Frederick Gardner DAVEY was born in Bendigo & worked at Hume & Iser prior to enlisting. He initially enlisted as No V24918 in the 17th Machine Gun Regt in 1939 aged 22. Fred was discharged from the Army with the rank of Sgt in 10.9.1941. He then applied to join the RAAF & was finally accepted & began his service on 30.1.1942 No 410533. Finally he was posted to No 44 Sqd RAF Rhodesian which were Lancasters on 16.3.1944, so named because 25% of the aircrew & ground staff were from Rhodesia. Fred flew on the Nuremberg Raid on 30/31.3.1944 which suffered the costliest in terms of RAF losses in a single night. A total of 779 aircraft were on the raid & 105 aircraft were lost with 534 crew & 157 captured. His Sqd during the war had the 3rd highest losses in Bomber Command. Fred flew 35 missions in total & was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1944. He was presented with his DFC at an investure at Buckingham Palace on 18.5.1945. GEORGE VICTOR LANSELL is the longest serving President of the Bendigo RSL 1925 - 1952 and then 1954 - 57. He was awarded Life Membership and Life Membership with Gold Badge in 1956. This photo was originally hanging in the Billiard Room SMI. It was moved to the Foyer post 2000 to be with a plaque Cat No 8013. After the renovations to SMI 2016 -18 it was then placed in what is now called the "Building and RSL History Room". This is not the original photo that was placed in 1926. George Victor Lansell had prior service in the 67th Militia BN before WW1. He enlisted in the AIF with A Coy 38th Bn on 1.5.1916 age 32 years 7 months. He was appointed Coy Commander of A Coy. Embark for England 20.6.1916, hospital 19.8.1916 with Influenza, rejoin unit 25.8.1916, embark for France 22.11.1916, WIA 1.12.1916 grazed by a bullet to right forehead, suffering from concussion and other complications he was returned to Australia on 12.5.1917 and discharged from the AIF on 11.8.1917. He enlisted in the AIF with the rank of Major as 2IC in the 38th Bn on 1.5.1916 at the age of 41 years. Embarked for England 20.6.1916, embark for France 22.11.1916, promoted to Lt Col to command the 39th Bn 15.2.1917, hospital 17.9.1917 with Defective vision, appears to a have rejoined his unit same day, WIA 29.3.1918 GSW to left thumb, rejoin unit 13.6.1918, KIA 29.9.1918 near Bony on the Hindenburg Line. Buried by the Rev W.A.Moore on 1.10.1918. He was awarded the DSO 18.1.1918 and Mentioned in Despatches 25.5.1918.
