Photo depicts the interior of the Strachan, Murray & Shannon Limited wool store in Geelong after a record price was reached for the wool shown. This occurred on 24 November, 1920. This photograph was owned by the donor's father, Mr Cyril Cameron. Mr Cyril Cameron came from the family property 'Burnside' near Glenthompson in the Western District. He joined Strachan & Co. as an office boy in Aug. 1914 and then joined the 8th Battalion, 1st AIF in January 1915. He returned to Australia in early 1920 and started work at Strachan's again. He did the wool classing course (one year, evening?) at the Gordon in 1920-21. He became Head Wool Valuer at Strachan's in 1938 and retired in 1970. His office at Strachan's was on the top floor, directly overlooking what is now the entrance to the National Wool Museum (formerly Dennys Lascelles woolstore). He died in 1983. This photo was originally framed together with another similar photo (3122) and a document (3123) detailing the wool sale and prices under the title "Record Sale 24 November 1920". The two photos focus on lot 372, one looking to the north and the other to the west. The donors advised that it was purchased in England in 1934 by one of the parents (not advised) and then brought out to Australia when the immigrated. It was used by them in the eastern suburbs when the did not have electricity or gas. They later moved to the Dandenongs and again had to use it for cooking.Unit consists of a base with three large adjustable kerosene burners under a grid on which pots and pans were placed. At the right hand end is a round metal enclosure in which is enclosed a large glass bottle with a special top. Bottle is filled with kerosene (Royal Daylight Oil) and inverted. Kerosene then flows from container to burners. Flow is controlled by the adjustable needle jet for each burner.|OVEN is separate and has open frame of holes at bottom. It is placed over one of the burners. Heat of the oven is therefore controlled by adjusting the heat of the burner underneath.|There is a spare burner, trays etc and some spare parts in the oven. Hand operated washing machine - plunger type - a central cone plunger attached to a fulcrum point (adjustable in height) on side with a long arm. Depth of plunger action also adjustable. All mounted on a three leg frame. Container is slightly coned shaped at bottom and has a drain tap at bottom for emptying water. Container can also be lifted off. Provision made for attachment of a wringer (this could be a later modification). Plunger is approx 37cm in diameter and has four 1.5cm holes for water to be forced through. Two invoices to Robin Boyd for the windowalls and additional door frames at 290 Walsh Street. The three windowwall items are drawn with specifications. In 1952-53, Robin Boyd designed the Stegbar ‘Windowall’ - a prefabricated, structural framing/glazing system - to create a wall of windows. These ‘Windowalls’ were used extensively in domestic architecture across Australia from the 1950s to the 1970s. Boyd also designed the factory and showrooms for Stegbar Limited. The practice of wearing emu plumes in hats began with the Queensland Mounted Infantry. It is thought to have begun when the unit was engaged in suppression of the Shearers’ Strike of 1891. It remained a Queensland tradition till 1915 when other AIF units of the Light Horse began to do the same. After some dispute and discussion, the practice was approved provided the soldiers paid for their own plumes. Some regiments did not take up plumes: 6th and 7th LH continued to wear wallaby fur puggarees; 4th LH refused plumes because of the association with anti-unionism. The post-war militia adopted plumes and today all Royal Australian Armoured Corps (RAAC) regiments wear emu plumes in slouch hats. In the 1950s 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles and some other RAAC regiments wore an emu plume tuft behind the regimental badge on black berets.
