The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, 27/01/2010
Taken on the 1st of April 1928 and copied from a private collection on the 27th of January 2010 the photograph depicts three well-dressed men and a small child standing around a fountain at the back of the administration building of Beechworth's 'lunatic' Asylum The asylum was constructed between 1864 and 1867 to the designs by the Public Works Department (PWD) and was later renamed Mayday Hills Mental Asylum. The decommissioned asylum was one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in Victoria and consisted of sixty-seven buildings, one thousand two hundred patients and five hundred staff members. The asylum was one of the first asylums to focus on treatment and rehabilitation instead of institutional confinement. At the asylum, active work was considered imperative and workshops were located near the male accommodations and laundries and drying yards near the female accommodation. The asylum closed in 1995 and was sold to La Trobe University before being closed and sold again in 2011 to a private owner. This photograph is historically significant as it demonstrates the freedom and safety of those who visited the asylum while also highlighting this instutions mission to treat and rehabiliate patients instead on institutionalising them.Black and white rectangular photograph printed on photographic paperReverse: 7606-1/ Copied 27 Jan 2010/ Copied from private collection/ Inscribed on the back of original/ J.Pinfold 1-4-1929/ May Mental Hospital for the Insane. beechworth, beechworth mental asylum, beechworth lunatic asylum, beechworth mental hosptial, mayday, mayday hills, mayday hills mental asylum, administration building, fountain -

Work on paper - ink and watercolour, Annette Meikle, Band Rotunda, 1977
In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. Built in 1926, the Band Rotunda was a gift to the people of Sandringham by local doctor and former soldier Thomas Garnet Leary. On Sunday afternoons throughout the inter-war years, brass bands such as the military uniformed 46th Battalion Brass Band and the popular Sandringham Boys Band would play. The canopied top storey comfortably held twenty five performers with enough room for their large instruments. Large crowds would picnic along the foreshore listening to the performances. The drinking fountain pictured under the rotunda has since been removed.Annette Meikle, Band Rotunda 1977, ink and watercolour, 33.8 x 23.5 cm. Bayside City Council Art and Heritage Collection. Document, Borough of Kew, Borough of Kew By-Law No.45 : Alexandra Gardens, 1908
The ‘Alexandra Gardens’ in Cotham Road were designed and laid out by George and Thomas Pockett. The Governor of Victoria officially opened them in 1908. A report of the opening stated that “…the gardens have been laid out in large sloping lawns, divided by wide graveled paths, and dotted with tastefully arranged flower beds, which are now bright with autumn bloom”. The massed beds of shrubs and flowers included beds of chrysanthemums, a specialty of George Pockett, the Garden’s first curator. A large rotunda was constructed in 1910 to mark the Jubilee of Kew. A plaque memorialising the contribution of George Pockett, was attached to the original rotunda after his death in 1922. By 1911, electric lighting was installed to allow the public to access the Gardens, and the concerts that were held within them on summer nights. The Gardens were later to include the Jubilee Fountain, moved from the front of the Kew Post Office in 1925. The Kew Council commissioned the substantial bluestone entrance gates in 1933.The Kew Historical Society is fortunate that the City Engineer, Mr Poulter, donated a number of items held by the City of Kew to the Society for safekeeping, rather than identifying them for destruction. The most significant items donated included old maps, including those issued by the Board of Works. Other items included photographs of public works undertaken by the Department. The By-laws are part of that donation and tell us lots about the social values of the period. The Mayor, Councillors and Burgesses of the Borough of Kew published By-Law No.45 in 1908 to regulate the “Conduct of Persons whilst at or Within the Gardens known as the Alexandra Gardens”. The By-Law also set a charge for “Persons Using or Entering in or upon the said Gardens”. The 17 by-laws included predictable prohibitions on expectorating, using indecent language, interfering with the floral displays, or indeed with the caretaker gardeners. Other acts prohibited included a warning that “Children under the age of ten years not being under the control of some competent person may be removed from said gardens”. The Alexandra Gardens were at one stage surrounded by a picket fence. This might explain the prohibition on climbing upon or getting through over or under any fence at or within the gardens. The financial penalty for breaching the By-Law was determined as “…not exceeding Ten pounds and not less than Five shillings”. This original copy of the By-Law was donated to the Kew Historical Society by the City of Kew.alexandra gardens (cotham road, kew), city of kew -

