This is the program for the exhibitions and activities conducted by the Art Gallery of Ballarat in the winter of 2015. It includes the exhibition of the works of James Meek, of particular interest to Warrnambool as Meek was resident there for a number of years in the 19th century. The Ballarat Art Gallery is the largest and oldest regional art gallery in Australia, being established in 1884. The booklet is of interest as it shows the depth and variety of exhibitions and activities held at a regional art gallery. It includes the exhibition of the works of James Meek, a 19th resident of Warrnambool where he was well-known as a fishing company operator, a punt operator, a fisherman, a writer and lecturer and a gold prospector in the Otway Ranges. His calligraphy works are of great interest, both artistically and historically and one of his works belonging to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society was loaned to Ballarat for this exhibition. This is a booklet of 32 pages containing the program of the Art Gallery of Ballarat for Winter 2015. It contains logos of sponsors, a floor plan of the gallery, black and white and colour photographs and sketches and printed material on each exhibition. "Crossing the line" ceremonies were routinely conducted when a crew member made their first crossing of the equator. This photograph depicts aspects of that ceremony and, as Allan Charles Quinn is the photographer, it is obviously not his first crossing. Churchill Island has a large photographic collection dating from the nineteenth century. This series shows the extensive work and volunteering conducted on site by workers after it was turned into a heritage site. Came into donor's possession some time ago. When the band was due to sale for the UK , the treasurer absconded with all the monies and the tour was cancelled. Hence the unused letter. Subsequently, William Partington conducted bands Australia- wide. He played the euphonium excellently. Donor is the niece of William Partington Letter from Dame Nellie Melba whilst in Sydney to Sir Daniel Godfrey, Bandmaster in England. This was to introduce the donor's uncle , William Partington, who was conductor of the Australian Imperial Band. Letter handwritten in black ink on cream peper. William Watts arrived in Bacchus Marsh in 1862 and for many years conducted a boot and shoe makers business in Main Street. This building, known as ‘Kentbury’ was built about 1858, and was formerly the premises of Bastings, cordwainer. The premises were enlarged in 1876 and occupied by Weaver. The building was demolished c.1960. Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Military training was never without danger especially when weapons were handled. Risks were assessed during planning and measures taken to minimise hazards. On one occasion the Conducting Officer was injured by a grenade fragment during throwing practice. Probably used in late 19th century/early 20th century by the Independent Order of Rechabites. Box found with other I.O.R memorabilia in cellar of Doll Museum at Ballarat.Dark, varnished wooden box used in conduct of ballots. Box has two round holes in top and a lockable drawer (key in it) which slides out to the side. Two funnel-shaped wooden pieces (one dark, one a lighter colour) fit into the holes at the top of box and the drawer is divided into two sections. Black and white glass voting tokens are inside box. This letter describes a business transaction of an item essential to conducting a mill in the days of the pioneers. The horse was purchased from Francis Jones at Grasmere some 45 kilometres distant. Francis Jones and descendants were closely associated with the settlement of Grasmere (district) and 'The Union', a well-known pastoral property still in existence today.The conduct of business in the 19th century could be slow and arduous. Horses were an essential component of business and communication. Their labour was pivotal to success and so their physical soundness (or otherwise) was vital. The horse trade was open to manipulation by the unscrupulous, selling unfit animals. Veterinary care and treatment was primitive, so a buyer could not be confident of a positive result, despite (as in this case) Jones' assurances of the triviality of the injury and Knights' capabilities. This photo album depicts a small period of time during 1919, and highlights some of the anaesthetic work conducted by Dr Rupert Hornabrook. There is no record as to the reason for the construction of the album, but it appears to offer insight into his work the Dental School, as well as experimentation with different types of anaesthetic agents, using himself as a test subject.Rupert Hornabrook was an early full-time anaesthetist in Australia. He helped to develop anaesthesia into a specialised field of medicine by conducting research into the way anaesthesia worked, and its effects on the body. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church was designed by the architect William Wardell. Prior to the construction of the church, mass was conducted at the Daniel Home 'Narbonne'. The foundation stone was laid on 13/11/1804 by the Catholic Bishop of Melbourne, Rev. Dr. J. Goold and the church opened in 1875 with later additions erected in 1890.A coloured photograph of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
