated water factory in Melbourne. He built a new factory in Long Gully in 1906. He formed a partnership with his brother in 1908. By 1911 sales of aerated water were dropping dramatically so the brothers began making tomato sauce and moved into new premises - the old Bruce Cordial Factory in Bridge Street, Bendigo. Following Joseph's death, his share of the business was taken over by his son . The Yarra Scenic Boulevard stretching from Hawthorn to the Chandler Highway was completed as a major project between 1933 and 1936 during a period of significant unemployment. Key dates in the construction this section the road include: 1933 when Kew Council supported the construction of the road from Studley Park to the Kew Asylum; and 1936 when the road from the Johnston Street Bridge to the Chandler Highway was opened. The inscription on the reverse of the photo 'Boulevard Fairfield' is misleading as there is no section of the Boulevard in Fairfield. A more likely interpretation is that it is a photograph of the Kew section of the Yarra Boulevard with the factories of Fairfield in the distance.Rare early photograph of the Yarra Boulevard, taken one year after the opening of the road. The photograph is an important historical record of the results of 'Susso' labor in the creation of major works in Melbourne by the Victorian Government. Four photographs of Sir Hubert Opperman and a Malvern Star Moulton bicycle. Bruce Small took over Malvern Star bicycles in 1920 and hired a young Hubert Opperman, meeting him after 'Oppy' won a race and the prize of a Malvern Star bike. The pair became life long friends and after Bruce joined the Association for the Blind as a board member and President, he encouraged his friend to join as well. These photographs were most likely taken for Sir Hubert joining the board. The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. The photograph shows Collins Street just to the east of Swanston St. Some 10 cable trams can be seen in the view, along with some horse-drawn vehicles and one open-top motor car. It would appear that a person is boarding the nearest cable tram (Victoria Bridge) from the centre of the road. Trees have been planted between Swanston and Spring St. In the background are signs for Ruskins Studios, W V Dunn Dentist, Kodak Limited incorporating Baker House, Coles Arcade, and Broothorn studios - see reference. Donated by artist Tamlyn Teow in 2015, the multi-textured picture portrays two figures dancing together. From the artist: "The Dancers" was an inspiration that came to me when I closed my eyes to listen to a musical track and wondered what it would be like to be blind. Then I recalled a conversation I once had with a man who was born blind and he described the city to look like "a big lake flowing in between buildings of all different shapes and colours.
