In 1983, the National Trust advised the Shire of Eltham that it was investigating a number of trees within the shire which had been nominated for recording the Register of Significant Trees of Victoria. The trees involved were described in the Shire of Eltham Historical Society Newsletter No. 29, March 1983 as follows:- 1. Eucalyptus melliadora (Yellow box) . a) An outstanding mature specimen 42 metres high in Laughing Waters Road, Eltham. b) Another mature specimen in Arthurs Creek road, Hurstbridge is reported to be the tree under which the bushranger Robert Bourke was tied after he shot and killed Henry Hurst in 1866 . 2. Quercus robur (English Oak). a) "Donaldson's Oak", Donaldsons Road, Kangaroo Ground was planted by John Donaldson from seed collected from Windsor Great Park in 1878. b) "Wippells Oak". This now misshapen tree is located on the St. Andrews Road near the Kangaroo Ground Fire Station. Its origins may have been similar to Donaldson's Oak, and as a young tree it apparently slipped from higher up the hill during wet weather. Both oaks are of local historical importance. 3. Eucalyptus globulus (Blue Gum). A large mature specimen at the corner of the Kangaroo Ground-St. Andrews Road and Bakehouse Road, Panton Hill. 4. Plantanas acerifolia (Plane tree) A number of trees forming the Avenue of Honour to Eltham's First World War soldiers along Main Road between Dalton and Pitt Streets, Eltham. 5. Pinus canariensis (Canary Island Pine), Pinus pinea, (Stone pine) and Cedras altlantica, (Cedar) These trees are located at the Hurst family graves in the grounds of the Hurstbridge Pre-school Centre. In 1991 the Shire of Eltham introduced controls into its planning scheme to protect sites of architectural, historic or conservation interest and significant trees. The controls were approved by the Minister for Planning and Housing. As advised in the Shire of Eltham Historical Society Newsletter No. 78, May 1991, a planning permit is required to demolish or alter any listed building or to destroy, lop or remove any listed tree. Provision is made for comments to be obtained from the National Trust or Historic Buildings Council in considering any applications. In 1993 work by Council Parks and Environment staff and volunteers resulted in the preparation of a Significant Tree Register listing forty-one trees or groups of trees. According to Shire of Eltham Historical Society Newsletter No. 91, March 1993, a similar number remained to be assessed for inclusion in the register. There is a wide range of indigenous and planted trees on private and public land and extending through the Shire of Eltham from Lower Plenty to Kinglake. Most can be viewed from publicly accessible locations. The Significant Tree Register lists 41 trees or groups of trees throughout the Shire. It contains a wide range of naturally occurring and planted trees. They have been assessed according to eleven criteria including size, age, rarity, historical value and the like. The list includes large old Red Gums at Lower Plenty, historic Oaks at Kangaroo Ground and Mountain Ash at Kinglake. The register includes a set of slides showing each tree. Garry Bartlett of the Council's Parks and Environment Section and Faye Shepherd were extensively involved in establishment of the register (Newsletter No. 93, November 1993). In 1999 Niliumbik planners prepared an amendment to the Planning Scheme to provide protection for approximately 200 of the places listed in the heritage studies and also in the Significant Tree Register commenced by the Eltham Council (Eltham District Historical Society Newsletter No. 127, July 1999. In 2004, The Register of Significant Trees was presented to the Eltham District Historical Society by Nillumbik Shire Council as part of a wider collection of of its memorabilia of the former Eltham Shire Council (EDHS Newsletter No. 159, July 2004. Album of loose handmade paper sheets contained within a handmade slip cover constructed of handcrafted card with encapsulated flora material (flowers, vines, ferns) and tinted. Each page also contains an embedded/adhered fern leaf also tinted with lacqueur or similar, text as appropriate in ink by hand calligraphy. Each page also has a white protective sheet cut to size and adhered to back surface with sticky tape and folded over face of page. Pages variously have photographs and coloured masks adhered with a gum resin. Over time much of this resin has let go and photos/masks have been reattached using acid free archival safe adhesive. 