Container - Presentation Jewellery Box, 1948
In 1948, the citizens of Kew presented this jewellery box to the outgoing Mayor and Mayoress of Kew, Cr & Mrs W D Vaughan. In 2021, it returned to Kew, thanks to the generous donations of our Friends of the Collection. William David Vaughan to whom the jewel box was presented in 1948 was a publisher, politician and historian, born in 1897 at Heathcote. By 1922, he had become a publisher and Secretary of Victorian Newspapers Ltd. In October 1922, he married Muriel Gladys Frazer in Bendigo. He purchased 'Elsfield' in Cotham Road, renamed it 'Carramar', and resided there for almost fifty years. His wife, the Mayoress, was an accomplished pianist and entertained the wives of councillors and supported many charitable works from her home. In 1926, Vaughan founded a local newspaper, the Kew Advertiser. During his second term as Mayor, he was elected president of Melbourne Suburban Newspapers’ Association, In April 1947, he was appointed to and later became chairman of the Free Library Services Board. In 1960, he published his history of Kew - 'Kew's Civic Century'. Vaughan’s third term as Mayor in 1962-63 saw the erection of the pavilion at Victoria Park and the final clean-up of the Outer Circle Railway. He died in September 1976. This inlaid and engraved jewellery box was part of a larger donation made to the Mayor and Mayoress of Kew in 1948 by the citizens of the municipality. It is the only 'civic award' in the collection given to a former civic leader and complements the large collection of civic portraits in the collection. The box is additionally significant because of its association with William David Vaughan - newspaper proprietor, local politician, and local historian. Newspaper, The Sun News Pictorial, 18 August 1930, 1930
This newspaper was found under the floor during works on Town Hall in Caulfield. It was published in the same year (1930) that the portico was added to the Town Hall. The newspaper publication month coincides with the commencement of works in August 1930. It is possible that this object was deliberately placed underneath the floor at the time. The Sun News Pictorial was established in 1922 and published Monday to Saturday.Copy of The Sun News Pictorial, 18 August 1930. Pages are numbered to 36, but only 24 pages intact. Missing inserts. -

Container - Object, Donation tin - round RVIB circa 1980's, 1980s
Coin collections have a long and varied history. Coins were often collected in churches in a box located near the entrance/exit, and later via a collection plate that was passed amongst the congregation Funds were used to repair the church or feed the poorest of the parish. The donation of coins is and was considered part of religious life and mentioned in Christian, Jewish and Islamic texts. With the need and expansion of charitable works occurring outside religious life, charity boxes began to spread into hospitals, orphanages and asylums. The need for non-fixed boxes grew with the rise in charities and their activities outside a fixed building. Collection boxes could be large (and therefore hard to move) or could be held by individuals acting as collection agents, working at a specific location, moving between dwellings or at events. In this example, the RVIB tin could be used gathering coins at events such as Carols by Candlelight, White Cane day or other special marketing days.1 metal coin collection tin with handle and paper wrapYour Donation Supports the Work of The Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind RVIB lighthouse logo 557 St Kilda Road, Melbourne, Telephone 9529 3544royal victorian institute for the blind, equipment -

