Clothing. Fine white cotton lawn nightgown. Round neck, with back opening. 12 cm deep yoke, and tiny cap sleeves of embroidered cotton. A V shaped panel of embroidered cotton at the centre front of the yoke. A drawstring in a casing fastens at the back neckline. A tiny .75 cm button, fastens the back yoke. Nightgown is machine stitched, with some hand stitched decorative stitching. The long skirt has two bands of narrow tucks-one tuck of 1.04 cm and six bands of .04 cm. This is edged with a band of hand stitched embroidery. This band of tucking is repeated, and edged with a 6 cm wide band of eyelet embroidery. This panel is repeated with the lower edge of embroidered cotton finished with a scalloped shaped edge. A scalloped braid edges the neckline. Item belonging to Lieutenant Albert John CRUISE born 13/4/1883 at Nathalia in Victoria. Educated at Geelong College. Enlisted in NSW on 29/8/1914 as Private No 86 1st Battalion. Promoted to L/cpl on 25/7/1915 then Lieutenant on 9/11/1915. He was nominated and appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire - Military Division for conspicuous services rendered as follows:- 'During the period 16-19 September to 11th November 1918 this officer has shown conspicuous devotion to duty and great gallantry in the performance of that duty. He has organised salvage parties and was instrumental during the advance in September in making German Dumps of HE material available for use in forward positions thus saving time and transport. His work throughout has been characterised by marked individuality and courage in the forward area and has been productive of far reaching results. He served at Gallipoli and the Western Front. Due to pneumonia and enteric he returned to Australia in early 1916 to recuperate and married before returning in August 1916. In September 1919 he returned to Australia on board HMAT Takadaussie (refer item 363) and discharged on 7/11/1919. He later served full time with the CMF from 15/5/1940 - 17/10/1943. He died in 1952 Insufficient detail to positively identify Lieutenant Peters - possibly Captain Gordon Peters DSO born 5/7/1894 Adelaide South Australia. This dress was hand crocheted by Miss Muriel 'Dolly' Williamson, who was noted for her skill at handicrafts and her sense of fashion. Throughout her life she hand made many of her own clothes and enjoyed wearing them to local social events. She had a large collection of hand knitted and crocheted clothes, most of which were dispersed amongst her friends when she finally went into a nursing home. The donation of this dress was facilitated by Ms Julia Fry from Community Options Barwon who is Miss Williamson's case worker. This dress is typical of the style of the 1960s, with its bright colours and long line. This jacket is part of a winter mess dress uniform belonging to Bernard Farley during service with the Australian Airforce. Worn in 1978, this jacket style was first developed in the 1950s and continues to be worn as mess uniform in the present day.This item has aesthetic significance and is a representative example of uniform design from the 1950s to present day. This item has clear provenance, having been donated by RSL member and Secretary (2019), Bernard Farley after its use during Bernard’s service in the Airforce. Light and dark grey fabric with small geometric patterns. Empire line dress with long sleeves. The bodice has two panels with diagonal pleating to shape the bust line. There are two pleated pieces at the shoulders with three pleats (12cm) into which raglan sleeves are attached. The front RHS panel crosses over the left to form a V neck line. The back has a high round neck line and plain back with two darts from the waist. The long sleeves taper to the waist with a top seam. Two small pleats gather the fabric at the top of the wrist/sleeve. The skirt is made up of nine pieces -a front slightly flared panel with 2 gored panels on either side. The back is made up of four gored panels. From the level of the waist, the skirt is lined with stiffened paper like lining. From the waist to the under bodice seam it is not lined.