15 pages 41 x 29 cm inclusive of 3 blank pages. This album contains photographs from a variety of sources in Scotland, England, and Australia. The date range of the photographers ranges from around 1847 to 1900. There are photos of families and individuals and some are obviously linked. This album has historic and social significance in that it appears to be a collection of family photographs which link areas of Scotland with the coming of early settlers to Australia and in some photos obviously to Warrnambool. Tait collection: item 41 of 62 This document gives the details of the Will and Probate of Henry Phillips who died in Warrnambool in 1895 at the age of 55. He came to Australia from England in 1861 and established a hay and corn store in Liebig Street, Warrnambool. He was a prominent member of the Congregational Church and lived at ‘Ilfracombe’ in Lava Street. He and his wife Emma had eight children, two of whom had businesses in Warrnambool. Henry Phillips left personal estate to the value of £521 and the beneficiaries were his wife, Emma and their children. This document came into the possession of a Warrnambool lawyer, Ernest Chambers and passed down to successive lawyers occupying legal premises in Kepler Street. The document was located in this building in 2014 in the former premises of the law firm of Mackay Taylor. This document is of considerable importance as it contains details of the Will and Probate of Henry Phillips. He was a prominent businessman in Warrnambool in the 19th century. The document will be useful to researchers. This is a cream-coloured piece of parchment paper folded in two and containing the Will and Probate details of Henry Phillips, a Warrnambool hay and corn merchant who died in 1895. The document has handwritten material (black ink) on three sides of the paper. A seal of the Supreme Court of Victoria is attached with a green ribbon and there is one red stamp of the Master in Equity of the Supreme Court on the second page. The handwriting is fading in some places but is still legible. The 2/8th Armoured Regiment was raised in June 1941 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel W G Hopkins with officers and men selected from the wider AIF in Victoria. The regiment trained in newly arrived M3 General Grant tanks at Puckapunyal before moving north to Singleton, then the Wee Waa plains. The regiment sailed for New Guinea in April 1943 and carried out mobile defence to airfields at Port Moresby, Milne Bay, Dobadura and Popondetta. The regiment returned to Australia in February 1944 and disbanded as an armoured regiment and retrained as Nos 41, 42 and 43 Landing Craft Companies. They returned to the South West pacific serving at Bougainville, Balikpapan, Lae and Wewak. Vines Timber yard was established in 1897 after the timber yard established by Donald Douglas in 1887 was acquired by William James Vine in 1896. Vines Timber yard was managed by William and his son Albert Ernest (Ernie) until the 1950s when there were no vacant blocks of land in Surrey Hills and less requirement for building materials. William Vine is listed in the 1893 directory as living in Albany Crescent. He married Sarah Elizabeth Gunner in 1881. The business was badly affected by a large fire in 1920. Albert Vine (1903-1968) was a Camberwell councillor from 1926-1934. He was also Mayor of Camberwell in 1940/41 and a councillor from 1937-1944. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.466-40: George Walton settled at Rhyll after the Land Settlement Act was granted 8 acres in the township of Rhyll. He was the father of a large family, many descendants still live on Phillip Island. He had the honour of being the first brickmaker on the Island. He died in 1912 in his 81st year. Also Harriet Walton, Richard Walton & George James. 466-41: The Gall Family. Robert and Sarah Gall came to Phillip Island about 1869 and selected Block 10, some 20 acres. They built their home and sunk a well which still exists in Settlement Road, Cowes. This book was produced in a period of time when Australians, especially those in rural areas referred to Britain as "the mother" country. It was a time when the transition from a colonial dominion of Britain to the status of an individual State through the Australian Constitution was quite apparent, except for the affection and respect of the majority of the population towards "their" Queen. It was a time when the Governor General (Queen's representative) were British born and picked. Australia had grown from a colonial status to an individual state. The feeling towards the monarchy is aptly demonstrated by the words from the High Commissioner for Australia, Sir Thomas White K.B.E., proposal for Australia to adopt the royal title "Elizabeth the Second by the grace of God of the United Kingdom, Australia and her realms and territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, defender of the Faith" Here faith implies the christian (Church of England) religion. In rural Australia the respect and admiration for the Queen was very high and all public offices, clubs and halls displayed a well positioned, large photograph of the Queen. The respect for British royalty was quite pronounced by the royal toast, offered before "official" proceedings commenced, and in the military flying the royal "blessed" colours.This