This was the home of 3 generations of the Coop family: 1. Josephine and George Frank Coop (noted in Box Hill Rate Books for 1947-1954). 2. George Burton Coop (1906-1960) and his family. He was Assistant Chief Architect of Victoria in the Public Works Department (P.W.D.) George Burton Coop was born in c1906 in Williamstown, the son of Josephine Vistarini and George Frank Coop. He married Winifred Alice Trewartha in 1936 and they are listed in the electoral rolls at 688 Whitehorse Road in 1937. George died 3/4/1960, aged 54 years at Mont Albert. 3. George Burton and Alice Coop had 2 children: George Lister Coop - born St Georges Hospital, 8/10/1937 Alison - born c1945. The donor George Lister Coop informed that he initially attended Chatham State School because his first home was the Spanish Mission style flats at 346 Whitehorse Road, opposite Brenbeal Street, Balwyn. When his grandparents died, the family moved to 688 Whitehorse Road and he then attended Mont Albert Central School. The California bungalow style of housing was the dominant style of housing built in the interwar period through the northern parts of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert as formerly semi-rural land was subdivided for new housing. It was relatively inexpensive and affordable. In Australia the Californian bungalow drew upon elements that were popular across the United States from around 1910 to 1939. In Australia the style became popular from 1913. In Melbourne both timber and red brick were used as the main building material. Typically they are one or one and a half story houses and feature sloping roofs and eaves with unenclosed rafters and often a feature a dormer window (or an attic vent designed to look like one) over the main portion of the house. Decorative elements include wood shingles, part stucco rendered exteriors, brick, stone, rendered or a combination of these treatments to exterior chimneys and front porches supported by heavy timber, brick or stucco columns.A black & white photo taken at an angle of a Californian bungalow.californian bungalow, whitehorse road, george frank coop, (miss) josephine vistarini, (mrs) josephine coop, george burton coop, (miss) winifred trewartha, (mrs) winifred coop, george lister coop, alison coop -

The donor George Lister Coop was about 21 years of age when he took this photo in 1958. This photo is of Annesley Home for the Aged at 692-694 Whitehorse Road. It was originally a Methodist, later a Uniting Church facility. The new sections in the photo was part of an extension built in 1958. A further extension encompassing 21 beds occurred in 1971. A Queen Anne / Edwardian brick attic home was built on No 694 in 1908 for William Pilkington, a manufacturer and was called 'St Martins'. Ownership stayed in this family until c1950. It was retained as part of the facility. Alan Holt's register of 3127 properties list 34 residents in 1980, of which all but 3 were female. The property was replaced by apartments in c2018 but had ceased function as a nursing home quite a number of years prior to this and in the interim appeared to be used for temporary accommodation. Plan, Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works : Borough of Kew : Detail Plan No.1291, 1905
The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) plans were produced from the 1890s to the 1950s. They were crucial to the design and development of Melbourne's sewerage and drainage system. The plans, at a scale of 40 feet to 1 inch (1:480), provide a detailed historical record of Melbourne streetscapes and environmental features. Each plan covers one or two street blocks (roughly six streets), showing details of buildings, including garden layouts and ownership boundaries, and features such as laneways, drains, bridges, parks, municipal boundaries and other prominent landmarks as they existed at the time each plan was produced. (Source: State Library of Victoria). This plan forms part of a large group of MMBW plans and maps that was donated to the Society by the Mr Poulter, City Engineer of the City of Kew in 1989. Within this collection, thirty-five hand-coloured plans, backed with linen, are of statewide significance as they include annotations that provide details of construction materials used in buildings in the first decade of the 20th century as well as additional information about land ownership and usage. The copies in the Public Record Office Victoria and the State Library of Victoria are monochrome versions which do not denote building materials so that the maps in this collection are invaluable and unique tools for researchers and heritage consultants. A number of the plans are not held in the collection of the State Library of Victoria so they have the additional attribute of rarity.Original survey plan, issued by the MMBW to a contractor with responsibility for constructing sewers in the area identified on the plan within the Borough of Kew. The plan was at some stage hand-coloured, possibly by the contractor, but more likely by officers working in the Engineering Department of the Borough and later Town, then City of Kew. The hand-coloured sections of buildings on the plan were used to denote masonry or brick constructions (pink), weatherboard constructions (yellow), and public buildings (grey). A detail plan of part of Studley Park bordered by the major streets of Hodgson Street, Stevenson Street and Studley Park Road. Included on the plan are a number of significant Studley Park mansions in existence at the beginning of the 20th century. The unnamed street shown in the middle of the plan is McEvoy Street. The most important house still extant is Campion House, formerly named Dalsraith [Dalswraith] and Glendalough, owned since the 1940s by the Society of Jesus. Campion House can be seen on the corner of Hodgson and Studley Park Road. Its stables at the rear of the block have now been incorporated into a contemporary residence. An interesting feature of the plan is the 1910 annotation by Ed Seitz, professional designing engineer. MMBW plans were amended over time to take account of new subdivisions such as that which created Merrion Place. Of the four mansions shown in Studley Park Road, three remain – ‘Field Place’, the home of Frances Henty, ‘Leaghur’ and ‘Darley’. ‘Byram’ (later ‘Goathland’, then ‘Tara Hall’) was an architectural marvel. Designed in 1888 by E.G. Kilburn for the paper magnate George Ramsden, it was demolished in 1960. While an earlier sale of the southern section of Byram had created Tara Avenue in 1927, the demolition of the house in 1960 enabled the extension of Tara Avenue northward.melbourne and metropolitan board of works, detail plans, mmbw 1294, mmbw 1295, cartography -