Domestic object - Ceramic ink pen cleaner, 1900 - 1920s
Pen-wipers or pen-cleaners were invented to prolong the usefulness of their pens by keeping them clean and dry between uses. This helped to prevent rusting of the nib from water-based inks. In the 1890s and 1900s, with the rise of the fountain pen, pen-cleaners remained a popular desktop accessory, since they could still be used to wipe away the excess ink from the nib and feed of a pen, once it had been refilled in an inkwell. Pen-cleaners died out in the second half of the 1900s when people started using ballpoint pens. This wiper was used by the teacher at Upper Gundowring Primary school, Victoria. The school, number 2733, opened on 13 July 1886. Due to changing demographics in the region, in 1953 the school was merged with schools from Dederang North, Kergunyah, Gundowring, Kiewa, Red Bluff, Charleroi and Gundowing North on a 10 acre site with 11 rooms at Kiewa to become Kiewa Valley Consolidated School. This item is was donated by Mrs. Betty Barberis, a well-known artist in the Wodonga district.ThIs ceramic pen wiper/ cleaner was produced to clean and maintain the nib on an ink pen. Some Ithacans on arrival in Melbourne moved to the larger regional country towns and opened food vending businesses. John (Ioannis) Raftopoulos (Fiakas) was one such Ithacan who established himself in Mildura. He opened the Sport Cafe in Langtree Avenue. The Spot was an elegant and sophisticated establishment and as well as serving meals, also served the latest sundaes and cool fountain drinks. By the late 1930s he had also opened a milk bar in Mildura’s Astor Theatre. Raftopoulos was a true entrepreneur and ran a number of business in the Mildura and Red Cliffs. John's father, Efstathios Raftopoulos (Levendis) arrived in Australia in 1895 and John soon followed. Print - Reproduction print, Carl William Weisbrod (active 1770s) et al, Vue de la Place Publique de Cos, c. late 18th century
This is an image of a public square on the island of Kos in Greece. Kos was the home of Hippocrates, and the tree in this image is reputedly the plane tree under which Hippocrates sat as he taught his pupils medicine. Hippocrates is known as the "Father of Medicine" for his revolutionary impact on the field of medicine. The letters 'A.P.D.R' printed below the title on this artwork refer to the copyright granted to engravers in France.Black and white engraving of a market square scene on the island of Kos in Greece. A large tree dominates the scene. Below the tree sits a roofed structure with a series of small steps. Water appears to be coming out of a channel of each of the visible sides of the structure, suggesting a fountain. To the left, an array of human figures, horses and a dog sit or stand beneath the tree and on the steps of the fountain. To the right, there are shaded platforms on which people are sitting in groups. There are three dogs in front of the group sitting on a platform at bottom right. Text printed below image reads 'VUE DE LA PLACE PUBLIQUE DE COS/A.P.D.R.' Small printed text below bottom left corner of image is partly illegible, but references the original creator of the artwork, Jean-Baptiste Hilair. Small printed text below bottom right corner of image reads ' Gravé à l'eau forte par C. Weisbrod/ el terminé au burin par J. Aliamet'. Small printed text above top left hand corner of image reads 'Pl. 59.' The print has been framed in a brown wooden frame with gold trim. An old display label is affixed to the back of the object. A card from Professor Franco Crainz is affixed to the back of the object, thanking the unnamed receiver for a reprint of their "interesting paper on D.D.Davis' Obstetric Atlas". The front of the card carries a print of the Temple of Esculapia, located in the Villa Borghese in Rome. A wire and two hooks have been attached to the rear of the work for hanging. -