book was donated by one of the founding families residing in the Kiewa Valley and is typical of the general feeling of respect and admiration felt by the rural communities towards the British Royal Family, especially towards Queen Elizabeth II. The rural slant towards any form of patriotism was along the lines of "Queen and Country", in that order. After World War II the social texture through multi-culturalism (especially in the Cities)moved away from this "motherland" bondage but it had taken a longer period to penetrate those rural sectors within the Kiewa valley and high plains areas. The great post World War II immigration of European refugees started a shift of numbers of Australian families whose parents were not born in Australia or had British family ties. The book represents a period in time where ties to Britain where a lot strong and entrenched in the social fabric of the Australian rural sector. The growing push for a republic is becoming stronger and stronger as the level of rural royalists deminishes.This item is a hard covered book of 200 pages including 8 pages in full colour and over 250 photographs covering the British royal family and in particular Queen Elizabeth II and her coronation. The external protective paper dust-jacket is in colour. Specific references to Australia appear on pages 9,36 to 41 and 97. The hard cover has a "off" white cloth textured (glued reinforced) cover over thick cardboard . The front and back pages depict the Royal investiture carriage with guards and footmen. Little cherubs are portrayed around the sheath holding the Royal Crown. Henry Southby pre WW1 served 5 years in the Militia and 22 years on the Permanent staff. He is listed as No 2240 serving in the 4th Batt Aust Commonwealth Horse during the Boer War from March to September 1902. By the time he enlisted in the AIF he was 41 years 2 months of age on 22.3.16 with the rank of Lieut in the 39th Batt. The 2/8th Armoured Regiment was raised in June 1941 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel W G Hopkins with officers and men selected from the wider AIF in Victoria. The regiment trained in newly arrived M3 General Grant tanks at Puckapunyal before moving north to Singleton, then the Wee Waa plains. The regiment sailed for New Guinea in April 1943 and carried out mobile defence to airfields at Port Moresby, Milne Bay, Dobadura and Popondetta. The regiment returned to Australia in February 1944 and disbanded as an armoured regiment and retrained as Nos 41, 42 and 43 Landing Craft Companies. They returned to the South West pacific serving at Bougainville, Balikpapan, Lae and Wewak. Robert Clark was a self educated man who had arrived in Australia with his step father to take up mining in 1854. He worked in several local mines and being familiar with the hardships associated with mining life, helping to establish the eight hour day for miners. Robert married Sarah Jane Kernaghan in 1862 and together they had nine children. Robert Clark was first elected in 1872 and remained a councillor until his death in 1883. He died aged 41 years. This elaborate Letter of Appreciation was hand drawn and painted by artist and photographer Frederick de Kock who was associated with Mr N Caire's photographic Studio, View Place and by 1882 was producing and teaching hand painting on ceramics. In 1883 he advertised as a photographer with his own studio on the corner of Mitchell and King Street, which was later named the Bendigo Portrait Rooms. 180.1 Donated by Jenny Taylor; 180.2 Organisational created. Robin Boyd’s desk cupboard contained two exercise books (D482.1-D482.2) and assorted articles, essays and other material regarding Sydney Opera House (P1378.01-P1378.36, D179-D181, D479-D480), inserted inside the front cover of Walkabout Magazine July 1966 (P1377). Robin Boyd asked Mandie Eckersley (nee Boyd), his eldest daughter, to research the Sydney Opera House for him in the Mitchell Library, both before and after Utzon left. Robin was writing a book, but was very disillusioned with the way the entire saga unfolded. Mandie Boyd recalls: “It was a huge task because he wanted any mention at all in any publications to be noted. No one else had done it at that stage, not even the clippings service.” This second (and final) volume is filled with transcriptions on newspaper articles, editorials and letters to the editor covering the period 1962 to 1966 when Utzon quits. This jacket, along with the rest of the dress uniform, belonged to an individual named H.E Schulze. It is believed to have been dropped off to the RSL, so no additional information is known. This uniform serves as an example of the military dress worn by the Royal Australian Army (Royal Australian Artillery Regiment) during the late sixties.Khaki jacket featuring two buttoned chest pockets and a belt. A rope cord is draped across and under the right shoulder of the jacket (referred to as a lanyard).