Plan, Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works : Borough of Kew : Detail Plan No.1296, 1904
The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) plans were produced from the 1890s to the 1950s. (Source: State Library of Victoria)This plan forms part of a large group of MMBW plans and maps that was donated to the Society by the Mr Poulter, City Engineer of the City of Kew in 1989. This area was once known as O’Shaughnessy’s Paddock. O’Shaughnessy was the licensee of the Kew Hotel. The ‘Paddock’ or farm was for many years the closest farm to Melbourne. By 1903, when this plan was surveyed and lithographed, little of the farm remained. The area is dominated by a ‘clay hole’, on the site of the current Foley Reserve. It was used by Smart’s Brickyard from the 1880s until 1911, when the Council purchased it for a rubbish dump. It is notable as the site is one of the few industrial operations to have existed in Kew. By 1903, urban development was characterised by larger houses fronting Barkers Road and brick and weatherboard villas in Foley Street. Nearer the pit, weatherboard houses predominated. Foley Street bisected the triangular block and continued right to Denmark Street. At this stage, a house impeded the through road, only allowing access via a right of way to High Street.melbourne and metropolitan board of works, detail plans, mmbw 1296, cartography -

The hand-coloured sections of buildings on the plan were used to denote masonry or brick constructions (pink), weatherboard constructions (yellow), and public buildings (grey). Throughout its history, the land in what is known today as Studley Ward of the City of Boroondara has been subject to continuing subdivision. This is evident in Plan 1301, where later hands have modified the original map to include streets created subsequent to the printing of the plan in 1904. Other annotations such as the ‘Reserved for Road Purposes’ beside the Yarra never eventuated. The plan continued to be modified to at least 1953, when a later hand noted that a particular site was ‘Property site P. McIntyre house’ in Swinton Avenue. Two significant houses in the area are outlined on the plan: ‘Swinton’ on the corner of the streets then named Effey and Maud Streets (now Swinton Avenue) and ‘Fairhaven’ [unnamed] in Stevenson Street. The gardens of the two David Syme owned mansions of ‘Blythswood’ and ‘Rockingham’, stretching down to the River Yarra, are also represented.melbourne and metropolitan board of works, detail plans, mmbw 1301, cartography -

The absence of buildings and or property in Kew facing the Yarra is the most notable feature of this plan. Walmer Street and its bridge stretched, then and now, from Studley Park Road to Victoria Street, Richmond. On the Richmond side of the Yarra, there was evidence in 1904 of industry (‘Wool shed’; Soap Works’) and entertainment (‘Skittle Alley’). In reality, another Plan (No.1303) shows Chinese Gardens bordering the Yarra on the Kew side and buildings in Young Street.melbourne and metropolitan board of works, detail plans, mmbw 1302, cartography -

The two houses between Raheen and the River Yarra are also shown. Other parts of the plan show neighbouring streets: Yarra Street, Studley Park Avenue, Studley Street and Fenwick Street. Each, apart from Fenwick Street was subsequently renamed. At the corner of Fenwick and Stawell Streets, the home of Joseph Butterworth Coombs, later called ‘Hope Mansell’, is represented but unnamed.melbourne and metropolitan board of works, detail plans, mmbw 1350, cartography -
