Clothing. Owners initials prominent on outside. Rectangular in shape, fine grained black leather. The leather forms an external shape, white inside a smaller watermark, black silk pouch has a silver frame and clasp to hold the required items. This is lined with a dark cream watermark silk, and has an outer section with side pocket, containing a mirror, and a smaller inner section divided into purse-like compartments. Each swection has a silver frame and clasp. A small piece of light card -red on one side, and possibly glued as a label on the otherside is the same shape as the handbag, and has printed in capital letters ''NOTE THE POINTS''. This may or may not relate to the bag. The outer leather section is slightly tapered-wider at the bottom, forming slight peaks. The top reflects these peaks, with a 3 cm wide band of leather, shaped wider at the top. 23 cm long at top, 21 cm long at lower edge. Silver metal, upper-case lettering:M-A-B, indicate the owners initials. .7 cm high, 7cm long. Two 1 cm wide, 28 cm long handles complete this stylish bag. This is one of a collection of items associated with Dr Felix Henry Meyer (1858-1937). Meyer was a very prominent early obstetrician and doctor, playing a part in the establishment of the role of the chair of obstetrics at the University of Melbourne in 1929. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.Surgical tool consisting of four metal prongs, extending from a frame in the rough shape of a pointed oval. Chrome plated metal "L" shaped tongue depressor. The depressor arm downside has cross-hatched grooves to facilitate adherence to the tong. A small metal tube is attached to the upper-side of the depressor through which anaesthesia or oxygen could be administered. The lateral arm handle has grips engraved to attach the mouth gag frame which is missing. This item has a stamp inscription on its handle about maker's details, size and material. Black spots of dust are present inside the metal tube and out near the extreme of the tube. It has accumulated dust between the cross-hatched grooves. Operation Hammersley , 10 February until 9 March 1970, was undertaken by a combined force of: C Company, 8th Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (8RAR); armoured personnel carriers from 3 Cavalry Regiment; tanks from 1 Armoured Regiment; sappers from the Royal Australian Engineers; a mortar section from 8RAR’s Support Company; air support, and even a Navy destroyer off-shore to provide gunfire support. The operation aimed to protect 17 Construction Squadron, Royal Australian Engineers, at a quarry in the western foothills of the Long Hai hills. The Long Hai hills were a stronghold for the Viet Cong, who used the caves there as a bunker complex and had planted many landmines and booby traps in the area. Over two fierce weeks, 8 RAR carried out patrols and conducted ambushes, engaging VC troops and eventually capturing the bunker system. However, it was a costly campaign. In total, over 70 Australians were killed or wounded during the operation. The worst day for mine casualties in Australia's war in Vietnam occurred on 28 February 1970. It became known as 'Black Saturday". Nine members of 8RAR were killed and 29 wounded. This item is the Order of Service from the memorial service held at Nui Dat on 3 April 1970 to honour those killed at Long Hai. It was issued to the donor, National Serviceman G G Ravenscroft, who was serving in 1 Platoon, A Company 8RAR during Operation Hammersley, and received a minor shrapnel wound on Black Saturday.Two typed A-4 pages that have been folded into booklet, now flattened and framed. Collection of personal effects that belonged to Private SIdney Spencer Plum, 3431 1st Pioneer Battalion. SIdney was born on 3/1/1894 at Dockers Plains via Wangaratta. He attended both North Wangaratta and Dockers Plains schools. He was a Blacksmith aged 21 years when he enlisted on 12/6/1915 and embarked on 11/10/1915 on board HMAT Nestor. He was wounded three times and was discharged from the AIF on 16/3/1919. This Honour Shield was the work of the school Sloyd pupils and Head Teacher. The honour book written by the Head Teacher Mr Thomas Kidman contains the names of 14 past students of Docker's Plains Primary School who served during the First World War. Handwritten summary of service pertaining to each past student including Nurse Alice M BYRNE who served in Egypt and France.Honour Board in the shape of a shield and carved from timber originally made by the Sloyd students and head teacher of Docker's Plains State School in 1921. The Honour Board centrally houses a casket with glass door containing a velvet covered book containing the names of 14 past students who served during World War 1. When the school closed in the 1940's resident were invited the take items and William Richardson, brother of Private Leslie George Richardson who died in June 1916 from meningitis prior to embarkation, chose the shield and framed photograph collection which his mother contributed to. A framed collection of their photographs was donated by Mrs. J.B. Richardson. These were unveiled in a special ceremony at the school on the 17th October 1921. Also in 1921 an Avenue of Honour of gum trees was planted by schoolchildren and residents, along both sides of the Boorahaman road in front of the school. I do not know the exact date most of these trees remain. When the school was closed in 1949, local residents were invited to remove what ever they fancied, so Mr W.B. Richardson chose the two above mentioned items. After the death of both parents - last one in 1977 - Clarice Tobias and her Husband Jim took care of the shield and the photo`s. During 2002 the photo`s were presented to Wangaratta R.S.L. Sub/Branch,Timber frame with ornate edging containing 12 oval framed photographs of men in uniform with writing above and below. Maureen Margaret CUSSEN was born in Tatura on the 10 October 1945 and died on the 10 November 1999. Is buried in Tatura. Dr Carl von Brandenstein was born in 1909 in Hanover, Germany. He studied oriental languages and the history of religion at Berlin University (1928-1934) and Leipzig (1938-1939). His doctoral thesis was a dissertation on the iconography of Hittite gods. He was arrested in Persia in 1941 and sent to Australia where he was interned at Loveday Camp South Australia and in Camp 1 Tatura from January 1945 until his release in August 1946.Four artworks in a dark wood frame with terracotta coloured matte. Discovered in 2003 when owner, Ken Gray, of Tatura, noticed the covering paper peeling away on the wall of a galvanised iron shed on his property. He believed the shed was bought at the internment camp 4 auction conducted by the Commonwealth Government in the early 1950's and transported to the property which he now owns.Cartoon like painting depicting men (army garrison soldiers) playing billiards. Captain Robert Ure Bain was Adjutant to Lt. Col. Bush, POW Group Commandant from 1942 - 1947. He was chosen to be one of the Australian Army officers who escorted the German POW's back to Germany in January 1947. A German POW and former member of the Afrika Korps made the item and donated it to Robert.Afrika Korps banners, embroidered, one piece of material. Large hemmed square of white/ cream cotton material embroidered with two unfinished Afrika Korps banners. Line drawn around both, to indicate edge/cutting point/unfinished embroidery point. The photograph show banner 1 which has a palm tree & swastika (emblem of the Afrika Korps). Swastika has been left outlined in pencil but not embroidered, probably so as not to create trouble by displaying the now banned swastika: Banner 2 has red stylised German eagle over the number 8.
